Isn't that the big change that Ronnie made last year that got him to catch fire?

    Watch out for Oz

I'm excited about the changes Ozzie and Dansby have made. Really pulling for them to have a big year. That would go a long way towards helping this offense out.

Never really lost my mind but stating basic concern for 5-8 in our order was Def valid.

It's good to see Ozzie make a correction, I'm glad I posted it for Jeremy.

Kind of similar year. I remember the talk about Ronnie was more about his hand placement but the bat is more vertical as well

It’s kinda wild that at 36 Glavine went 18-11 with a 2.96 in 224 innings. Then we let him walk so that we could get some sweet Horacio Ramirez and Shane Reynolds action.

    Here ya go.
As the Braves prepare to open the season this week, the man who won the MVP award in their only World Series title sees what you see: a young and talented team that did well last season but probably needs a little help, a franchise that has been completely rebuilt but is owned by a distant corporation with zero emotional connection to its baseball product.

Tom Glavine, the Braves Hall of Fame pitcher, looks down from a corner of the press box at SunTrust Park and reaffirms his dream: ownership.

“I really want to do it,” he said. “I would love for it to be here.”

Few scenarios would be better for the Braves than this one: 1) Liberty Media, faceless owner, sells the team; 2) Tom Glavine, homegrown franchise icon, buys it.

There is no indication right now that Liberty Media is putting the team, stadium and surrounding development on the market any time soon. The Colorado-based company is having too much fun collecting early rents from The Battery and revenue from SunTrust and pleasing stockholders. But there is going to be an economic leveling off process at some point.

This is just a business to Liberty Media, and business is good. The Braves’ revenue in two seasons after bolting downtown Atlanta has jumped from $262 million to $386 million to $442 million. But the Braves’ payroll ranks about 20th in the majors at $112 million, below last year’s Opening Day payroll of $118 million. General manager Alex Anthopoulos maintains the team will wind up near the middle of the pack after in-season moves.

Anthopoulos signed third baseman Josh Donaldson to a one-year, $23 million contract but otherwise spent little this offseason. Notable was the decision to not acquire starting pitching help or bring back former Braves closer Craig Kimbrel. Economics seemingly have played a part in this, particularly when it comes to giving out long-term deals.

This irritates a large segment of the fan base. It doesn’t thrill Glavine, either. He’s not only a former Braves star, but he also lives in Atlanta, remains a fan and will work as a commentator on about 60 telecasts for Fox Sports South. He also has a better understanding than most former players about the business side of baseball. He was the Braves’ player representative and the head of the players’ union during a tumultuous period for the sport.

As a pitcher, he was known for painting the corners. But when it came to discussing corporate ownership and Liberty Media, he threw heat down the middle.

“My only complaint is, the perception is that this team with them is such a secondary business with what they do that it’s all a spreadsheet and the bottom line,” Glavine said. “I can’t say the player side of me or the fan side of me loves that. You want to know that, hey, if your team has a chance to do something, you’re gonna go for it. No knock on Alex or anybody here. But the lack of what they’ve done this winter speaks to that (mindset): ‘We can’t afford to have that contract.’ ”

As opposed to just being focused on paying down construction loans and leasing storefronts and office space?

“Right. Look, the Braves are always going to be an organization that has to build from within, and I love that,” Glavine said. “We know who all of these guys are because we’ve seen them in the minor leagues so the excitement of seeing them get here is great. It just would be nice if there was a little more of a splash from time to time when somebody’s out there, where the attitude is, ‘We’re going to get that guy.’

“What they did last year certainly excited their fan base. Now you throw a little icing on the cake, and you go out and get a guy. I’m not saying Josh Donaldson won’t be that guy because if he’s healthy, I think he’ll have a huge impact. But most people would look at the team and think, ‘We kind of need an ace. We need a No. 1.’ There’s not many of those guys out there. But a splash like that would’ve been a big deal.”

Would he have invested more heavily if he was the Braves’ owner?

“Again, I would’ve loved to,” he said. “If you had an ownership group with deeper pockets and they could afford to make a splash and overpay on the back end, why not? … You can’t afford to have bad contract on top of bad contract. But you want to win.”

The concern about the Braves’ starting rotation has grown with early injuries. Mike Foltynewicz (elbow) and Kevin Gausman (shoulder) won’t be ready for the start of the season. Julio Teheran, who was dropped from the playoff rotation last season and was not expected back this year, will start the opener in Philadelphia. He will be followed by two rookies, Bryse Wilson and Kyle Wright. Contrast them with the Phillies’ three starters for the opening series: Aaron Nola, Nick Pivetta and Jake Arrieta.

Glavine was part of a group that bid to purchase the Miami Marlins in 2017, but the team was sold to investors who included Derek Jeter for $1.2 billion. Glavine would have had a minority share (single digits, percentage-wise), and his stake in a future purchase bid would be about the same.

“To me, it’s more about being part of running it and seeing it come to fruition and trying to build it,” he said.

And to be a face for ownership.

“Nobody would know anybody from Liberty Media if they walked in here,” he said.

Not every private owner is good. Not every corporate owner is bad. But there’s the tangible difference to a fan base and community. There’s a connection, and that leads to a far greater likelihood that ownership is emotionally invested, to say nothing of financially.

Glavine saw the difference, having played for both Ted Turner and Time Warner in Atlanta. He said Turner “had a face, and he was around. That’s a little bit understated sometimes.”

    And corporate ownership?

“I don’t love it,” he said. “I would prefer not (having it). Even at the tail end of my career, I saw the differences, Ted Turner and Time Warner. When that whole thing first happened, even if you couldn’t see it from the outside, the differences for us were immediate. Everything in that clubhouse all of a sudden had to go through a chain of command, whether it was trying to get a player or spending more money or getting a roll of tape in the training room. Everything.”

    A roll of tape?

“Maybe a slight exaggeration,” he said. “But I used to hear the trainers say some things. When they needed stuff with Ted, it was, ‘OK, we’ll get it, and we’ll tell Ted what we did.’ Then it became, ‘Oh we need something? Well, we have to send it off to corporate, and we have to get it OK’d.’ With Ted, it was always, ‘Do what you need to do, and we’ll figure it out later.’ With corporate, it had to go through the chain of command and meet the bottom line and all that.”

Glavine was president of the players’ association when the union went on strike in 1994, forcing the cancelation of the World Series. He became somewhat of a face for the strike, leading many Braves fans to boo him when the players returned. Never mind that he was representing a union in collective bargaining talks.

But in that ensuing season, the Braves went to the World Series against Cleveland. Glavine won Games 2 and 6 and won the MVP. He threw eight innings of one-hit ball in the clincher.

Atlanta was largely a homegrown team in the 1990s but invested big in free agency when warranted (see: Greg Maddux). Glavine would like the franchise to return to that mindset.

He hasn’t checked on Liberty Media’s ownership plans recently but said, “At some point, I’ll probably have somebody kick the tires on it to see where they’re at. We have a group that represents us. You hear stuff all the time. We’ve heard it for years with the Braves. At some point, Liberty is going to sell.”

It's really fucking embarrassing MLB let a corporation buy the Braves.

The Braves are somehow going to get sold and get fucked out of not "owning" the battery and also having to pay rent to play in SunTrust and we'll continue to be poor while Liberty racks in rental income

    Fucking cunts
