I had a wise old man tell me he didnt need a big house. Just big enough he could be on his side and his wife could stay on hers
I live in a 1080sqft apt and we don't need all this space. No kids obviously and probably no plans for it, but I always keep it in mind when perusing the housing/condo listings as we're somewhat in the market to buy.
office tv we didn't mount yet because its a little one. Eventually the plan is actually 9 tvs with one in the workshop and one for the deck. Will see if that happens though as every friggin thing I start to work on becomes a war, complete with cost and time overages. After the 18k quote for the missed foundation issues I'm installing new outlets throughout the house to try to get an easy win and make myself feel better.
i had 1 bedroom apartment that size in college. Did not like it. I mean I lived in a tent in Yosemite for 3 years so having a small space could be great but there it wasn't like you spent much time inside. This house is bigger than what I currently need but when I bought it my needs were different. It's 3500^2 but the bills really aren't all that bad. Also, better opportunity to raise the value (i hope) than in a smaller place. Dogs love it. Great for parties and such. Definitely a learning experience.
Listing our townhouse in Denver next week. Excited to get that done. Been renting it out for two years making basically no money on it. re: square footage debate, we currently have 2500 sf and my wife and I probably use about 1600 of that.
There were some delays in getting permits and getting the grading done. We signed in June I believe and actual construction just started last month. We expect to be in it before the summer though.
We have the same disease, my wife gets pissed at me. Currently at 7 plans for 8. Where are you nomads living these days?
TV's are so cheap these days and the streaming services so full of content I'll actually watch. Even thinking of looking into putting a TV above the soaking tub when the masterbath remodel is done.
Espn+, nbc sports and antenna covers about 95% of it. I have various other logins for other random events.
No doubt i will need a bigger place in a few years but we have adjusted to the small space for the time. Having a basement that is also 980 square feet helps a bit too.
Anyone else feel like googling stuff about a house is on par with getting a WebMD result? Read some stuff about ice damming now I’m like “Welp better get on the roof” after 3 inches of snow
shit, my wife and I moved from an 1100 sq foot 2-2 apartment to a 2900 sq foot house 6 months ago and we don't know how we ever lived that way before. You don't know how much better having more space is until you have it.
We’re going from just under 1300 to almost 3k and I’m already concerned with where we are going to put all my son’s crap.
Spent a day at work the other day with a guy from Maine who told me him and his wife were retiring to the apartment they just bought in NYC He told me they are trying to figure out how to downsize from their 6800 sf house in Maine to the 1700 sf apartment in NYC
Going off on a tangent... rode in an uber in Denver with this chick from Maine who spent 20 minutes describing how 3rd world Maine is as a state. Like public agencies without internet in recent past. Could not email information. School systems completely hapless and underfunded. Said that’s why all the horror stories gravitate to Maine because it’s so backwards. maybe there should be a thread about strange things in Maine? I had no idea this was a thing
Let the dog outside after work, noticed there’s a slow drip on my hose outside. It’s like 12 degrees, so that’s awesome. Hoping somehow I just needed to tighten the spigot handle with a screwdriver and it’ll be OK but we shall see. As someone who deals with extreme anxiety on a daily basis, I’m starting to think homeownership isn’t for me. Seems like everyday I’m worrying about something potentially being a disaster. I know this is just how it goes when you own a home + it’s 35+ years old, but damn I’m starting to lose my mind (50% serious).
I think 2700-3000 sf is the sweet spot for a family of 2-4. We went a little bigger and hate it. I miss my ranch.
I agree. Kids have own room. Space for an office if needed, kids playroom/man cave, guest bedroom, kids have own bathroom and a guest bathroom. we are looking to build in the next two years and I think we are around 3200 because I want a separate man cave from the kids playroom.
You’ll be ok dude. Stuff will happen from time to time. As long as you have some money squirreled away you’ll be ok. also, if this bothers you don’t ever buy a rental property.
No chance I buy a rental at this point haha And yeah, I know most cases it’s going to be a situation where I pay someone to fix it, or god forbid insurance covers it, or whatever. It is just the thought of it always is worse than it probably will be, like I see a small random drip on my hose and assume my basement will be flooded tomorrow haha when in reality I pay a couple hundred bucks to fix the spigot/somehow it’s like condensation from the fact it’s been -10 outside and today was close to 30.
Went to the house last night after everyone else left, contractors are finishing up the electrical changes we wanted. My wife is VERY anti-LED lights and they were made aware of that when we had the walk through last week. We had 22 can lights installed, every single one is a LED. I have a call and text into the contractor to reach out when he has time. I’m sure he’s got an inkling that somethings up but I didn’t want to drop that on him in a voice mail or text message. I hate shit like this.
Something about blue light, I don’t know I quit listening. She’s crazy, we’re sourcing the stain from Spartanburg SC because they claim zero VOCs. Nothing like getting 5 gallons of non-freezable stain shipped to Ohio in the winter.
This is not a LED thing, this is a color temperature thing. Ask for 3000K LEDs and your wife will be happy while your energy bill also goes down.
You should let her know that LEDs aren’t bright white any more unless you’re a psycho and ask for them
