if you haven't checked out grossman and muenzner's new band, do it now. https://soundcloud.com/alkaloidband
I listened to the big 3 Darkthrone albums for the first time the other day. I lol'd at the production value of Transilvanian Hunger. I think in one of those black metal documentaries they said it was recorded on a headset microphone.
I think it's kind of cool from a minimalist/artistic point of view. Filosofem by Burzum is great, however black metal as a whole is not something I have much interest in going deep into.
i agree. if i'm listening to black metal something needs to be happening regardless of whether it's old school mayhem type shit or the newer inter arma type atmospheric shit.
Generally agree. However, At The Heart Of Winter is one of the greatest albums by any heavy band, regardless of genre.
the real question is: does their change to prog rock from prog metal change your opinion of them at all?
well i liked that song a lot. the old albums are still too much death metal for me. maybe i'll grow and listen to big boy metal some day.
i would say more metalcore than death metal, but eh, they never stick to one thing long enough to put a label other than "prog" on there. well, for colors and beyond. everything before colors was less prog, more metal. don't get me wrong, i love some of the songs on the early albums but those feature individual songs, not one piece of music from beginning to end. concept albums bro, concept albums.
when i say metalcore i'm referring to the gothenburg/melodeath sound, not the bastardized deathcore/mallcore sound. why? i don't know.
since the old thread is dead, the new Torche album is pretty sweet Spoiler here's the main single and here's another one i like (that part at about 0:56 )
I liked a few songs but overall I thought it was quite a bit weaker than the first. It was much more obviously female-fronted this time around, lyrically that is.
Those assholes in Be'lakor keep posting stuff on their Facebook about laying down guitar tracks and stuff. I feel like this has been going on for about 3 months. Also apparently Papa Emeritus III will be appointed this summer and there will be a new Ghost album
My favorite song by them. Love the first 2 minutes, too. That opening riff gives me chills. Throwing it on Spotify now, thanks for reminding me.
There's a random Pink Floyd part like 3/4 of the way through that was awesome I liked it, but it borders on having too much stuff going on.
It was fine. I will probably like it more with the additional context of the rest of the album. That part you're talking about reminds me of the guitar solo in that Mazzy Star song.
Been really enjoying this lately http://a-forest-of-stars.bandcamp.com/album/beware-the-sword-you-cannot-see
From that One Hit Wonder thread I learned that a lameass band like Barenaked Ladies has sold 15 million albums. Including DVDs, Opeth has sold 1.5 million. Different era (vis-a-vis album purchasing) and such, but that is sad.
Kataklysm is so fucking good. Mid-tempo, catchy death metal with low-range vocals is a win for me every time, and these guys are the best at it.
I'm really getting into BTBAM in preparation for the concert. Have gotten in deep with Parallax and Colors so far. I also dig the two new songs that have been released so far. Can't fucking wait to see it live.
What live albums do you guys like? I've been on a live record kick lately. Been rocking live albums from Kataklysm, Kreator, At The Gates, and In Flames (Tokyo Showdown, from when they didn't suck horribly).
