Coming off season ending surgery, I wouldn’t be surprised if he signed a one year prove it deal with us
I still can't believe we traded Contreras for Murphy. We need to fire a bunch of our scouting guys for that one. Bill has posted back to back WARS better than Murphy's career high.
My opponent for Cobb County comptroller is openly posting that he wants to groom young Filipino men as part of something perverse called “snit’s replacement.”
The only downside to Baldwin being in Atlanta is if they feel like he needs catching reps. However, if they feel good about where he is, I like the idea of him being in Atlanta and catching 30% of game and being behind Murph's shoulder as a bit of a threat. We haven't done it much, but a lot of successful organizations have raised young catchers this way over the years with solid returns. And as noted, it's another $8M in your pocket to allocate elsewhere.
I feel confident that Murphy won't be the albatross he was last year. The injury thing clearly messed with him and he never got straight again. He's never had a season even remotely close to that bad offensively or defensively in his career, even ones where he didn't hit for average he still had an OPS of 700+ (his OPS was 636 last year). Whether he's a 250/850 ops guy or a 230/725 ops guy is kind of the question, along with the WTF defense shift last year.
There is zero percent chance we declined the option on TDA just to save $8MM and rely on Murphy and Baldwin
Alternating catchers every other day was stupid. If you ride with Baldwin and he catches for one guy in the rotation, Murphy is able to get in some rhythm at the plate which is a plus imo.
I'd imagine the hope is to sign a different deal, but I don't think we'd be opposed to opening the season with Murphy/Tromp/Baldwin. They love Baldwin and he's not far off at all.
Yep, it is not a winning formula switching every game. I am not sure if Murphy ever figures it out but we have to go into next season and at least attempt that.
Which part - Baldwin being in Atlanta or not having TDA? I'd probably prefer Baldwin in AAA playing everyday, but I also think $8M for Travis at this point in his career as a backup is probably not a wise allocation of $$$. If you can get TDA back, as the backup, for $3.5M or something that seems like a win win. Allocating $23M to your catchers is not a winning strategy, especially with those 2. It's also amongst if not the most any team in baseball currently has sunk in that position.
Per spotrac last year our full 40 man payroll was $236,433,901. We're currently sitting at 197,480,000 with 35 guys. If you assumed we raise payroll by 5%, that leaves us $50,775,596. Areas to address - LF - 5th OF/utility IF - SS - SP - possibly backup C The Athletic had the following estimates for guys based on fWAR and cost and comps Max Fried (SP) - 5 years, $140M ($28M AAV) Blake Snell (SP) - 4 years, $110M ($27.5M) Jack Flaherty (SP) - 4 years, $92M ($23M) Sean Manaea (SP) - 4 years, $76M ($19M) Nathan Eovaldi (SP) - 2 years, $45M ($22.5M) Luis Severino (SP) - 3 years, $50M ($16.7M) Shane Bieber (SP) - 2 years, $30M ($15M) Jose Quintana (SP) - 1 year, $9M Willy Adames (SS) - 6 years, $150M ($25M) Ha-seong Kim (SS) - 2 years, $36M ($18M) Teaoscar Hernandez (OF) - 3 years, $69M ($23M) Anthony Santander (OF) - 5 years, $105M ($21M) Jurickson Profar (OF) - 3 years, $48M ($16M) Joc Pederson (OF) - 1 year, $16M Michael Conforto (OF) - 1 year, $10M Alex Verdugo (OF) - 1 year, $8M
I did deadlifts tonight with a torn meniscus. Someone needs to toughen up! (And I’m talking specifically about Louis Holth )
We should really learn to be more forgiving. His carpal tunnel from putting together puzzles has adversely affected his posting
Would be very open to signing Eovaldi for a 2 year, $40M deal similar to Charlie a few years ago. Has had a sub-4 ERA for 5 straight years and has started at least 20 games in all 5 seasons. Hasn't shown any signs of wearing down (WHIP of 1.14 & 1.11 the last 2 years, BAA under .230 both years, 8+ K/9 consistently). Sale Strider Lopez Eovaldi Schwelly Waldrop, AJSS both get more seasoning in AAA. Ian as a 6th man. Somebody trades us for Elder because AA is a wizard. Sign me up
Supposedly a pretty team friendly market for shortstops. Dodgers just said mookie is going back to the infield. They have a bunch of guys and shouldn't be looking.
