borderline metal, but michael afkerfeldt from opeth loves them so that has to count for something. other than the intro, fuck Rock You Like a Hurricane, though

scorpions - only a man - Animal Magnetism

Scorpions - No One Like You

no one has touched the two most epic metal genres yet, POWER METAL and (female-fronted) SYMPHONIC METAL

    Kamelot - Edge Of Paradise

    Flames Of Revenge - Rhapsody

The Other Half (Of Me) (Black Symphony) - Within Temptation

    Operatika - Last Quest

winding guitar solos + medieval themes + female vocals = :jizz:

i call it Evanescence for grownups

Really though, if you haven't given Opeth a listen, do yourself a favor and check out Blackwater Park, Ghost Reveries, or the Watershed. All are pretty accessible as far as death metal goes. I'm certainly not dumb enough to say that they're the best, but I'd like to think that i listen to a lot of music, at least, and Opeth is easily in my top 5 overall, let alone metal bands.

They're technically great without being too showy and Mikael Akerfeldt has been as good as anyone in any genre over the last decade in terms of talent and originality. The dude is a monster on the mic but also has a pretty damn good clean voice as well. Their recent albums have been produced really well, making them even more accessible to people who don't like the low-budget sound of some death/black metal.

Saw them live in Houston for the 1st time in 2003, and came away impressed. A little more melodic than I'd have thought

they'd be but very good nonetheless. Suprising they don't have a bigger following here in the :americafuckyeah:

I saw them and Dream Theater last year in Seattle for Progressive Nation (p.s. never see a show at the Wamu Theater), and then saw them again this past May in Portland at a legit venue. They're getting more melodic and prog-ish as they go along, which I have no problem with. The death metal purists hate it, I'm sure, but those guys are usually douche bags anyway.

(I know your post wasn't directed solely at me, Joe) Personally, technical Metal usually isn't for me. There's a few exceptions (posted below), but over all, I respect Opeth's talent but their music doesn't hold my interest. I saw them in 2000 in Milwaukee and they did a great job reproducing their work live but over-all, beyond a few cuts from Orchid, Morningrise & My Arms, Your Hearse, they're just not for me. I usually like my Metal in the atonal, primitive, chromatic variety. As a progressive Metal band, theyre one of the better ones in my opinion though.

    Technical Metal bands that I do like;

Demilich-When the Sun Drank the Weight of Water

    Gorguts - Earthly Love

At The Gates - Ever - Opening Flower (Though I don't care for At The Gates post-With Fear....)

    Eucharist - A Velvet Creation

Mithras - Worlds Beyond The Veil - Worlds Beyond The Veil

it's heavy, instrument-driven (in most cases) music

also, in most cases (especially as you get more and more obscure/underground) the music isn't about instant gratification. there aren't cheap, catchy hooks or choruses. it feels less like it was churned out of some record company machine and more like it was composed as a piece of art. i'm sure most genres are this way as you delve deeper into them, but i like good electric guitar riffs and drums.

no one has touched the two most epic metal genres yet, POWER METAL and (female-fronted) SYMPHONIC METAL

I seriously like all kinds of metal. Except bullshit metal core floor puncher bullshit. Sometimes my friends make fun of me for rocking out to it but I love me some epic power metal.

    Edguy - Golden Dawn

    Gamma Ray - Dethrone Tyranny

And you got to post this one for the video alone. I seriously laugh out loud everytime I see it but it fucking rules.

(Oh shit I forgot this video is NSFW. Been a long time since I've actually watched it. Just a little bit of tittie action. Sorry guys. Not sure how to put the icon on someone else's thread.)

    So. NSFW

Rhapsody - Rain of a Thousand Flames

And for a female fronted band. You can't forget about Nightwish. I don't think they have the same same singer anymore but the one in this video :jizz:

    NIGHTWISH - Nemo

Thanks 6 Seconds and Dio is classic for sure. I'm glad you started this thread. I had been thinking about it with all the other music threads. Hopefully we can get more posters to contribute.

Ok gotta change it up with some death metal for now.

Just saw these guys play live last night in OKC. They're touring with Cannabis Corpse. Both bands were pretty badass. Ramming Speed is pretty straight forward thrash but they put on a great performance. I thought they stole show personally. Here is a live clip from one of their shows.

