My junior year my school played some team from TN that had three legit D1 guys. Their point guard was as tall as our forwards and the first 6 points of the game for them were back door allyoops to the same guy.

There has been some good talent in that tournament over the years if I remember correctly.

You are correct & this years version will have the most talent ever with Petty, Langford, & the Landman kid from James Clemmens. Lee always has quality players as well.

Just moved a few doors down. Its probably 5x as big now. They have a bar, too. Huge upgrade. It is impressive.

Also, I've never understood why people buy liquor there. Cheaper at the ABC store right next door.

Not just Huntsville related, but AL is proposing a 40% tax on anything sexually explicit in nature. Adult stores, strip clubs, etc are who would be targeted. The supporters are trying to say it would generate millions in tax revenue but I doubt that. Those businesses would dry up quick, I doubt many businesses could survive a tax increase of that much.

I have to repair my Kelty rainfly and just got off the phone with Kelty (Boulder, CO) about just buying a new one and they said well I don't know how close your are to Haleyville, AL but they do all of our repairs for free. It's about 50 miles SW from Decatur.

It looks like they actually produce some gear at the Haleyville site. If they have a factory store and sell stuff there I'll let you know.

Was checking to see if the Space and Rocket Center was going to be playing The Martian in IMAX this week and I didn't see anything. Anybody heard anything? Surely they will have it. I saw Interstellar there last year and it was awesome.

So... nobody has discussed the dead body found at Target in Jones Valley?

27 year old murdered by her 41 year old boyfriend who was on probation for drug charges.

I've heard rumors that part of her remains were found near or in a dumpster behind the target and the other part in the front parking lot.

Also heard she was a drug user. Her family pretty much kicked her to the curb when she was younger and now they're asking for donations for her funeral. I highly doubt that money goes towards her funeral. Especially after I heard another story that one of their sons was sending money home when he was in Iraq, assuming they were putting it in the bank, but when he returned he found that they spent it.

In Mayor Battle's "state of the union" address last Friday he said one thing they were thinking about doing was making like a cable car/monorail/train type deal that runs from downtown out to the Bridge Street/Research Park area to try to attract younger people to the city by having easier access for people to get to bars and restaurants between the two areas.

That sounds like a gigantic waste of money. They need to just take that money and put it to something else and really push Uber.

Well, that's never going to happen. He doesn't even believe it's a legit possibility. Nothing more than something to say before the next election. It would be awesome though. Uber would be awesome but is Huntsville big enough?

Does it go through the lumber yard area? Think I've heard something about that, too.

I agree, though. Waste of money

It's not going to happen but I don't think it would be the waste of money y'all are making it out to be. It would be huge from a development/consumer standpoint. Think about how many more people you could bring downtown. That's more money for restaurants, bars, shops, vbc ticket sales, etc.

Edit: I wouldn't be surprised to learn that there is some type of funding available for the development of these types of projects. Federal funds, DOT funds, TVA money, etc. I doubt the City would foot the entire bill.

Would people actually change their shopping/eating/drinking habits if that came to downtown? It would shock me if you could get the Huntsville consumer to walk around and shop for hours without a car at the ready.

good question but if downtown received the kind of consistent foot traffic that bridge street does it would be great for the city

Keep in mind that there are two major mixed use developments going up over the next 2 plus years. There will be a lot of stuff to do, relatively speaking of course. If folks from Madison could hop on a train to come downtown, and vice versa, both areas would benefit.

No doubt. I'm not sure what the city has done to get retail (specifically higher end) into downtown, but that would go a long way into getting people to change their habits. I mean think about how well an Anthropologie or an Urban Outfitters would do in downtown with a nice space that avoids the "strip mall" feel. Downtown Franklin, TN is a good comparison, but they have a significant demographic advantage with Nashville so close.

I'm not sure what the infrastructure upgrades around all that are, but incrementally, how much would a train really add? Everyone who would shop there has a car (outside of underage kids, but they wouldn't contribute significantly to store revenue) and if getting there and parking is relatively easy, who is actually taking that train?

Speaking as a current resident of a city that needs A LOT more trains - getting public transit buy-in is insanely difficult in this region. There needs to be some kind of transportation issue, which there currently is not. As Menelaus said, folks will just jump in their cars if they want to come to town.

That's a good point. A lot the complaints recently have been about parking, so I think that would help. To be fair, I'm probably thinking more about what I hope the area looks like in 5-10 years than what it does now.

And, as I've said, it's never going to happen.

Yeah if Huntsville continues urbanizing, something like that begins to make more sense. The attitude towards MARTA in Atlanta is a good example of what happens when you take a short term view on public transportation.

Only such issue I can imagine would be getting people to the arsenal quicker, easier, cheaper, etc. That traffic is a bitch and you know engineers would jump at the chance to save gas money. But it's nowhere near bad enough to realistically pursue a train. Plus, they'd still have to drive to wherever the stop would be.

I just think it would be a gigantic waste of money when you can drive from the Washington Street ramp to I-565 to Bridge Street in like 6 minutes.

Revisit the train idea in a decade or two. What Huntsville really needs to focus on right now is municipal fiber internet. Basically just copy all of Chattanooga's good ideas.

Good call. They're in the process of that now. I think the company is called Southern Light. As I understand it, they're laying the infrastructure in what is essentially a giant loop around the city. Problem is that it will only be available to businesses at first, primarily those on or near the arsenal. I think there will have to be a third party to tie into the line and bring it to private citizen's homes, etc.
