They’re titans, meant no disrespect by my comment. more a reflection on the pace of their music (ultra slow)
Not sure if anyone follows the Goatowarex record label but they have a new batch of shit coming out tomorrow, usually sells out pretty quickly
The lines may be a bit more blurred today for all I know, and I don't know how old Shaolin is, but in the mid 90's Anathema "Serenades" was referred to as death/doom and stuff like Thergothon "Stream From The Heavens" and Skepticism "Stormcrowfleet" was full blown funeral doom. You listen to Serenades and Stormcrowfleet back to back and there's a pretty big difference between the two.
OK, this is going back in time (and showing my age) but I used to be an avid reader of a magazine called Metal Maniacs (Sorry youngsters but you really missed it). I was long term pen pals with one of their writers (Ula Gehret) and the Editor (Katherine Ludwig), which switched to emails and then eventually phone calls. As a matter of fact I spoke to Katherine at length the day before she died of Lymphoma. (One of the saddest phone calls I've ever had). Anyway the point is Ula reviewed the album "Serenades" and I can vividly remember the last line of that review saying "Serenades is a proper eulogy for Ula G." I've always considered THAT album (and the one that proceeded it) as well as those EARLY 90's My Dying Bride albums to be "funeral doom" but maybe more in theory that in practice. I've never practiced nor cared for genres gate-keeping (as it applies to ME), although I can understand the need for some to keep styles categorized, especially with the mountain of bands that have come and gone since. When I think of "funeral doom" I think of beautifully mournful yet heavy music and that applies to Serenades imo. Yes it is different than some, but when I posted previously I was speaking of my own interpretation of the "genre tag" and not the popular one. burnttatertot i certainly meant no disrespect towards you or anyone else itt. I both enjoy and admire the knowledge and taste you display in your posts and will defer to your judgment in future discussions about "Serenades" (should it ever come my way again).
Speaking of bands that were way different in the nineties, has anyone checked the new Katatonia album out yet?
Love Metal Maniacs, use to write to so many bands that were featured in their mag. I gotta have 100 of them sitting upstairs right now along with a shit ton of underground mags from the late 80's and 90's. I only genre-keep for a few bands, usually I wouldn't care, Anathema has been my all time favorite band since the early days so I couldn't let that one slide. Especially since I despise most funeral doom.
Didn't know they had a new one. Katatonia is one of those bands I couldn't understand the massive popularity of. "Dance Of December Souls" has 20+ reviews on MA with an overall average of 95%, I guarantee 95% of those reviewing it didn't listen to that album in the 90's. It's not a great album, it was never a great album. They've had some great releases since. None with a higher score however, which is amusing.
Didn’t even know that. Brave Murder Day is usually the early album I see hyped up. I’m more of a Last Fair Deal Gone Down/The Great Cold Distance kind of guy.
they have a few songs that I really enjoy (Dispossesion hits all the feels) but I don’t circle back to their catalog often. I’ve heard a few newer songs of theirs that, dare I say, sound almost nu-metal to me. Like, if they weren’t a Swedish former death metal band, it would be categorized differently. I think they are talented tho also, aren’t a few of them in Bloodbath?
Yeah Jonas Renkse plays bass and Anders Nystrom plays guitar in both bands. And I’d agree they’re not really that metal anymore. Like gothic alternative rock with some metal elements.
Also, to answer this question, I listened to it earlier today and while it’s just one listen, found it pretty average.
Next single out from the forthcoming Hellripper album thanks RegimentML for posting this band, fantastic stuff
it's amazing how hard it is for bands to just come out with a statement unilaterally denouncing fascist ideology. love it when bands do so.
i have 2 close friends that i go to one show with per year. we all live far from each other, so it's a 'fly somewhere random and hit some shows' kind of thing. we try to either hit (a) a festival, or (b) a city where two big tours are stopping on a friday / saturday (tough to find). this year, we're considering: LA for Mastodon / Gojira / Lorna Shore and then Enslaved / Insomnium / Black Anvil or Charlotte for Obituary / Immolation / Blood Incantation and then Raleigh for Enslaved / Insomnium / Black Anvil. there's also some decent overlap with the Obituary tour and the Kreator / Sepultura tour, but my sense is that the LA option will be the winner. i hate to miss that Obituary tour, but the logistics of one city are easier to manage, plus LA is fun.
On the Mastodon note, I have four tickets to the St. Augustine show that I bought before I realized that I was already booked for a trip. Hit me up if you want to buy them. I'll give the TMB discount cause I love all ya.
No one in Mastodon can sing really but their playing is the best I've ever seen live. I've seen them 3 times I think? Gojira, also great live
Immolation and Blood Incantation are also lots of fun live. I’ve seen Gojira and Mastodon as well. Never seen Obituary, not the biggest fan but still need to check their latest album out. Charlotte and Raleigh are cool but LA would win out for me. Lots more to do.
Appreciate the input fellas. I've seen all of them but Immolation and Blood Incantation before. Really wanted to check those boxes, but maybe can do it locally solo. I saw Mastodon and Obituary with my buddies once before (Psycho Las Vegas). I also saw Mastodon once before, on the Crack the Skye tour (my favorite era) - totally killer. Obituary was absolutely tremendous. That groovy caveman shit really lends itself to moving a crowd. I wasn't that big of a fan until that day. Saw Gojira right after Mars to Sirius came out (2008?). They opened for Behemoth's US tour. Only thing I remember is jumping for 3 minutes straight to 'Backbone', which was sick. Anyways, it's looking like LA is going to win out. I'm secretly most looking forward to seeing Lorna Shore (gasp!), I think.
Gojira was really tight live when i saw them in 2017 and being on a tour package that big will help LS play all their backing tracks without a hitch
I saw Gojira in 2021 with Knocked Loose and Alien Weaponry. Unfortunately it was the Fortitude tour but they did play some classic stuff
Kind of surprised Dark Funeral would headline over Cattle Decapitation. Either way I’d be there for the supporting acts
Not a direct fit for the thread but far better taste here than the punk thread. Homies band has a record out today. Getting some buzz here and there. Legit screamo. Drive Like Jehu, Portraits of Past, even current stuff like Touché Amore.
will be a bit until i’ve got a demo ready to share but i just got this logo done by a friend for my solo slam project
The first Ghost album is better than anything Amon Amarth ever did. Plus it won't just be a bunch of stinky dudes
Amon Amarth needs to do something to change up their sound for me to be interested. they seem to have made the same record over and over for the last 5-6x. I love the first couple, and some tracks from Twilight / Odin on Our Side, but after that it’s pretty forgettable.
