I have Kwikset that works fine and looks decent. You can swap out the deadbolt to match all the exterior locks around the house.
A) keep a key with you or easily accessible outside B) make sure the lock can be used without power and/or internet C) get one that doesn’t use wifi (so zwave, zigbee, etc). Wifi consumes a lot of power comparatively find something that meets those criteria
I have a Hornbill lock on my front door It has a thumbprint sensor, a keypad, fobs, and a key. It works via wifi too, but has a plug in powered hub that is what connects to the actual wifi, so the batteries in the lock last a very long time. I installed it in 2021 and have changed batteries once. Can also lock and unlock via Alexa voice command or directly in their app. In the app you can assign different key codes for different users, can assign one time or short time codes for guests. It also stores a bunch of different finger prints. It pretty much has every feature I've seen on home locks available in one unit, except for maybe the key to match existing key thing
To unlock it asks you for the pass code Literally have only ever used Alexa to unlock the door when I first set it up, not sure i even remember what the pass code is for that function It's super nice to be able to be walking out the door and say Alexa, lock the door
Yea, that's easy too Like I have it lock automatically a couple times during the day/night just to make sure Alexa often pops up on my phone as well, suggesting that it thinks nobody is home and asks if I want to lock the door The door lock has no positive feedback to alexa for alexa to know its locked, but it's a completely different action for it to lock vs unlock, so it can be locked and you tell it to lock and it just activates the lock function again leaving the door locked, so NBD
I don’t trust Alexa she can stay away from my door also how many doors would your door lock lock if a door lock could lock doors
Buying home for the first time. Inspector noted bathroom vents go to attic rather than outside. I read online this can cause moisture/mold.How big of a deal is this/is it something I can ask them to fix?
When the machines rise up against their human masters I’m going to be thankful they don’t have my personal information!
Also a small water stain in the attic that per the inspector is now completely dry (tested with moisture meter and thermal camera). Overlying shingles have been replaced. Would you have a roofer check or is the moisture meter and thermal camera enough to be confident it's solid?
Does anyone have a keypad deadbolt they like? Because Im about to fucking smash mine with a hammer and then light it on fire. Thing is a piece of shit and only works like 60% of the time.
My home depot had the kwikset power bolt 250 for $20 a few months ago. They had 2 models and it was only on one. The sale wasn't advertised...just went to the register and bam, it appeared
you can ask for anything and they can say yes/no it’s about leverage and in this market with interest rates up compared to recent years I think buyers tend to have a lot of leverage Every house has issues, but if I were buying, I would ask for the moon, and hope some chump like NoNatty is over leveraged on a different property and will offer you monetary concessions or pay to fix routine things that you could probably fix for yourself cheaply
Anybody have solar and an at home battery station? Wondering if you use it to power an EV? Closing on a house and wondering if it’s feasible? Have 30 panels in the house, owned outright, 5 years old. Utilities company writes the current homeowner a check each year for the $$ it puts back into the grid.
I would think you'd rather pump juice into the grid during the day and then charge at night. I dont think i would attempt to charge my ev off a battery system. it's already cheap to charge the ev, why tax the gear? i know very little about home battery systems, what kind of kW can they output
i have a schalge and i like it a lot, I also upgraded my garage door to one with a battery backup specifically for the reason you outlined... If you install it yourself, its not too expensive.
You can also get the myq setup for the garage for $20-30. Let's you open/close with the app, but the real value is you can get an alert when the door has been left open for X minutes.
There are options like this that work with apple home too, if you are already in that ecosystem, look on amazon for the Meross homekit garage door opener.
Wouldn't that entail cutting a hole in the roof and sealing it? I wouldn't be touching that one by myself if my goal was to reduce attic moisture
Yea I am also a fan of the rules. I have one where if the door is open at midnight it auto closes. Saved me a few times it was forgotten about.
Went with Schlage for the smart lock / deadbolts & it's been flawless for 5 years - Believe it was the Encode line. Looks as if they's updated it & now have an Encode+
Removed about 400 square feet of sod by hand (pickaxe) this weekend and planted two trees from a 20 gallon pots. My body hates me.
I have to do this in the next couple weeks. How much bigger does the hole have to be than the root ball?
At least 2x as wide. A few other tips, make the hole square to discourage circling roots, be sure to not plant too deep (you should be able to see the root flare), and when you remove tree from the pot, break up the root ball a bit.
had spent several weeks working with a landscape company to work up a design for our backyard. was going to be an expensive project but we were very excited about it. finally finalized the plan 10 days ago. we paid the 50% deposit. Work was going to start in 7-10 days. my wife gets a text today and it turns out the guy we hired just lost 2 fingers on a job and is leaving this industry in order to focus on his rehab. So I guess we need to find a new company for the work! absolutely wild.
also I feel I need to clarify that I use regular locks on my door and have a key outside that is kept within a small lockbox with a 4 digit code. thanks, wayne
I feel this. I removed about 200 sf of sod this weekend and I've planted 7 trees in the past 2 weeks, although they were 10 and 15 gallon pots, not 20. Didn't know about the square holes, but it's too late now. Need to add more mulch this afternoon to 3 of them. What kind of trees did you plant?
