I’m glad we squared that up quickly cuz you and I could burn this thread to the ground. You should give circles a listen. It’s amazing
I plan to this weekend. I'm sure I'll like it. I'll check Em's out when it releases too. I'm an old head so that's probably more my lane but I don't dislike all of the younger guys. I can appreciate some of it and Mac was one that I could.
I didn’t much like his early stuff. Maybe because I wasn’t college aged at the time he dropped, I was pushing 30 at the time and my taste in hip hop had grown quite a lot. That being said, he didn’t rest on that party vibe and his music has constantly been experimental and funky and thoughtful. The fact he recorded the Devine Feminine at 23 is kinda crazy and Swimming and Circles at 25-26 is madness. His sound, ear for music was beyond his years. I feel like his relationship with guys like thundercat and Anderson Paak really created an inspiring musical atmosphere
Eminem getting a lot of backlash in the UK. https://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-51147007 and that Darkness song and video are super deep and powerful.
I will say that darkness, the song and video are an important thing to consume at least once. I appreciate that Marshal has used his profile in this instance
From a technical standpoint I think he’s pretty great. From a substance and musical standpoint, I think he’s pretty corny and I can’t relate to his shit. He’s got a few songs I really fuck with (his verses on renegades are particularly fantastic) but I can’t vibe with most of his music. I do feel he’s been unfairly painted into a corner by his fanbase due to his ability and it’s caused him not to be more experimental with his music. His fans always talk about how hard he can spit while ignoring the fact he hasn’t really deviated from the formula in 20 years. Kendrick, for example, has every bit the technical ability as em does but he’s allowed himself to focus more on growing as an artist. Kendrick can still obviously spit with the best of them, but, he’s put himself in a position musically where he isn’t constantly having to flex his muscles in order to appeal to fans
eminem sucks and his rap career has been full of rampant homophobia, rape jokes, piss and fart jokes, etc this album just sucks regardless of all those things
Just started watching season 4 of Hip Hop Evolution. Good stuff... East Side boys talking about the moment they finally made it. Haha.
Thanks for the reminder. Forgot it was out. I need to find the Organized Noize one somewhere. It's not on Netflix anymore.
Been stuck on circles since Friday and I’m just now getting around to this ROTD3 deluxe edition and it’s pretty damn great
The Lil Wayne/New Orleans episode of Hip Hop Evolution is good. It goes through how Bounce music came about then No Limits going another direction then Cash Money bringing Bounce music back so to speak
thought the same. Mannie Fresh's impact on that sound, which also ended up making its way to Atlanta isn't talked about enough
I can't stop listening to Circles. Also, half of the Jackboys album is flames, and the rest is still great
