I know it’d be a let down, but we’re really playing with house money at this point. I’d prefer to not make the WC if we don’t win the division. All it would do is lose us a one game playoff and keep snit on as our manager. If we miss the playoffs althogether then we can bring in a real manager with a nice nucleus.
Well, that's the other thing. They were so good (best record in the NL) for three damned months, which made us all believe, even though we would all agree this season is house money. The Braves' window to compete hasn't even opened yet, IMO. And yet, every single one of us would call this season a failure if they miss the playoffs. Sports, man.
I'm not sure missing the playoffs will be enough to get rid of Snit. This team had pretty low expectations coming into the year.
If we miss the playoffs after the start we had to the season and AA doesn’t have the balls(or support) to fire Snit then he can kindly fuck off
I have zero confidence in AA. His roster management has been horrifying. Not real pleased with the Carter Stewart shit either... I just really miss Coppy.
things stink right now but we’re only a game back of a philly team that is similarly playing over their head and still have the 4th best record in the league it’s not that grim yet
Yea after the fanfare that came with the hire, it’s been a let down so far. Granted, it’s very early in his tenure, but it’s all we have to grade him on so far.
It’s definitely not. We could snap out of it. Ender and flow from last season could return. Newk from a month ago could re-emerge and we could get a bullpen arm and bench bat. But I think we need to Prepare ourself for the possibility that those things don’t happen. To me the biggest thing we’re playing for this year is thread banning ale.
AA has made one great trade (BDC, and getting rid of Kemp and his albatross contract no matter how good he has been this year). Also brought up soroka at the right time, just bad luck with his Injury. And held back Acuna for the extra year dispite all the criticism that came with it Other than that in 8-9 months..... ummmm.... ehhh... hasn't traded any of our mammoth prospects? I guess that's a big plus
It doesn't, of course, but pitcher doesn't really matter if your defense is going to boot the ball around like a little-league team.
Listen, when I want to throw a tantrum over snit, you need to throw a tantrum with me, or step aside and let me have my fill.
It’s hard to say the Carter thing is his fault, but his track record indicates it is. It’s pretty big to lose the year of development for a first round pick, even though we get it back next year.
luckily snit is the only retarded head coach in my life and it’s all smooth sailing with larry fedora in the fall
We have won 4 of our last 12 series since the beginning of June. We have series wins over Nats, Mets, Padres and @Cards We have series split with @Blue Jays We have series losses @Padres, @Dodgers, Orioles, Reds, @Yankees, @Brewers And at best a split or another series loss to Blue Jays tomorrow. We have not played good baseball in a while. You can blame the bullpen, Snit, offense, starting pitching whoever you want because pretty much across the board they've all sucked for a while.
I'm not sure what people expected. AA has a clear track record of making big moves either in the offseason or right before/at the deadline. He rarely dives in before then. Acquired: Brett Wallace (Dec. 16th) Brandon Morrow (Dec. 23rd) Jojo Reyes and Yunel (July 14th) Anthony Gose (July 29th) Brett Lawrie (Dec 6th) Mike Napoli (Jan. 21st) Edwin Jackson (July 27th) Colby Rasmus (July 27th) Kelly Johnson (August 23rd) Sergio Santos (Dec 6th) J.A. Happ (July 20th) Reyes/Josh Johnson/Buehrle (Nov. 19th) RA Dickey (Dec. 17th) Marco Estrada (Nov. 1st) Josh Donaldson (Nov. 28th) We can nitpick the bench guys or the yo-yo'ing of the bullpen guys, but the manager has a decent amount of say in that kind of stuff as well. It's not purely AA's call. Most if not all managers have input on the 25-man. Other than that, if people expected AA to make massive moves and trades way before the deadline, not really how he's ever played it. He's been solid so far here. Anibal and Carle have been good finds (combined 1.5 fWAR). Michael Reed was a useful minor league signing. Had a real good draft, even with the Carter snafu.
Hard to give him credit for Reed when the guy is killing it and he won't give him a chance. Talking chop says he's killing moral in the minors with his shit.
