Spoiler I took it as more desperate to find the only person close to him before the outbreak. Although, it's been so long since I played TLOU I don't remember why he leaves the city in the game. They're going to take creative liberties and I think they should be trusted with them until they give us a reason not to.
Spoiler In the game he basically does it because Tess wants to, but it makes thematic sense. He’s so indifferent/cynical that he’s just going along with her ideas to keep him alive, but he has no purpose outside of it. It’s Ellie that finally gives him a reason to live again and why he attaches himself so fiercely to her. Tommy is family, but it’s fairly strongly implied that their ship has sailed in the aftermath of the unspoken events of the past.
The car scene felt directly out of a video game but without being cheesy. They managed to walk a fine line and pull it off. Awesome scene.
Not sure if it was intentional, but the ladder that Joel and Tess climbed up to get to the Fireflies hideout was tinted yellow - like they are in the game in order to highlight where the player is supposed to go next. And the use of Sarah’s line “Drugs. I sell hardcore drugs” was perfect.
Spoiler I was very interested to see if they had him pick up the AR after killing the Fedra soldier. Obviously you don’t get an AR until the last sequence of the game (as I remember). I am curious if they make the scavenging / resource system, which adds such a level of desperation to the game, an integral part of the show or just reference it in passing, like when Joel and Tess stopped and took off their backpacks to retrieve their guns type moments.
I can’t wait until next week when they find a combination to a safe in a diner and the safe is in the cleaners nearby
I mean, it’s not THAT far from the original game. By far my favorite nod to the game was the dust particles in a stream of light.
faithful to the game. First episode was extremely faithful to the game even some of the dialogue was straight from cutscenes. Obviously there are some changes but nothing so far that takes away from the essence of the story.
Pascal compares pretty favorably with Joel; his ethnicity isn’t clearly stated in game, but you wouldn’t have trouble believing he has Central American roots. Marlene was always a black woman, so that shouldn’t bother anybody. Only thing with Sarah being POC is you lose the Ellie looks comparison that’s implied for Joel, but they worked around that by giving us plenty of time with her pre-infection to see her plucky personality, which shows in Ellie more as the game progresses.
actor that plays tommy is also Latino. I guess it’s mostly Joel’s family with Sarah being the most obvious. I just read that the voice actor that plays Joel in the game will be a member of Dave’s settlement. I’ll spoiler that if anyone wants but it doesn’t give anything away. Will be weird to hear Joel’s voice coming from a different person.
After watching the first episode I wouldn’t be surprised to find out they let the actress read for Sarah then decided they needed to flip Joel’s ethnicity so she could play the role
I’m sure she’d do great and she has a bright future but she was perfect as Sarah. Bella Ramsey is also perfect as Ellie
Was never really worried about this show being good given the people involved and the HBO pedigree, but man. That was fantastic. So glad they didn't do the prologue from the game as flashbacks in the show. It's such an effective introduction to the world.
