Had a serious discussion with my wife today about taking a leave of absence from work and coming back to MPLS to help in whatever ways we can. We’re both tore up over all this and feel powerless down here in Arizona.
I was out on Lake Street Friday and today. It's been awesome from the standpoint of the response from the community. I imagine you've seen some of the reports of the outpouring of help, but definitely can confirm. There's more people than cleanup work at this point, aside from the stuff that takes heavy equipment and professionals. The business owners are upset, but overwhelming majority we talked to along the way support the protests and understand the bigger picture. They've almost hit $2 million raised for the Lake Street Council and that number continues to grow (300k between 4 pm and 8 pm today). This seems to be the key org people are turning to to learn how to support and provide help where it is most needed: https://www.facebook.com/supportthecities/
Lived in S minneapolis for 13 years. Pleasant and 36th, 43rd and Lyndale, and a 5 year spell downtown. Have friends out cleaning up, buying tons of shit from Costco and dropping off at local food banks, and doing everything in their power to help out. Now Minneapolis has to get real about all facets of the widespread segregation of the city.
Yep, all will be for not if addressing the root cause of the issues does not occur. We did a sweep through Lake-34th between Blaisdell and Stevens today. Post office being burned out was a bummer, but otherwise, not too bad. 5th precinct had razor wire up for protection. It's pretty wild how quickly things transition in that part of town (all parts of town, really).
one of the U's residency clinics, I know. Yeah, there were no protests going on over there at all. This was done by some shitholes
There were some odd fires that were set in N MPLS along Broadway, I think. Pretty weird pattern and the local community is suspicious about it. Lake has shifted through the week, so there is damage all up and down it. We organized at 17th and Lake, so walked a ways to our area this morning, which gave a good view of everything between. Good amount of fires...fortunately, Midtown Exchange was spared, but the street businesses between there and the metro transit station were all destroyed. That was probably the worst singular area as far as total wipe out on a block (believe that happened Wednesday night). Thursday night was when the 3rd precinct was taken out, along with some of the commercial businesses around Lake and Hiawatha. The Wells Fargo, post office, and a few commercial business (including a check cashing business...darn) were taken out in that Blaisdell-Stevens area Friday night. The White Castle looked pretty beat up inside, but looked alright on the outside (they reported it was on fire on the news, but don't think it was, as it would have burnt down by the time they got to it.
My homegirl was on the bridge today when that fuckface drove the tanker through the crowd. Fucking madness.
Yeah, a friend of the friends I'm staying with here was on the bridge as well. There's a whole lot of explaining to do with that shit show, starting with how a fucking tanker is on an interstate that was closed for 40+ minutes.
The narrative that it's out-of-towners causing all the fires and destruction is bullshit, but it is not pro-reform protesters, certainly. MPLS definitely has deep-seated inequality issues as Randy pointed out. The saddest part is that the people doing the damage are likely succeeding in that their efforts to scapegoat protesters as rioters and looters will likely work. It's hard to envision meaningful reform, especially with Bob Kroll so entrenched at the fucking union as pink skirt said. I'm so sad to hear about the murder of the kid in Omaha. But I'm also glad that protests are happening in Nebraska and everywhere. The more peaceful protests there are, and the more unnecessarily violent police reactions there are, it should illustrate how widespread racism is, as well as the need for nationwide reform of police protocols. But today I'm seeing little hope.
Bullshit. Absolute madness that they do this. I don’t give a shit if his property was being damaged, he shot and killed an unarmed person.
I sincerely wish that it wouldn't have come down to taking a life for sure but from the article I read the gentleman who got shot had the shooter in a choke hold on the ground. Again, it would obviously be best not to have a gun involved but that is a different picture than simply some guy protecting his property. I haven't seen the videos they used for evidence yet so I'll be interested in seeing those too.
Nothing else going on in the world so rgrachek is here to ask the most important and very topical questions. https://nebraska.forums.rivals.com/threads/bill-callahan-what-if.267637/
There was a girl on NBCMiami who was arrested here during the protests. She was from Minneapolis and missed her flight back home bc of being arrested. Why would you fly here to protest when the spark started in her own town?
She didn’t say. But made it sound like the was here just for this and about to go home. I guess I see what you’re saying lol
That’s the only reason I could think of something like that happening. I guess more power to someone for protesting no matter what their personal travel plans were.
no but everyone's gonna trip over their dicks convincing themselves yet again that somehow the dem is worse.
lol that is amazing. What is he doing in Omaha and how did he become mayor? I thought Omaha and Lincoln were blue now?
K-pop fans are on Twitter using racist group hashtags and flooding k-pop music video posts so actual racist posts are thinned out completely. What a really weird time to be alive
Ive quit smoking, almost have quit dipping, drinking has intensified, about to propose, mine is also fucked
About to start dipping again tbh. My buddy put me on these zyn pouches. Nicotine only. Maybe the homie DirtBall can tell me if those are going to give me the big casino.
We got Bo Pelini level audio security in this meeting between the governor and other leaders in the state/city of Omaha. Weird times.
First y’all know y’all can use me as your ‘I’ve a got a black friend’ fair catch, so when y’all jamming that Kendrick song y’all ain’t got to bleep y’all self when he spit the n word. That being said Ive been out of this thread for a minute so missing the day to day, mainly cause well fuck social media and cause Huskin used to be the only thing that I could rely on to keep my cob up now all we have is mf’n bad news and shittty season after shitty season.
It’s safer than snus which is safer than dipping but still not safe. Nicotine is bad mmmkay. If you were going the other direction and currently dipping and wanted to do something safer go for it. But going opposite ain’t cool. You’ll end up like one of those kids that try pots once and immediately become addicted to heroin because of it.
I’ve made the switch to Zyn and it’s clutch for video games and driving. Next step is just regular gum.
Maybe I’m gay but I like the disgusting act of spitting into a bottle/cup. I’ve tried seeds but they fuck up my gums almost as much as dip, at least initially.
I get what you’re saying, but I’ve been looking extra long in the mirror while brushing my teeth and it’s a little frightening.