With Nick and Ender playing every day and Ronnie back, there aren't exactly a ton of AB's. Reed may disagree, but I'm sure AA would say that him playing every day at AAA is probably better for his development than getting 3-4 AB's a week as a pinch-hitter. Reed's also now on the 40-man and getting paid more in the minors because AA put him on it.
SC you’re definitely an AA fan. What are some things you disagree that he’s done this season? There’s no way you’re okay with all of the continued roster construction and the leash certain members of the bullpen have received without real merit.
I’m praying we see Acuña in center tomorrow and Ender on the bench. I’ll also personally offer AA a bj if he’s able to somehow move Ender’s contract in the future.
That's one way of looking at it. But he's 25, not sure he's a guy that's going to develop a ton. And we called him up just so he couldn't opt out. I'm not sure if he appreciates it or not, it's kind of shitty of us.
He hasn't been perfect, but I don't think he's been noticeably bad either. I like the approach of taking time before making your trade move, especially if you're payroll limited and probably only have one bullet in the chamber to fix your problems. Things I disagree with/would change? DFA Moylan, Flaherty and Santana, assuming the cost to find a suitable replacement/slight upgrade is realistic. The lack of a coherent plan for Gohara has confused me. I didn't like DFA'ing Luke Jackson (the stuff is good and he's an ideal long-reliever/mop-up guy) but they got him back luckily. Everything else is more a Snit thing. Ender shouldn't be hitting leadoff, Flowers shouldn't be playing against RHP's, Jesse Biddle should get the high-leverage innings Sam Freeman gets.
I assume we talked to him/his agent beforehand about calling him up before the opt-out. There's usually a head's-up/notification there. Obviously, if they didn't, then yeah, that's problematic for sure.
I’m glad we haven’t made a move. Idk that there’s been one that would have prevented what we’ve seen the past two weeks. It’s giving us a clearer picture of what we have. I think the roster moves you’ve touched on have been spot on. Those things seem like such common sense and they’ve repeatedly costed us games, and somehow continue to do so.
Agreed. It's a frustrating deal with the roster stuff. Veteran players prefer having other veteran players in roles in a playoff race, and they've got a manger that favors veteran players and experience (ie taking Biddle out in a key spot to pitch Moylan against STL). You can try to tell Snit that he should play Michael Reed or Evan Phillips or whomever, but he's going to roll with Santana or Moylan or Freeman instead every time. Much like the roster had to be Fredi-proofed back in the day, AA's going to have to Snit-proof it at some point and deal with an unpleased manager.
seems like weird timing to complain about jt against the al east the day after he was really damn good against them but idk
ATLANTA -- Luiz Gohara has the capability to fortify the Braves' bullpen because he can consistently provide multiple-inning appearances in high-leverage situations. But it looks like the talented young southpaw may best fit within Atlanta's rotation coming out of the All-Star break. When Gohara returned from Triple-A Gwinnett last week, he said he was willing to be utilized as either a reliever or a starting pitcher. But the 21-year-old said he'd like continuity in one of the two roles and would prefer to be used as a starter. Gohara may soon get his wish as the Braves look beyond the upcoming All-Star break with the expectation Brandon McCarthy (right knee tendinitis) and Max Fried (blister) will still be on the disabled list. Highly regarded prospect Kolby Allard hasn't shown recent signs he's ready for a promotion, and Touki Toussaint will likely spend at least a month at the Triple-A level before being considered a candidate to be a starter or reliever at the Major League level. As the Braves approach next week's All-Star break, Mike Foltynewicz, Sean Newcomb, Julio Teheranand Anibal Sanchez stand as their only four healthy starters. This creates the likelihood Gohara will soon fill that fifth spot. The Braves decided Foltynewicz will start Wednesday night's game against the Blue Jays. There was some thought this assignment would be given to Gohara, who has made a pair of two-inning relief appearances since being recalled from Gwinnett on Wednesday. But manager Brian Snitker opted to stick with Foltynewicz, who appreciated the decision to allow him to make this start on regular rest. Had the Braves opted to push him back to Friday, the recently selected first-time All-Star would have ended up making both that start and his first after the break with at least six days' of rest. "I want to stay in a groove and then get this one over and get ready for [the All-Star Game]," Foltynewicz said. Sanchez and Newcomb are lined up to start the first two games of this weekend's home series against the D-backs. Teheran will likely start Sunday on regular rest. But based on how the next few games go, Gohara could also be considered a candidate for that series finale. Gohara might be more likely to start one of the first five games the Braves play coming out of the All-Star break. Exactly when he might start may be influenced by if Foltynewicz pitches during Tuesday night's All-Star Game.
