I don’t know that she’s a shit human being, she has an issue that she’s uncomfortable with and she’s expressed that as far as I know she hasn’t been actively trying you make anyone act a certain way or be a certain way but I could be wrong
I thought about doing a reread and definitely gave it a pause after her comments. For all the messages in the books about inclusivity and respecting people/races/magic/nonmagic it boggles the mind that she has it out for trans people. Also you are worth like a fucking billion dollars and you spend your time basically promoting harassment of people that represent about 1% of the population who are also at a super high risk of suicide. I have to imagine there were a lot of trans people that saw hope in her books and then to have her come out and say what she has said is reprehensible
She has actively dragged her nuts across that issue. She’s horribly trans-phobic and it should be known. I think we can also enjoy the art without enjoying the artist.
If JK Rowling hates trans people then why did she have Hermione and Fleur undergo short-term gender reassignment with polyjuice potion during the Battle of Seven Potters, huh libsharts?
has anyone read Methods of Rationality? i'm very much not a fan fiction person but it's supposedly really enjoyable
I listened to it on audiobook while on runs. Probably the only ff that has a well-done audiobook. The premise is good and while it is pretentious and the author uses it as a vehicle for philosophical theses at times, it was worth my time.
I did a rewatch of all the movies last week from HBO Max. A lot better than I remember. POA & HBP are the worst two movies in my eyes. POA by far my favorite book and it just didn't do it good. Also HBP so much more needed to be in that movie than what was
As far as cinematography, those two were the tops. They had personality and style and made the wizarding world interesting and dark and magical. I think the first and last two are my least favorite of the movies. Too corny and (naturally) the poorest child acting for PS and then too muted (and of course mangling Voldemort’s death) for DH1/2.
Surprised to hear this take. IMO POA was the best all around movie when you take into account its merits as a movie and book to screen adaptation. I agree the latter could have been better, but the only two that are even close in this regard are SS and CoS but they were both just awful movies. After POA, the book to screen adaptations were just atrocious IMO, parts of the other movies were done well, i.e. Umbridge, but overall the story was lacking severely in the later films
It’s been said 1000 times but the books just need to be done in a 7 season series format, each season getting longer as needed to fill in the book details.
And yet every month someone posts something stupid on the Harry Potter subreddit like “does anyone else think HBO should make the books into a tv series or am I all alone?” No you dumb bitch, it’s the most asked for thing in the fandom, you aren’t a special little snowflake with an original idea.
Not sure how you can think POA is a worse movie then 4 or 5. 4 - 6 just had to take out so much to fit in a 2.5 hour film they were never going to sniff the quality of the books.
POA is pretty far and away the best of the films in my eyes. I also like 1 because I think it deserves credit for setting the tone and style of the world and it has original Dumbledore. 8 and 6 are pretty easily the worst 2. The rest are meh.
I thought 8 was great until Harry wakes up from meeting with Dumbledore. The final battle with Harry and Voldemort flying around is an atrocity, but everything before that they nailed.
Thats something that they added for cinematic purposes. It works in a novel for Voldy to be unaware of his mortality going into the final showdown but less so watching it on film, especially since the final showdown in the book is a big exposition dump and they couldn't have that on film either. I dunno. By that point they had made so many compromises and changes, big and small, the butterfly effect had fucked a lot of it up
I don't know that I really cared so much about that part considering that he knew Harry was destroying horcruxes since he knew they went for the vault at Gringott's and he anticipated Harry would make his next move towards Hogwarts to go after the horcrux that was there.
PoA is such a conundrum because it's far and away the best movie, but also probably the least loyal to the book, which will understandably piss loyal readers off. I saw the movie before reading the book, so I wasn't as affected as I was for the later movies. 1 is a nice, world building kids movie. 2 is basically a carbon copy from 1, but not as good. 3 is the best all around movie. I think I like 4 better than most, but it was a huge letdown after how good 3 was. 5 is my least favorite movie and probably my least favorite book. The tone is dull and lifeless (all of Yates HP movies had this problem) and basically lacked every instant of levity that was in the book. I hated 6 at first watch, but it's grown on me and is probably now my favorite Yates entry. 7 is a good set up movie that I generally like (Tale of 3 Brothers is excellently done), but 8 is a bit of a letdown with how they changed the final battle. I'm just sour on all the Yates entries in general. I feel like he got the least out of the actors and while he hits well on a lot of the darker scenes, he generally sucked at balancing it with the fun moments and dialogue that are in the books.
My 8 year old is reading all the books. Our deal is he has to read the book then he can watch the movie. He just finished POA. He started complaining that they were leaving out important information 5 minutes into the movie. He's going to be nightmare for the rest of these.
Yep, this was me from Goblet of Fire on. Saw the first 3 movies without reading, decided to give book 4 a try because I wanted to know what happened next and got hooked, which basically ruined my first viewing of the rest of the movies (except maybe 7) because I couldn't get past all the changes/things left out. We're reading book 1 with our 8 yr old right now and she's digging it so far. She's also incentivized to finish it because we've told her we'll take her to Harry Potter world when she does.
I have said this before in there but I will re-iterate as we are discussing the book -> Movie. My biggest issues with the movies, especially the Yates ones, was the changes he made for no apparent reason. I understand that book to movie adaptations will not be perfect and some liberties need to be taken. For instance, its impossible in a show to have extended periods of internal dialogue like a book has, so I understand some things have to added/changed. However, when you change fundamental facts in the movies its bothers me the most, or you make a change for no apparent reason. The Death Eaters flying is a perfect example of this. In the books it was such a shock and point of emphasis for the characters to talk about Voldemorts ability to fly, it was a major plot point. In the movies? Yates just has everyone flying around. This was not something that needed to happen. There are a ton of other little ones here and there that will always bother me that fall into this category, its been a while since I watched and read the story so I forget alot of them.
Wife and I told that to our 10 year old and that seemed to work. Now I’m probably more excited than she is to go.
Books favorite to least: Half-Blood Prince Deathly Hallows Prisoner of Azkaban Philosopher's Stone Goblet of Fire Chamber of Secrets Order of the Phoenix Movies favorite to least Prisoner of Azkaban Philosopher's Stone Deathly Hallows 1 Goblet of Fire Chamber of Secrets Deathly Hallows 2 Order of the Phoenix Half-Blood Prince The problem with movie 6 is it butchers the best parts of book 6, entirely cuts out some great parts of book 6, and needlessly adds in some pointless filler The problem with book 5 is it's overstuffed and meandering. Book movie and book 2 suffer from being too much like movie/book 1. Book/movie 3 took both series to a new level.
Mostly agree with your list bigpig although I'd swap your rankings for Philosphers Stone and Goblet of Fire for books and then your bottom 2 movies.
I'm not sure if it's been discussed, but it would be cool if Netflix bought the IP rights and made the books into a serial show. It would crush. If it happens, I hope I get credit for the idea.
Easily my favorite book as it delved into the backstory of Voldemort and how he became what he is. The flashback chapters had the biggest opportunity to be translated to the film and I thought those sort of fell flat for the most part. That was my biggest disappointment.
Same. HBP mesmerized me with those chapters. I think I burned through all 500 or so pages in like three sittings.
same. HBP was finished in 2 or 3 days. DH though was 1 sitting. Book got delivered at 10am and I finished it at around 3am.
Remember the scene where the death eaters are running through a corn field or some shit and then they blow up the Burrow for some reason? How did nobody ever look around and ask wtf they were doing?
