Bigots do bigoted shit for most of their adult lives, intentionally and otherwise. Does JK Rowling hate Jews? I have no idea. But I also have no reason to think she'd be opposed to stereotyping them based on hateful tropes. Once you hate one group of humans for something that doesn't effect you, the next step to doing so to another group is just an opportunity.
they ask a few questions and you respond but you can give the sorting hat your preference and “it takes it into account” so essentially you can choose it seems
do you not think there's anything to be redeemed in this world due to JKR's bigotry? what about the fact that one of the main characters is trans?
this is basically the argument conservatives make anytime someone chooses to go against norms when casting a role for the purposes of representation (like making the little mermaid black) so I'm not sure why it matters. even if the intention isn't pure, isn't it still representation?
Fuck JKR. Take all her shit by force and give it to the poor. Fuck them books. Shits aren't even good. Hth
dont take my word for it but you and I both know exactly what it was. do a simple Twitter search if you want to know how trans people feel about it (they hate it)
I am 100% down for calling any major company pieces of shit but how does one glean the intention of an action like this? Keeping in mind Rowling has zero input on this game, the questions about intention need to go to things like... Are there Trans people involved in the making of the game? Did they have input on this character? Is the company earnestly trying to show representation in spite of Rowling?
well that's why I asked. I just don't like dismissing representation as performative because that's always the first thing bigots do to try to make it illegitimate. for the record, I was just interested in glimmer expanding on her stance a bit. I'd much rather read that than random people on twitter.
I thought they were great AND I did not come out hating Jewish or Trans people after reading it I did become a glutton for capitalism as i spent 80 bucks to play hogwarts legacy 72 hours earlier though
It actually seemed to do much more harm in the community than help just reading people’s thoughts about it
I have not yet downloaded this game because I am a hero and ally and still only halfway through finishing the most recent Hitman trilogy and will likely forget about it by the time I'm done.
She may have just internalized racist messaging and didn’t realize it. She may have embraced that messaging and decided to advance it. It would be a bit odd to deliberately advance that messaging in stories that, at least superficially, give the idea that discriminating against people due to how they were born is wrong.
I think it’s just capitalism and the way the company can get the messaging out that “Rowling created this world but she didn’t create this game.” They know most people think her view on the topic is wrong and needed a way to signal they agree with the majority opinion.
Yea, I'll just stick my neck on the chopping block and say it. This seems like a massive overreaction and looking for a reason to be upset.
Yeah I'm shocked people are complaining about stuff on twitter This type of conversation is why I don't even bother with 90% of the threads on here and 99% of social media.
Evaluate the art not the artist because the artist will probably disappoint you (not specific to JK Rowling fwiw)
I don’t listen to R. Kelly or watch The Cosby Show. If the att is so intertwined with the artist then there’s no way to separate them.
This kind of "I'm brave and an asshole about it" attitude is exactly why you were sorted into Gryffindor. My ass is huffin' le puff.
It’s a business, they don’t really care about anything. But they definitely want to be seen as agreeing with the majority opinion.
Why is your seeming first response to just dismiss and say they’re overreacting about a topic and experience that you likely have little knowledge of? That tweet doesn’t come across as hysterical to me, just pointing out a trope that I wasn’t aware of personally. The tweet comments rightly point out other clumsy names used by JK such as Cho Chang for the sole Asian character and Shacklebolt for black person.
People have every right to be upset about all things HP and us old straight white guys from the internet can’t tell them that they’re wrong or overreacting. That’s not our place. To think that this company that is trying to make record profits truly cared about that marginalized group is naive though. It was absolutely performative to try to push the talk elsewhere
JK used a metric ton of alliteration when naming things Godric Gryffindor Salazar Slytherin Helga Hufflepuff Rowena Ravenclaw how is Cho Chang anything other than an alliterative name with a common chinese last name? Also, her heritage serves no real purpose to the story, nor does it impact her relationship with Harry. Her character may not have been very deep, but it still doesn't change that her being chinese had zero impact on what her character was. Could have named the character Elizabeth Ebbets and made her a generic white girl from London and the character doesn't change at all. Also find it ineresting you refrain from mentioning Shaklebolt's first name of Kingsley which would connote royalty. Nevermind that Kingsley gets one of the most bad ass storylines of the non-main characters and ends the whole damn series as the Minister of Magic.
Putting up a trans flag on your Twitter is performative. Actually including trans representation in your entertainment content is more than that. Call it cynical. Call it necessary. Say it’s undermined by giving Rowling a truckload of money while they do it. But “performative” doesn’t seem like appropriate labeling to me.
because being conservative is about creating a cozy ideology that never challenges your beliefs that you were socialized into
I think the other side is thinking of as hopeful. You want to hope it's progress in the face of the subject matter's creator...but given what we know about basically every major company in the country(world), the chance that it's just bad lip service is more likely.
If the game was set anyplace other than the Wizarding World of Harry Potter it would have been a progressive move. But you don’t get to ignore context.
Gamers will store 15 empty Mountain Dew cans and a some Cheetos bags on their console/pc then cry foul when the system overheats and demand a refund.
That is true...but it's also about the things I mentioned earlier, which are true for any company. Whose idea was the character? Who had input? Does the company/creative team employ Trans members?
Any other game people would say wow that’s nice but with this one it’s just a side eye and rightfully so since they clearly didn’t ask for any real input from trans people considering how upset the character has made them
How upset it has made some vocal trans men and women on twitter.* Twitter isn't real life. It's an echo chamber.
well for starters, they’re both surnames, like naming someone Smith Johnson Then add in that Cho is an ethnically Korean name and Chang is ethnically Chinese and of course the Asian is in Ravenclaw
I got Ravenclaw. Game is pretty good, but not as fun/addicting as other open world games I've played.
