Before we conclude 2018, let's not forget these great movies released in 1993, that turned 25 this year:

    Highest-grossing films in 1993:
    1. Jurassic Park
    2. Mrs. Doubtfire
    3. The Fugitive
    4. Schindler's List
    5. The Firm
    6. Indecent Proposal
    7. Cliffhanger
    8. Sleepless in Seattle
    9. Philadelphia
    10. The Pelican Brief

    Also not to be forgotten:

In the slight chance you've never had the pleasure of seeing this film, here's a quick synopsis:

The film centers on Foster as he treks on foot across the city of Los Angeles, trying to reach the house of his estranged ex-wife in time for his daughter's birthday party. Along the way, a series of encounters, both trivial and provocative, cause him to react with increasing violence and make sardonic observations on life, poverty, the economy, and commercialism.

I think the re-booting of movies and continued, declining quality sequels are worse cash-grabs than the onslaught of comic book movies.

(2017 Ghostbusters, Planet of the Apes movies, Karate Kid, Indiana Jones: Kingdom of the Crystal Skull...)

Apes movies were actually pretty good.

The problem now is production companies are scared of original ideas because they don't know if they'll make money. However, they know Transformers 8 will pull in a shot ton regardless of quality, so that's what they make. Sequels and remakes.

No doubt. Just not many good original stories now, and if there is, they get lost in the shuffle of the sequels and comic book movies, which get all of the marketing dollars.

The industry is merely responding to changing technology and viewer tastes. With home viewing looking more like the theater experience with HDTV and good sound, people are more likely to stay home for dialogue films and more likely to go to the theater for larger (and perhaps more party/communal) experiences, like the superhero smashup stuff or Star Wars CGI wizardry. Plus you have companies like Amazon and Netflix (and HBO and Showtime and Starz etc.) making quality direct-to-TV material. There's still plenty of good original stuff out there, it's just not necessarily hitting the Big Screen like it used to when the theater experience was still unique and special.

Eh. I've heard this argument a lot. You can still pass stuff like that if you do it well. A lot of stuff has gotten more exploitative over the years but it has been done well. If everyone laughs or screams you are good if you make shit and only one "side of the aisle" enjoys it you are doomed.