    For you power metal, symphonic metal fans, you guys may dig this act;

    Havayoth - Fallen

These guys only had one album, the singer is Andreas Hedlund. The other players are Marcus Norman and Morgan Hansson (both of Naglfar) You guys may be familiar with Hedlund's other projects; Vintersorg (Symphonic Viking Metal), Otyg (More Viking inspired Metal/Folk), and he took over vocal duties for Borknager.

    I usually don't prefer symphonic Black Metal but here are some good examples IMO;

Limbonic Art - Beyond The Candles Burning

Obtained Enslavement - Torned Winds From A Past Star

Emperor - The Loss And Curse Of Reverence

Emperor - The Loss And Curse Of Reverence

    Abigor - Weeping Midwintertears

    Trappist:

I really like the stuff you just posted. Just listened to a little of each song but sounds really cool to me. I'll be checking some of those bands out for sure. I've listened to a lot of Emperor but hadn't heard the others. I'll have to listen to some of the other stuff you've posted more closely. Some of the stuff sounds really obscure. A lot different than the stuff I usually listen to, but I'll need to take the time to really listen to it and let it soak in. We're getting some good variety in here though. That's for sure.

514, glad to see you in here. This thread cant have too much AILD in it. :beerchug:

I get all these sub-genres confused sometimes. Some good stuff in those last few posts
from TRRW and Trappist that I've never heard of. Def gonna check them out further.

I like this band right here too -

Bullet For My Valentine - 4 Words (To Choke Upon)

I know they're pretty mainstream but I think Arch Enemy fucking rules. Doesn't sound like nu-metal to me. Maybe it's just a chick that can growl like that that gets me. :jizz:

Yeah, the symphonic Black Metal stuff is more immediately accessible. You should really look into Summoning also. I posted one of their songs earlier in the thread and tried to post one yesterday but I'm on this shit computer at work and it runs so slowly on a thread like this that it's even hard just to copy and paste (which explains why I posted Emperor & Abigor twice and meant to post Satyricon "Mother North" and Summoning "Farewell" instead and why I posted Monarch first before fixing the link to Havayoth). I'm not big on Emperor post-Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk but their stuff prior to that is fantastic symphonic Metal. Obtained Enslavement really only have one good album, Witchcraft but it is hard to come by. I suggest looking it up because its on tier with the best symphonic Black Metal ever released.

There's definitely a digestion period with some of the more noisy, atonal stuff I posted. I think it is very rewarding music but it may just be not for you. Some people look for musicianship, virtuosity, and musicality in Metal and most of the first things I posted (aside from the old-school underappreciated post) lack most of that. The Wigrid, Xasthur, Velvet Cacoon stuff is more musical than the Aluk Todolo, Ildjarn, Dead Raven Choir stuff. I tend towards Metal that is either soundscape-fueled or punk-fueled (as its compositional basis).

IMO if you don't like epic power metal, you don't like metal. That encompasses it for me.

Cool. I've heard some of the stuff that you've posted but a lot is new to me. I will be going back through to fully digest this thread as it progresses but it will take time. Most of the time that I'm on here is while I'm at work too so I can't spend my whole day on the internet, though sometimes I'm tempted. I generally lean toward the musicianship aspect first and foremost but I will give anything a chance. I just haven't really had time to really listen yet. I am totally with you on the punk-fueled metal. I grew up playing/listening to punk rock and my preferences progressed more and more into metal as I grew up. Now I listen to all kinds of metal but mostly play grindcore, crust, thrash, with my ever growing fondness for speed metal and power metal slipping it's way into some of my new songs. I guess metal with a punk vibe.

These are some bands that were very influential to me.

Capitalist Casualties - Stupid ass punk

    Dystopia-Stress Builds Character

    CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE manufactured citizen

I have clearly seen the rift between black/death metal fans and power metal fans. Most of the time they can't stand each other or each others' music. I appreciate a lot of different genres but I do agree with you that epic power metal kicks ass. So here is some more (there is already quite a bit in this thread if you haven't gone through the whole thing)

Lost Horizon - Think Not Forever

Sonata arctica - Wolf and Raven

Sonata Arctica - The End Of This Chapter
