Depends, IMO. Hotel for smaller groups and Air BnB for larger groups Also don’t like how you have to clean Air BnBs
I’m traveling more with just my wife and I, so it’s definitely hotels for us. Airbnb still has a place for large groups, but they’ve also got so expensive with all the additional fees.
Yup. Feel like you get screwed by all the fees for airbnb now. Why am I paying a $150 cleaning fee if I have to take the trash out and strip the beds? Also, the consistency of what you get out of a hotel vs Airbnb is a big factor for me.
Voted hotels but agree that it’s very much a case by case basis. Haven’t taken a trip since Europe in 2019 but we did both hotels and Air BNBs on that trip
Hotels. Not even close when you factor in what short term rentals are doing to housing markets and all the other effects from that as well.
Airbnb used to be better but these $250 cleaning fees while hosts still give specific requests on cleaning before you leave has changed things
I exclude work trips for this. Airbnb all day every day. I'll pay double, triple, or whatever to have extra space and to not be in the same room as my kids. I only vacation at a mountain or a beach though, and can see the place for a hotel in the city.
Both. Airbnb with friends or family when we are staying somewhere for a few days or more. Hotels when traveling/staying alone, on business, or only a one/two night stay. Hotels have used COVID as an excuse to let cleaning standards go to absolute shit which lessens their appeal, but high quality service at a nice hotel is something I value very highly.
For my wife and I only once or twice has an Airbnb type place made sense from a convenience/cost standpoint versus a hotel within the US, but on all of our trips to Europe and Asia in the past 5 years it has been the opposite - we almost never stay in a hotel. Within the US I've found the cost for just the two of us is comparable to a hotel, and then once you tack on the increasingly large cleaning fees then a hotel stay wins out We have done it a few times on trips within the US with extended family and it has worked out great. There's definitely a benefit though for multiple couples travelling together, or families with kids above 5 or 6 years old.
I think I said something like “You should be fine staying there but I wouldn’t go walk around the surrounding area at night”
I used to think air bnb was cool but all the rules and bullshit you have to do have changed my mind over the years team hotels
AirBNB pretty much dead to me. My fiance and are I going to Italy for a honeymoon late this year and I heard you are better off in AirBNBs.
International Airbnb market is much better than Domestic market. Especially in a developing country/small towns in a foreign country. I love small beach towns in Mexico/Latin America and there usually aren't many hotel options in those areas. I use airbnbs most of the time, but will do a hotel if I'm arriving late/departing early -- check-in process is much easier with a hotel.
I have no data to back this up, but I don't think airbnb has significantly impacted the housing markets abroad like it has in the US. Probably just a matter of time, though. I do agree that airbnb is a huge problem in US cities.
Short term rentals have really messed up resort towns and has out priced the local service economy workers. That’s a completely different thread so probably shouldn’t really get into it here. Also, hard pass on paying the cleaning fees for a 1-3 night stay for one or two people. Groups is much more understandable.
That's fair. I rarely travel to resort towns but don't disagree with you, have read the same Also, wrt to cleaning fees and check-out instructions, you can avoid that with a little research on the front end. Yes, more airbnbs are charging outrageous fees and dumb check-out instructions, but not all -- you can review the fees and instructions prior to booking and choose one that doesn't have all that. They still exist.
I like having a full kitchen and making my own breakfast. I also work a lot abroad so having a desk/designated work area is generally better in an airbnb. I guess if I was strictly vacation mode and rarely in my spot I'd mostly agree with you.
Hotels when it's just me and my wife. Air Bnbs with young kids. Absolutely love staying in a really nice hotel when it's just us.
Yep totally depends on the type of travel. AirBNB for international has been great. If I’m just going to some city a state over for a weekend or event then it’s Hotel.
Personally I havent gotten sick (yet) of hostels, as a solo tripper, less comfortable but what you get in return (meeting cool people internationally) is great
If I'm travelling by myself, or maybe if it's just me and my wife (prior to us having a kid), then hotel. If it's the three of us then AirBnB is so much better still.
Boy do I have news for you about a way you can pay double to have a different hotel room from your kids
This happened to me the past few years. I stayed in a few over the past couple of months and have definitely aged out. I party less than in my 20s which is a big factor. I'll do a language meet-up or meet people in other settings.
Hotel in most cases but in LA really liked the Airbnb experience, liked being in the middle of a neighborhood where it felt more like the experience of a resident vs that of a tourist
Hotels. I'm so tired of looking for an AirBnB, clicking on one that is $130/night just to find out that it has a $250 cleaning fee.
This totally depends on the location and amount of people going. Also, what kind of vacation rentals are you guys renting that you have to clean? Every one I have stayed at has a very reasonable cleaning fee already added on the contract.
As much as I'd love to do that with a 3 year old and a 9 month old, I don't think that would be all that responsible.
It’s absolutely buttfucked heavy tourist cities abroad. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/09/22/travel/barcelona-airbnb.html
Really depends. Domestic cities it's usually hotels. But I'll look for AirBnBs if I'm traveling with my young child. Resort towns like Skiing, usually in an AirBnB. Beaches...I hate huge resort hotels. Don't do many beach vacations domestically, internationally it depends. Most Caribbean, Central & South America I did AirBnBs over hotels. Bali I did all hotels. South Africa it was hotels. Portugal will be a mix of both. Right now I have a kid that naps for 3 hours a day so it's pretty key for him to have his own room and us have our own pool/outdoors spot. So that's almost always AirBnB. I like have a full kitchen/real coffee maker. I don't really care that I have to take out a bag of trash, it's not that big of a deal. Some of the cleaning fees are stupid & make it not worth it at times. Really depends
