My top 5 so far this year would probably be — VEGARD ‘AEONS OF WINTER ECLIPSE’ HAIL CONJURER ‘HAIL & FIRE’ PRIMITIVE KNOT ‘FIGHT THE FUTURE’ YAUTJA ‘THE LURCH’ BIG|BRAVE ‘VITAL’ Also for anyone who into this sort of thing, PRIMITIVE KNOT did a decidedly fun covers album that he just released: And Heavy Mental you may dig IN GOWAN RING (if you aren’t already familiar) if you like stuff in the general feel of that PANOPTICON track you posted
hmm. I liked it much better than anything else they’ve released since they reunited. The songwriting was quite good
I liked this Vegard record, has a Summoning-esque vibe to it. I actually don’t even like Summoning all that much (kinda slow), but this was interesting nonetheless. In Gowan Ring was pretty good too, nice and folky.
Just discovered this band Heathen Deity, they are like an English version of Gorgoroth (Under the Sign of Hell-era). This track utterly rips, True English Black Metal lol.
Also, this band Ænigmatum is from around you guys (Portland, I think), Butthead burnttatertot. The singles from their upcoming album are good.
Summoning is probably top 5 for me for Metal bands. Their world building sound is second to none I think. But I tend towards slower music in general.
ah, sorry man - I definitely missed this when you posted it. great stuff, I pre-ordered the vinyl. How good is 20 Buck Spin? what a label
Summoning isn't a band I've ever been able to get into. Had the 3 or so albums they released in the 90's, couldn't make it through their 7-10 minute songs back then.
i think they only get better with each album. Particularly with “Stronghold” they hit their stride. At the 2:00 mark “Like moments clustered in a crowded year, today’s great sadness, or tomorrow’s fear; faint echoes fade within their drowsy halls like ghost; the daylight creeps across their walls.” (From Old Morning’s Dawn)
Maiden released a new single today, first new music in 6 years. Sort of bluesy for the first half then some classic Maiden solos at the end.
https://dreamstage.live/ Just a reminder that the live Mastodon show at the Georgia Aquarium is tonight at 9ET. $24.95 for online access. Hopefully we get Leviathan straight through considering the venue. I’ve seen them play Crack the Skye in full live the year of release and 10 year anniversary.
Most depressing riffs in Metal? Maybe this is just for us slow sad metal guys ~9 min mark ~10:15 mark Kinda just the whole song Opening
yeah, when I think sad, heavy music, I always think of Katatonia. admittedly the super slow melancholy stuff is not my forte…
theres definitely some redundancy in the ones I posted (first two songs specifically) that is lost if you just skip to the riff but yeah, I dig this
i was listening back through Katatonia stuff today. i feel like if they were american, they'd be a lot bigger. anyway, i like this song on its own, but i can see how Mikael Akerfeldt and Jonas Renske would be friends
Listened to the whole thing. Absolute rip off. But I loved it. Has the right pissed off vibe that I dig.
Why does every European metal band have to make awesome shirts that are then ruined by having something stupid on the back?
