Yeah i will eventually get to the point of replacing the flooring ing with something not as yellow and painting the cabinets. You should have seen it when the room was painted a yellowish white, it was just so much.
Since the correct order to attach jumper cables is fresh in my mind I’ll be ready and waiting to start calling people dumb when they post ITT that they had to look it up. Edit: wrong thread
Got a new roof today, that insurance mostly paid for. Do I get to keep the 12 leftover roofing shingle packages and other stuff that was leftover?
When ours got replaced there were 3-4 packs leftover. The foreman of the crew put two packs in my garage, and said in case you need it later.
Switched my condo insurance to State Farm from Geico today. I’m assuming they all suck equally and hoping I never have to use it for anything major. It was a couple hundred bucks more annually but am getting the money back and then some on auto insurance savings
Yes and you also get to keep all the nails in your yard, attic and driveway. get a rolling magnet and go over the yard a few times especially if you have kids
I’m not judging because you probably don’t know but I work in commercial contracting and a lot of those guys bring their own tools for stuff. Residential could be different
well they can deduct their expenses against their revenue to lower their taxable income -- this is all before you even get to personal tax returns. I'm actually saving them on taxes.
Met this morning with our contractor to talk about the office remodel we're doing before moving in to our new digs. Looks like I'm going to be swinging a single jack and wielding a sawzall again
Going to look at windows Monday morning. No idea what I'm really supposed to be looking for. Guess I could research this weekend. Is the main cost driver energy efficiency?
My GC has a deal w a warehouse that is primarily Marvin, that's what I've been looking at. Some good ones online, but I'm just going off aesthetics. Guess that's why Im going to tour, tho
Main cost driver is 75% brand name, 25% materials. Much of the glazing is produced by 3rd party plants, so the insulated panels should be similar in performance across new windows. There are some architectural details that are worth considering depending on your aesthetic. Glass treatments for anti-glare etc. The DP rating refers to air/vapor infiltration vs pressure/wind speed. SHGC is solar heat gain coefficient. I like an aluminum clad window with a factory prefinished interior, but you're going to spend some serious money for a house full of those. Fixed windows will be the cheapest by half if they don't need to operate/open, like high in gables etc. Bedrooms typically require windows of a certain size for egress. Windows near stairs and within bathrooms will likely need to be tempered glass. Holler if you end up needing help sorting through the details, I've helped a couple guys with similar stuff, or tried to.
I’d rank Andersen ahead of Marvin but there is a price premium. Both MN companies though so they’re obviously great.
I'm going to have big, 8'-10' windows/doors in the living room that fold up accordion style. My concern is these are going to get caught and eventually break. Anybody have bi-fold doors? Spoiler https://www.marvin.com/products/doors/bi-fold/ultimate-bi-fold-door https://www.marvin.com/products/doors/bi-fold/elevate-bi-fold-door Is it kosher to mix-and-match window quality? Like, I'll want nice windows on my main floor to capture the views, but the back of my house abuts pretty close to the woods and I don't need shit for views there.
Make sure to let your structural person know about this door decision. Those hang from the head jamb, so there's additional load on that header. Bi-parting sliders cost less and accomplish a similar effect.
Yeah I always see videos of little mechanical contraptions in peoples homes. Recently I saw a dog food feeder built into a cabinet. My only thought was imagining how frustrating it would be when that thing fucked up.
We replaced all of our windows 20 years ago with Eagle, which got bought out by Andersen. Same window quality but shittier pot metal cranks and fixtures. IIRC it was a PITA to make sure all the measurements for the order were precisely what they needed to be. Be meticulous
if you get any tempered glass, check the sticker before it gets installed. They almost installed the wrong one when we got ours done
