We have cedar columns as well. I've been going around checking each of them and no signs of bee damage yet.
I think cedar being exposed to the elements is fine as it's much more naturally resistant to moisture damage as well as insect damage Cedar is hard to keep looking nice and fresh for a long time when exposed to the elements though Shit like stained 1/4" plywood (bead board) sure looks nice at first
Again, redwood is much like cedar It's much more suited to standing up to the elements Plywood and what looks like Whitewood crown molding in Degausser s picture, are not suited for outdoor use
Of course, my home had Masonite siding when I bought it That was a manufactured siding product that everyone thought was great when it came out, but turned out its fucking trash and only lasts 10 years or so before rotting away, so they don't even make it anymore.
Coastal CA is pretty mild when it comes to the elements too We restained the house in 2004, and it's time to do it again We added on an upstairs master suite in 2005 and it was tough finding tight grain redwood siding to match the existing, and the painter had fun trying to match the new to the old since the same stain on different age siding looks different
Found a carpenter bee drilling into our 3 month old swing set/fort. I used spray foam and filled the hole with him straight in it. Anything else to do to prevent them?
Like if a single post starts to rot out, is it able to be replaced without tearing out the rest of the deck, individually. We just moved into a house with a second story deck and one of the posts looks to be in not so great shape.
Oh yeah for sure. The how could be a few difference way, but I can’t think of something that would keep it from being replaced individually.
Cool, thanks. Have been having anxiety over how much that may potentially cost me down the road. Just wasn't sure how feasible it was given how high up the deck is.
Can you tell us approximately how long your existing deck has been there ? There's way to many desk jockeys (and wives of desk jockey) in this thread second guessing everything
Hardi board is the most popular at the moment Rock and brick of course Vinyl is actually a viable option if done well
I’m thinking as an alternative to the porch cover underneath layer like he has that looks just as good
as someone who has been on and around EMAW FC's dick, I mean deck multiple times, it is fine. way too many people playing Mike Holmes in here
Nothing looks like stained bead board that I know of There is probably something out there that costs a bunch more and will give that look, but like I said, I'm not in residential construction
No clue. Bought the house summer 2017. It was looking kinda beat up then. My guess is like 15 years old
dated all our appliances after continuing to fiddle with the dishwasher, all '08 urge to just replace all the kitchen appliances rising. surprised how highly rated basically everything GE is, oddly everyone in my family owns Bosch dishwashers and loves them too.
Neighbor has wooden columns on their porch. They also have the most annoying fucking woodpecker that loves it. I would have killed that fucker long ago.
Buying a house while prepping one for sale with a pregnant wife and a 2 year old who is potty training, transitioning to a bed, and sick from being away from daycare for a year is NOT as glamorous as it sounds
Don't know anything about clover mites but have been fighting a war against spider mites for last two years. What are they on?
I noticed they were inside on the side glass panes around my front door. Resealed just about everything but in the last week they have been multiplying. All over the front of my house. I pressure washed them yesterday. Going to see how this week is and probably get some pest control. I was hoping for a quick fix. They are a nuisance but when you crush them they leave behind a red residue.
Different situation than mine. I have a row of emerald green arborvitaes that a couple years ago I noticed were looking weird. Took me a while to figure out what was going on, eventually figured out it was spider mites but I ended up losing 4 of them. I have tried some pretty hardcore pesticides myself and nothing has gotten rid of them. Now I just know that sometime in early spring they'll start up and I'll hit them with this spider mite spray from lowes, that'll slow them down. Then every 3 days or so I go out and spray the trees down with the jet setting from my hose. Apparently they are slow and the hose knocks them off and takes them a while to get back on and start eating again. None of that is probably super helpful but good luck cause if clover mites are anything like spider mites they are some tough son of bitches.
The thousand injuries of Foundcarpenterbeeato I had borne as I best could, but when he ventured upon insult I vowed revenge.
More like a shitty week. First I can get someone to come out here is this coming Friday. Most companies I called were 2 weeks out.
Did our final walk through yesterday afternoon. Sellers left a bunch of stuff we want, including the riding mower and $2,000 projector. Walked the property and it started to hit us how much maintenance is going to be required. We’re now thinking about sub leasing the back 1.5 acres a friend to grow hemp or weed just so we don’t have to deal with it.
Appraisal on the house we bought with a $60k appraisal waiver came back $5k over the purchase price But only because they took off $15k for the janky ass foundation
yep. i had to get mine inspected before i closed and i had trouble finding anyone within a couple of weeks. absolutely sucks that every house in our town is on a septic.
Holy f lumber is nuts https://www.google.com/amp/s/seekin...futures-limit-up-as-breakneck-rally-continues
Somebody please make it stop. I’m ready to build but sure as shit not doing it at these prices. Fear number 1 is that it will be at minimum another full year before prices come down fear number 2 is that prices don’t come down and this just becomes the new normal.
I think lumber settles somewhere between where it is now and where it was. I would be shocked if we saw last years prices anytime soon.