“Let’s ignore the larger more accurate sample for a smaller, less reliable sample.” - You, being a fucking idiot.
"let's degrade a great start from julio by using a 9 game sample over 6 years" -you, being an ale-tier miserable fuck who would rather julio look bad so you can complain about him than him pitch well
Again, let's use his more relevant two year sample which shows that he sucks. If this was about people bitching, then you wouldn't be on one about Ender right now because you would rather him just hit well. 2017-2018 JT: 4.41 ERA, 5.04 FIP, 4.86 xFIP, 7.60 K/9, 1.53 HR/9, 1.1 WAR 2017 League Average: 4.49 ERA, 4.48 FIP, 4.41 xFIP, 7.96 K/9, 1.34 HR/9 2018 League Average: 4.20 ERA, 4.22 FIP, 4.14 xFIP, 8.25 K/9, 1.22 HR/9 This is because you have some hyper-sensitivity to taking a massive L for saying Julio shouldn't have been traded at the 2015 deadline. Since then he's been almost average to below average while commanding 12% of the salary expenditure on our 25 man roster. Stop being an idiot. He's trash and he's not worth what we're paying him and will pay him. We should have more prospects instead of him.
I tried to say this last week (granted I included Sanchez in that convo) but we know what we have in JT. Let's let the kids play and plan for the future. We have too many prospects not to get a solid 5 (plus a few others) and still have a few leftover to stock the pen. Let JT McCarthy etc be some long relief in the pen for when we limit Innings and pitch counts.
We are 16-17 since June 1st with 6 blown saves. 22-11 sure would look and sound better. The Nats would probably have been sellers or a laughingstock for still being buyers.
Rick C: On a scale of 1-10, how big of a blunder was it for the Braves to fail to come to an agreement with Stewart? 12:14 Kiley McDaniel: Maybe a 3 or 4? We had 5 players ranked ahead of Stewart that were on the board for that pick. He’s a prep righty that was trending down leading up to draft day, an especially risky class of player. The 2019 class is college bat heavy and would appear to have enough 50 FV types to give the Braves a chance to get a comparable talent at 9 that’s a hitter and closer to the big leagues than Stewart would be, thus eliminating the only real negative: putting off having an elite prospect by a year. 12:14 Kiley McDaniel: Also fans, generally speaking, freak out way too much when a player doesn’t sign.
Larry: A lot of Braves fans saying that not signing Stewart isn’t a huge deal because of the compensation pick. Is that true though? The GCL/DSL levels of that system are extremely bare right now. 12:15 Kiley McDaniel: But what if you pick a guy that never plays at those levels? Also, missing one prospect from rookie ball doesn’t matter. There aren’t championships for most loaded rookie ball team.
Larry: Followed the Braves minors for a long time, and I don’t remember things being as empty at Danville/GCL level as they are right now. I realize the high minors look great and that’s what matters, but should I be nervous about the lower levels? 12:21 Kiley McDaniel: Team in the race with a strong core, Markakis finding the fountain of youth, a top 5 system aaaaaand….fans will find something to be negative about Rod: Did the Braves offer over the 40% threshold to make sure they get the 9th pick next year? Would be dumb of them not to, but haven’t seen confirmation just speculation 12:30 Kiley McDaniel: That rule only exists if the player submits to the pre-draft MRI program and Stewart obviously did not. No offer has to be made to get a comp pick in that situation.
