Not sure what newk’s trade value was this past season, but I feel like we will regret hanging onto him. His control will never even be slightly below average.
I hope they start Thomas Burrows and Corbin Clouse at AAA and give them a serious look if one or many of our relievers suck ass.
LOL we're probably gonna cut Duvall and "wait on other teams to release people" per DOB. Sounds great guys. Derek Dietrich - minor league deal Carlos Gonzalez - minor league deal Curtis Granderson - minor league deal Cam Maybin - minor league deal (forget the DUI stuff) Lonnie Chisenhall - 1 year, $2.75M Robbie Grossman - 1 year, $2.00M John Jay - 1 year, $4.00M Adam Jones - 1 year, $3.00M Avisail Garcia- 1 year, $3.50M NAH, WE GOOD, WE GOT ADAM DUVALL WAIT NEVERMIND
Nice. Can't wait to see Julio ACE pitch a gem for 6 innings on Opening day only to see Freeman enter the game in the 7th and get crushed. Lots to look forward to
#Braves' Newcomb: 5 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 5 BB, 2 K, threw 49 strikes in 83 pitches. That's TWELVE walks in 12 innings over his past 3 starts, including 3 walks in 2 1/3 IP, 4 walks in 4 1/3 IP, and today's 5 in 5 IP. Lmao
What’s even worse is if AA picks up the phone to sign a FA or make a trade for another pitcher or two, the agents and gms know we are desperate now as opposed to 2 months ago when we appeared stockpiled with the big dick in the room. That won’t help negotiations.
AA had to prove he knows what he’s doing as gm. Not that Wisler was worth a damn, and I know his options were out, but that trade has proven to be pathetic.
Guess we have 3 legit guys in Soroka, Wright, and Touki. Use the rest for trade bait? Maybe Wilson too?
So here is where we are on the verge of opening day - Newk can't throw strikes again and is getting shelled (past 3 starts : 12 hits, 10 runs, 8 walks, 9 IP) - Gausman and Folty are probably starting on the DL or IR or whatever they call it now - Soroka is starting in AAA, which is the equivalent of being on the DL/IR - Minter and O'Day starting on DL/IR - Our top OF bench bat is going to get cut and replaced with waiver wire trash - Vizcaino is Vizcaino - 2 guys who weren't good enough to be on the roster or starters in the playoffs last year are a "lock" for the bullpen and our opening day starter - Kimbrel and Keuchel are just chillin On the plus side, Acuna is Acuna, Donaldson hasn't spontaneously combusted yet, our young pitchers have been very very good and there aren't any old guys on the 40 man available to block them. I can already see the first Juliace backdoor slider to Harper landing in the 3rd deck in Philly! It's almost here!
it is really hard to take you even remotely seriously if you're actually complaining about the wisler/sims deal. get a fucking grip
Gross Anderson and Muller looked great this spring Fried looks great Gohara will take some time but has a ton of upside Still have Wentz developing and Weigel coming back from TJ And Kolby Allard DA GAWD
All potential it seems. We are hoarding prospects and some of them are legit but we were ready to get rid of Gohara just a few months ago.
I wasn’t complaining, neither meant anything to us nor did Tucker. My point in saying that was the only reason I can think of that we didn’t sign any of those other guys and decided to rely on Duvall to somehow be a positive impact on our team in 2019 despite the financial commitments being very similar is because I think AA wanted to prove he was right. “Adam Duvall is somebody we’ve talked about for a while,” Anthopoulos said. “We’ve liked him. You look at the right-handed power the last two years, even this year, he’s still put up some solid power numbers. Really good defender. Defense is something we feel as a baseball ops group is really important, and this is a really good defender.” “Talked to Ender tonight, he was great,” Anthopoulos said. “His response was, ‘I just want to get to the playoffs.’ He’s awesome. I can’t say enough about him as a team guy. We take him for granted how good a defender hue is, but it’s just a move to make our team better.” “We’re raising the floor of the team, at minimum,” Anthopoulos said. “Helps us in the current year, helps us moving forward,” Anthopoulos said. “We’ll see. We have a little bit of time through tomorrow and tonight and we’ll see if we can come up with anything else.”
I don’t think AA cares about being right. If he did, he would’ve kept Joey Bats on the roster much longer than he did in actuality last year. The Duvall thing is pretty simple to me. He had a track record of hitting for power and very good defense in a full-time role. The Braves gave up nothing to find out if he could produce in a part-time role. It didn’t work last year, but he’s good enough to give him the spring to see if he could bounce back. By all accounts, it hasn’t, and they’ll rectify it. Plenty of spare part outfielders you would think when rosters pare down.
Duvall’s splits away from Cincy were really good too so there wasn’t any reason to think it was an anomaly either. I platooned him on my fantasy team 2 years ago against lefties and he was really solid.
Yea I had no problem with that trade. Was a very worthy flier for 2 guys who had shown nothing other than being back end pen guys or AAAA starters at a position we have loaded with guys. I am a little irritated that we just relied on him over the offseason not knowing if he'd snap out of it or not.
Duvall was less worthy of a chance to prove himself during the spring than 3/4 of the names on that list in the post to which I initially responded.
Yea I'm fine with him getting the spring to show he can contribute. I'm not super excited about putting all our 4th OF eggs in the Adam Duvall basket, though. Especially when we all know we're going to cut him and sign Ryan Flaherty.
Ok. That’s fine. Despite what most in this thread think it’s ok to have different opinions. I won’t even tell you to get a grip or calm down either.
Actually looks like Riley is going to be the 4th OF at this rate, as well as our 1b backup to Frederick
Yea.......I don't know what to think about that. One the one hand, I can't wait to see him. On the other hand, does he really need to be up here playing every 6th day and getting a few pinch hit appearances when he could be playing everyday in Gwinnett? I dunno.
Here's the thing about the guys on that list. The Braves have said all along that what they like the most about Duvall is his defense. They, to this point, value a glove in a 4th OF'er. That list: Derek Dietrich - -15 defensive runs saved last year Carlos Gonzalez - -8 defensive runs saved last year Curtis Granderson - -5 defensive runs saved last year Cam Maybin - +6 defensive runs saved last year Lonnie Chisenhall - -4 defensive runs saved in just 212 OF innings last year Robbie Grossman - -4 defensive runs saved last year Jon Jay - +7 defensive runs saved last year Adam Jones - -25 defensive runs saved last year Avisail Garcia - -4 defensive runs saved last year. Adam Duvall was +16 defensive runs saved last year. He also hits right-handed, giving some platoon protection to Ender. Jon Jay is a LHH, so he's out. Which leaves Cam Maybin, who hit .249/.326/.336 last year, for an 88 wRC+. If you want to say you'd rather have given Maybin a shot then a prove-it spring for Duvall, I'm fine with that, but it doesn't move the needle much for me either way.
Who should we replace Duval with? I'd rather sign a guy and let Riley and Pache get reps in the minors, but have no idea what the viable options are
