Should probably re-do it all anyway. No chance any of that is up to code.

Who has installed blinds recently? Any places better than another? 10 years ago I just got some from Lowe's and installed them myself

I bought from Lowe’s at my last 2 houses. Most recently 3 years ago now. My advice would be to take a tape measure to Lowe’s and measure each one before you leave. One time I went the girl didn’t have a clue how to use the machine to custom size and cut everything like 1/4” to long. Oh and measure your windows to make sure they are completely square.

I can tell I’m about to spend a fortune on landscape lighting. I started a 4-part 3 hour and 20 min YouTube series on pruning Japanese Lace Leaf Maples last night. Internet is awesome.

I made the woman measure one last time that she swore would fit the window out of the box without cutting. She was mad I questioned here.

We just did this and kichler was recommended. I know two sets of electricians who install outdoor lighting and they both say the same thing. Never get shit from Home Depot or Lowe’s especially if you think you’re saving money. You’ll spend as much money fixing them than if you would have just paid for decent lights in the long run.

I neglected to mention in my last write up that I had also COMPLETELY stripped the screw holding one of the stem knobs on and it was a minor miracle I was able to pull it off around 1am that night to make the final stem and seat replacement that (temporarily?) solved the leak.

Turns out this was a pivotal detail to the next chapter of the story:

You see, the means by which I was able to unscrew the stripped screw holding the knob on was to jam a flathead screwdriver against the screwhead where the hole was stripped out and give it a swift punch with a huge framing hammer - that notched the divot in the screwhead enough that I was able to turn the flathead driver to get it dislodged and back it out.

the force that I used with the hammer made me nervous at the time, but it seemed no harm/ no foul at the time so thought all was well on my fix... until last night —

I heard the hissing of running water coming loudly from that bathroom when I went back there around dinnertime, but nothing coming from the spigot. “Oh #£$& I cracked the 60 year old pipes,” is my natural and logical reaction. So I shut off the water at the city side of the main again when I went to bed in anticipation of an expensive investment in professional services the next day.

Was actually able to get a plumber on the phone this morning and they show up by around 9. (Thankfully he’s wearing a filter/ mask thing when he shows up so my break of quarantine is a little bit mitigated.) Nonetheless, he goes into bathroom and hears the sound I heard, and then we pretty quickly start talking about whether he needs to tear into the tile or the sheetrock on the backside in the adjacent bedroom wall to fix the issue.... /I am arrdubs rapidly depleting bank account

So then I take him outside so he can go under the house to see how big of a lake I’ve filled in my crawl space at this point. From meter readings the night before I’m thinking roughly 100 gallons (?) got dumped every couple hours that this thing was leaking, which could be roundabout 20 hours cumulatively from my fix that it went unchecked.

I walk him to the scuttle hole and then go back inside to work at my laptop, feeling very pleased at how catastrophic this has all turned out. He calls my phone in a few minutes to bring me outside, so he can share the final diagnosis - I left a hose on in the backyard, and the hissing that what we heard was just the echo in the pipes.

so as a final parting gift he repacks the valve on the water main to stop that leak, gives me a quote for a long term fix to the knobs/valves on the tub (which are still dry as a bone), and just charges me about $80 for a diagnostic visit.

LONG STORY SHORT MY FIX WORKED SO I AM ALSO A MASTER PLUMBER

(who sometimes may forget to turn off a hose and therefore don’t save any money on professional assistance) :badasswolf::blount::cmon::mulletsmug:

spend the extra money and get mechanized shades. Best investment ever. "Alexa, close the blinds,' and the 6 window blinds in my living room close on their own. Has absolutely paid for itself already.

I paid 5k for my entire house. 15 windows. 7 of them we got mechanical. but it was absolutely worth it. No chance my lazy ass would go through my living/family room every day and pull the blinds on them.

Been using selectblinds.com and recommend them. Tons of options, good quality. They are always running some type of sale that usually end up the same savings but we’ve hit some good ones. Good customer service too. They messed an order up and resent new ones almost immediately. I forget exactly what happened but the messed up order fit a different window so we basically scored a free set.

Also interested in the calculus of determining value right away.

I'm as lazy as the next guy and have many things smart (speaker, tv, cable package, lights, etc) in my house, but curtains ($$$$) would be stretching it.

How much would non-smart curtains have been?

We have motorized in our bedroom but nowhere else in the house. It was much better to put it on a schedule/Alexa than manually opening and closing 6 each day. The light definitely helps the mood. I think it’s money well spent but we have had them close to 6 years.

I'm not home for the install, my fiance is, but apparently we have a 3 prong outlet (dryer came with 3 prong as well), but our outlet was designed for a range? And the ground is shaped like an I on our outlet and the dryer is shaped like an L. He recommended having an electrician update the outlet to a 4 prong and purchase a new cord.

Fiance is also worried now that an electrician might refuse to upgrade it because our box is full and needs updated.

Got a quote on a Cedar 6' fence. Everyone told me to buckle up, but I could not believe how much they came in at. 256' of fence = $9,200. Looks like we will be doing black chain link (the only other option I can do at the property) for ~3500.
