Espn ranking best pitching performances for each team. Fuckin 26 IP Atlanta Braves: Joe Oeschger (May 1, 1920, versus Robins) Pitching line: 26 IP, 9 H, 1 R, 4 BB, 7 SO (Game Score: 153) OK, baseball was a much different game in 1920, when it was still routine for starting pitchers to remain in the game regardless of inning. Still, this game was beyond extreme, even for 1920: Oeschger and Leon Cadore both went the distance in a 1-1 tie, with Oeschger recording the highest Game Score in history (Cadore's 140 is second-highest). With a conservative estimate of three pitches per batter, we're talking nearly 300 pitches for each guy, and probably more. Oeschger (pronounced "Eshker") himself estimated he threw 250 fastballs that day and Cadore "at least 300 curves." The New York Times report didn't mention the two hurlers until the ninth paragraph, more impressed that the game simply went a record 26 innings. For argument's sake: If you prefer a nine-inning effort, Warren Spahn's 15-strikeout, two-walk no-hitter in 1960 registers as one of those rare 100 games. Spahn had just 18 double-digit strikeout games in his career, and this one did come against a bad Phillies team in September. Most likely to beat it: Mike Soroka doesn't have the high-octane fastball that usually goes with the highest Game Scores, but if he can improve his strikeout rate to go with his ability to induce soft contact, he could put up some big efforts. Noteworthy: We've mentioned the Boston Braves and Milwaukee Braves, but the top game in AtlantaBraves history actually belongs to Kevin Millwood, with a 98 when he spun a one-hitter with 13 strikeouts in 1998. Greg Maddux's best Game Score was 96, John Smoltz's was 93 and Tom Glavine's a mere 90. Phil Niekro's best was 91, which he did three times.
Tom Glavine's 1 hitter against Cleveland to win the World Series is a noteworthy pitching perfomance.
i relish in denigrating old athletes in all sports so 2 and 3 don't move the needle for me since hank and eddie matthews wouldnt be able to make it out of double A ball in modern times send tweet
I mean Ron Dale Chipper Galaragas Javey That's pushing and probably blowing past 200hrs from your top 5
Best/Peak singular Braves season for teams 1 and 3 (clearly the best two options). Team 1: Ronnie: 126 wRC+, 5.6 fWAR, 41 bombs. Murph: 151 wRC+, 7.0 fWAR, 36 bombs. Chipper: 165 wRC+, 7.3 fWAR, 45 bombs Big Cat: 156 wRC+, 5.0 fWAR, 44 bombs. Javy: 170 wRC+, 6.8 fWAR, 43 bombs. Carty: 173 wRC+, 6.7 fWAR, 25 bombs. Furcal: 105 wRC+, 4.5 fWAR, 12 bombs. Martín: 117 wRC+, 4.5 fWAR, 10 bombs. Smoltzy: 24-8, 2.94 ERA, 253.2 IP, 276/55 K/BB, 8.4 fWAR. Team 3: Ozzie: 117 wRC+, 4.6 fWAR, 24 bombs. Mathews: 167 wRC+, 8.7 fWAR, 47 bombs. Blauser: 128 wRC+, 5.4 fWAR, 15 bombs. Maddux: 19-2, 1.63 ERA, 209.2 IP, 181/23 K/BB, 7.9 fWAR
Doing a little research now and Niekro going 21-20 at age 40 is even more insane. He had decisions in all but three of his 44 starts and 23 complete games! I'd imagine his record would've been 11-13 had Snit been his manager.
Currently up in my nostalgias about how good of a fastball hitter Sheff was. But despite SC's objective data, I'm taking Team 1. Hell, give me a team with Smoltzy members and Chipper batting 3rd
I don’t want to put a damper on the mood but the Kenny Lofton trade doesn’t get talked about enough for being dumb as hell
This outfield alone almost made me go with 3, but felt like overall 1 was a stronger lineup. Could argue batting order could use some tweaking but regardless no holes 1 through 8
Yep, that's part of why it was so stupid. DJ returned to form with the Indians, Andruw blossomed into a snubbed Hall of Famer, and Dye had a great career.
you know what’s insane? having 3 hof pitchers, a hof 3rd baseman and the best defensive CF of all time in their absolute primes and only winning one world series
Honestly, it’s probably because of that Kenny Lofton trade. Look at how many WS Justice went to after we traded him. Dye too.
oh yeah our manager was a hall of famer too and we had elite guys like big cat and sheffield and jd drew and even brian giles again NOT BITTER
in a decade, with snit we’ll say “we had a hof first baseman, second baseman, the best OF of all time and luke the duke jackson and never even made the WS”
