Finished couple days ago, love Spacey and enjoy Underwood smugly breaking the 4th wall. Really have to wait a whole year for the second season?!
On episode three, two comments: 1. Spacey reminds me of IRL politician and SC Lt. Governor Glenn McConnell with his voice and mannerisms. 2. Lol at a mixed-race congregation at a church in SC.
Just finished the entire series. I'll probably post more thoughts later, but I thought it was great. Kevin Spacey is amazing.
will someone spoiler what his end goal is in regards to his manipulation? whats going on with the teacher union? I've had bad luck while watching and don't feel like re-watching.
you'll figure it out. I don't think you're supposed to know his end game before ep 10 or so, I think he has a plan all along but he also has to adapt. I'm not sure what you want to know about the teacher unions and how far you are.
I am not to his "end game" yet but something feels funny to me about the way he's boosting Russo for Pennsylvania governor. Can't see why he'd legitimately back that trainwreck. Obviously if he wins it gives him a powerful ally but the guy seems too volatile to me. It's a given he'd start drinking and drugging and cause a huge scandal
Hint: If you watch the show, your questions will be answered. If I tell you the answer, it sort of ruins the point.
finished it last night. Spoiler can't decide if Zoe will be able to get anything out of the commissioner. he's really the only "loose end" that hasn't been addressed. Stamper's got Rachel on lock down. Zoe doesn't really have much right now.
Predictions for season 2: Spoiler Zoe dies. Frank fucks something up as Vice-President, possibly repercussions from a scandal, and his presidential candidacy for 2020 becomes questionable. He still ends up running. Frank wins over Russo's girlfriend.
Finished it this weekend and thought it was great. I've already watched the first 2 chapters again. Love it and can't wait for Season 2.
Just watched Chapter 11. Would have been an excellent finale IMO but I will withhold further judgment until I watch the final two chapters. And holy shit, Frank Underwood is about the snake life.
Just watched Chapter 2. Really liked it. Question: Spoiler Claire is firing all people at work due to not having the extra money from Francis not being nominated SOS, right? Also, is Linda the majority leader? Didn't catch what her position was.
Spoiler Claire is firing people because Sancorp took their donation off the table (you will see this), which was tied to Francis, yes. No, you will meet the majority leader soon.
watched and thoroughly enjoyed the first 2 episodes last night. will not be back itt until the conclusion of my journey
And those are the top 2 shows out there. If you haven't watched The Newsroom get on it. It's probably #3 best show to me.
How would you compare Newsroom to House of Cards? I like the news/journalistic aspect of House of Cards more than Newsroom. My undergrad was journalism. Maybe the optimism of Newsroom is just a little too much for me
Also this show kind of reminds me of the Wire with intertwined yet separate characters, and how this is almost a snapshot in time following politics. To elaborate on that second statement there have been Frank Underwood's before and there will be Frank Underwood's after, same with Zoe Barnes. Just like there will always be Avon Barksdales and Mcnulty's (sp?), we just saw an snapshot of it.
I like that part of your take. This is more straight forward than the Wire though. Less characters; easier to figure out what's going on. The Wire took several episodes before I had things sorted out. They don't just go "ok now look at this guy, this is his name and this is his story, ok now pay attention because he's a main character."
Yeah. I didn't watch The West Wing but it's by the same guy and I heard it was the same way. I like that heartless shit like House of Cards more
Spoiler 1. Gillian Cole character is a bitch. hate people that try to use the legal system for attention. really just hate political idealists in general 2. Is Remy Danton the only lobbyist in Washington? Surely he isn't the only guy behind the scenes that influences campaign spending. I'd like to see a couple more lobbyists introduced than just him 3. Hopefully we get to see the naked pictures of Zoe 4. I have a feeling Frank will be running for President before he is Vice President. Curious to see how it works out 5. It's nice to see females that want power not act all cunty on TV. Kate Mara and Robin Wright put this show over the top.
The breaking of the 4th wall gives easier insight to Underwood. He's complex yet easy to understand because we get his direct thinking. This is only one season too, i'm just speculating the show will stay at this high level, and keep developing. Another thing I love is that Spacey is more akin to Bryan Cranston than anyone in the Wire. I know I'm saying some big things, but I really enjoyed this show.
I think Remy is supposed to represent the idea of a singular interest being too far into the pocket of one person in power, especially because lobbying/staffing is often times a revolving door. Plus, "Sancorp" is supposed to represent a huge oil company, and there is certainly a narrative about how much money they have to spend. I have less of a problem with not introducing other lobbyists (there is the teacher's union lobby as well), and more Remy's over the top style of expressing pay to play.
Spoiler I also can't wait to see Robin Wright destroy that bitch in court. Did anyone else feel bad for Adam? Dude didn't push anything and was just lead on by Wright, then she just leaves him saying you can't love him for more than a week. Seemed like a good dude.
I know the "4th wall" discussion has been had, but my take is that it doesn't bother me when he talks to the camera. I do laugh a little bit when he turns to the camera and gives one of these though
My undergrad was History so i enjoy the historical aspect of both (The Newsroom-actual events, House of Cards- behavior of those in government) That's my connection between the two. It's a TV show made in Hollywood, having a problem with it being too preachy or too optimistic should be left at the door.
Can't imagine Netflix would pay the type of money they did if it couldn't qualify, but no one knows for sure just yet.
I think it was pretty obvious that they drew a line between physical cheating and emotional cheating, and she was leaning that way. Edit: Just to add, I don't think anyone outside of Frank and her knew how they handled that arrangement. He obviously was looking for a relationship with her and knew she was married.
