I don't think anyone will argue that the dudes portaling didn't have their warts. I'm just skeptical we'll replace him with someone better or with more potential, just like Gbayor and Butler.
some of these kids entering the portal are going to want to hold on to their butts. with the 105 limit and every team also signing 25-30 high schoolers, the math doesn't work out that everyone is going to find a spot at an FBS school. for example Vincent Jackson might have a bad tim
The 105 limit could be a real boon to the non P4 and FCS schools. Like Kaelin, who has no film, but a MAC school should take a flier on him at the risk of him popping and then getting a bag in two years from a P4
nah I hear you. Just saying that we can’t judge a portal szn until it’s finished and we take stock of who we lost and who we gained.
Princewill was a ghost this season. Hot take: James Williams is only better by comparison. Overall, edge was really disappointing this year. I won't cry about any of them leaving
Teary eyed fans will be completely surprised to see all these big losses end up on teams w a worse record than us and/or in the g5
Im kind of surprised there wasn’t some kind of ramp-down period before landing at 105. This will probably help out smaller schools and create more parity which I guess will be cool for fans/chaos. Just seems crazy to force some teams to drop 20-30 guys plus squeeze in a full recruiting class and portal guys.
So far Butler is the biggest loss to me, but that’s partially due to losing a true “dawg” on top of a starter.
This is where I’m at. We’re not losing any 1st round picks or anything so they should be replaceable but history shows it’s not that easy for us. Plus it’s a pipe dream to think we’ll ever have a Georgia level roster, so losing a contributor/starter still hurts even if they’re just average. I mean replacing Omar Brown and Newsome appeared to be harder than expected in hindsight.
similar to giving every active athlete in the NCAA a free covid year without temporarily increasing scholarship limits to account for younger classes coming in, thinking about the ramifications before making a drastic change is not really a thing in college athletics right now.
Makes me concerned about Knighton tbh, they're really tight. Maybe he was tight with Tony though too?
Williams had like 2 really good games in his career and has a cool story. Not glad he's leaving but let's not pretend he's something he's not. Actually think Wallin has more potential
This is a roster of kids that are incredible at losing. Lost 5 of the last 6. Or 6 of the last 7 or whatever. There's pretty much 3 players I'd be sad if they transferred
Some sport psychologist team in 2077 is gonna look back on this past 10 years of Nebraska football and still not have answers for why.
Williams has NFL potential. He’s just light. He’s got the most raw pass rush potential at DE we’ve had since Randy Gregory, easily
Last year he came out of nowhere and made a huge impact in the win vs NW. This year huge game against Rutgers. Not sure his stats vs Colorado but he had that 5-Star LT in shambles. He might not make a big play every drive, and sure his role is specialized but at the very least teams have to pay attention to him.
Bet Knighton’s status being up in the air hasn’t helped at all. If he comes back things might turn back around some
Look, I'm not saying he's bad. But he sure AF ain't great 5 sacks this year, 4 against Purdue and Buttgers. 14 total tackles. I'd love to have him in the pass rusher rotation next year, but I wouldnt want him to be first string, cuz he's a liability on the edge if it's anything but 3rd and 11 He's another of those players who completely disappeared in our 5 game losing stretch
Williams had 3 sacks against Rutgers and 2 against NW last year, that leaves for every other game. Sorry but he’s not a huge loss from a production standpoint
I'm not freaking out or anything but if we're talking about likely replacements for these dudes, if history is any indication it won't be better. Losing major contributors from a good (not great) defense is, indeed, bad. No amount of cope makes that otherwise.
"Major contributer" against purdue and buttgers. You're blowing his production out of proportion. "A contributer" is more correct.
He had the most consistent pressure from any DE we've seen in a decade even if he didn't always get home. From a dude who is raw as fuck.
players that I'd be truly disappointed if they bounced would pretty much be Dylan, Barney, EJ, nelson, Shavers, McGahee, Ceyair and Hohl... there's maybe a few others on the periphery like K. Davis and some of the redshirts who seem promising but so much of the upperclass roster is just replacement level dudes IMO Williams is the most promising one to leave so far but let's see what the portal brings us
Yeah well Ross Dzuris was our DE for the last decade. We can replace him and be fine No way he was consistent. Completely disappeared vs any decent team. Potential? Sure, maybe
I'm saying that's essentially who we've had at DE since Gregory. So "best rusher since Gregory" is a pretty depressing measure. We can be done here. Sucks he's leaving.
Fair point in that any reasonably competent defensive guy sucks to lose because there have been so few over the last 10 years. But he’s not Kyle Vanden Bosch.
This. Everyone said millennials were the look at me generation. Gen z puts us to shame. wait a few weeks when these guys realize bama isn’t offering them a bag for their 1 pressure every third game then we will get tons of I’m back.gifs and sunglass emojis and fans will give them the adoration they need.
Williams is also good for at least one offsides per game, so there is more production to consider. When we say he’s “raw” what exactly does that mean? I’m sad he’s leaving but this is how the game works these days so I’m not going to lose sleep on it.
