Me neither. Which is cool. But unfortunately there is a large portion of our population that doesnt feel the same. When we get pulled over it’s a “let’s see if we can talk our way out Of a ticket” situation, when a POC in this country gets pulled over it’s a “I hope I’m alive after this confrontation” situation. That’s the issue.
Ok, so? hudson's always been weird but I just took it as him saying he doesn't get why some people think vandalism and looting is helpful in any way
It's a terrible way to approach what is happening right now and is telling. Would you have commented on this situation if the looting/arson wasn't happening?
it was either that or brutality and I didn't feel brutality correctly defined the lose of life situations. pretty much.
There’s a difference between understanding and condoning. Anger boiling over is understandable and sometimes it manifests itself in weird ways.
Oh I'm definitely not saying its all of them, but I would say I think it distracts from the overall goal of everyone else.
I’m talking about breaking glass and burning shit moreso than stealing. And not like I condone it but peaceful protest hasn’t really done anything either.
Question too uncomfortable? My apologies. The focus on property over people is very telling in this situation. There's a ton of people who wouldn't have commented on this situation without the property damage. Now, why do you think some might think this is the only way? I agree that it shouldn't happen, but at some point (unfortunately many points), enough is going to be enough. An ideal situation is no longer tenable. We're probably decades beyond the point of that.
So do you think that a little graffiti here, a little broken store window there is a step in the right direction that could eventually lead to less police brutality against the black community?
I'm just thinking about the video of people running into target and grabbing shit. Saw a really good video though on twitter today. This 45 year old guy and this 31 year old guy were yelling at eachother. And then the 31 year old guy pulls in a 16 year old kid and pleads with him that hopefully in 10 years when something like this happens again, hopefully they have thought of a new plan. Because what they have been doing and what they aren't doing now isn't working.
It's complicated vs. police brutally murdered a guy. Again...the fuck? How is "police complicated" accurate at all, especially compared to "police brutality"?
You miss the point. This is a pot boiling over after years of this. It’s not a solution. It’s a symptom.
Why are you getting hung up on what someone calls something? I'm not trying to minimize the situation.
Are you white? If so, don't be so hard on yourself, unless you think you've done something that is problematic to the cause you're speaking about.
This type of racial dialogue doesn’t occur in this thread often. My brothers and I never text about politics. There is no doubt that as our world hit the pause button to address COVID the real issues in our society have really come to light. I’m thankful for that and hopeful that something actually changes this time.
I haven't done enough to correct it. None of us has, otherwise this shit wouldn't still be happening.
It's ok. Do your part. Encourage others who need the encouragement to do their part and we can all get this ship going in the right direction!
I sure will. Patronize as much as you need to to make you feel better about caring so much about property. Hell, 160 years ago, last Monday's killing would have been a property issue as well.
Sorry to my fellow husks, because I love all of you like I do all humans. But forming a “those people” “those types” with regards to the protesters and the damage. That’s just wrong. I leave my house, I drive to work, I go past a speed trap, I never fear for my life. My biggest fear is if I will get caught and have to spend $80 on a ticket. I’ve never been handcuffed. I’ve never been detained. I’ve never been scared. I’ve never begged for my life. If I was A Black person i don’t think I could write that. That’s the issue. I don’t know what it’s like to live in this country with dark skin and I don’t try to trivialize it. FUCK property. The fire system in my office failed last January and everything was ruined. Guess what? We used insurance and we rebuilt and the fucking place looks the same. George Floyd’s family can’t say the same. Fuck off with the both sides bullshit. If you aren’t pissed the fuck off than you ARE the problem.
I’m in a rural area and I speak for everyone in that racism is alive and real. I’m doing my part out here in central ne to make it known that this bullshit suck but unfortunately TRUMP
I know where you are and I know how you feel. Can you subject change in your community? Doubtful. But acknowledging the issues we see and feel is the biggest step.
Same boat my friend. No matter what I do Missouri will vote for Trump (hate). This was the “Show Me” state until a dark skinned man was elected. Since then the good ol boys made sure only their white pride candidates get elected. McCaskill tried everything she could to keep that senate seat and lost it. Racist ass state electing racists ass politicians.
Took a while to understand for me at least but it’s always good to remember privilege mostly isn’t really what you get because of your skin. It’s what you don’t have to deal with and would never know if it wasn’t pointed out if you live in a mostly white state/community.
Glad my vote counts in Michigan in November. Unfortunately, I think Minnesota might be more up for grabs than Michigan at this point. The suburbs aren't gonna take kindly to their brunch being so disturbed. Definitely understand where you're coming from, oldberg. I think we all do, considering where most of us grew up. Stick to what you know is right and let the chips fall where they may. You never know where you might impact someone who goes on to make a real change in the world. Hell, you might just do it yourself.
Fucking riot squads and flash bangs going off blocks from my house. What are the “protesters” doing? Hands up, don’t shoot. Answered by mace, flash bangs, and tear gas.
This whole thing is a hot mess and an indictment on our society in general but one of the most astonishing things to me is the difference between the military style police encounters that are on video and the videos of cops showing a bit of empathy. I can’t fathom the thought process of whoever is giving the orders for aggressive dispersion of protestors but it’s exceptionally dumb
The wildest thing in the Cities has been the bipolar nature of it. Most likely due to the state taking things over from the city, but basically went from limited engagement/contain as best you can to arresting media members, shooting people on their porches, and indiscriminately pepper spraying people (ok, this has been around from the start).
5-0 is instigating the majority of the fracases out there because they think they're a paramilitary operation and we're insurgents that they need to keep under their thumb.
Maybe there shouldn't be bullshit institutions like the Fraternal Order of Police that shield members from accountability and encourage this sort of Pelini-esque culture Fraternal orders in general tend to encourage the exact opposite of accountability and integrity among members and should probably all be summarily dissolved.
