Yeah not to take away from legit anger about game mgmt but 17 should've been enough to win. Infuriating to see Mordecai duck tacklers. Couldn't get off blocks all game. Defense took a step back at the wrong time. Good game, Chubba
Uhh have you watched our team? Any play we run is risky. Doesn’t matter how this game looked early. Our defense is a 4th down away from requiring a field goal to win. A tripping penalty that doesn’t get called also influences the game. It is what it is.
Purdy also had Wisconsin on their heels and the offense had momentum at the end of the game, have to capitalize. Instead we get the ball in OT with Wisconsin having all the momentum and couldn’t even gain a yard.
Think what sucks is the defense absolutely puts it all out there the offense does too, they’re just more limited in ability Our best receivers are freshmen EJ is a freshman chubba played his ass off the team by and large (special teams aside) came to play and battled and stuck it out in pressure situations but it just feels like they’re playing against their own coaching staff and against the refs
I guess sometimes it feels like people don’t acknowledge we have the chance to do what we’re doing because of this staff either. We’ve just come out of the shittiest head coaching stint in our history (or close to it) and immediately it’s splitting hairs or magnifying decisions on a micro level. Rhule and his coaches are not above criticism but I’ll take a different approach personally on how I evaluate them in year 1. Which, obv people don’t have to agree with. I think everyone is just tired of losing, period.
I’m simultaneously incredibly frustrated with how many wins we’ve straight up given away but also marveling at how many games we’ve won/been in with D2 quarterbacks and averageish talent, if not worse, at almost all spots. The dream is that the in game coaching approaches the development side because they’re nailing that on most fronts. And it can’t be overstated about the psychological hill they’re trying to climb with 80% of the contributors on this squad
We don’t have any players that are good enough to make winning plays at clutch times. Bo won 9 a year because he found dudes like Abdullah and Burkhead who literally won games on their own. David/Gregory being other examples of just players that can will a team over the hump. There isn’t a single player on this team like that. Makes you have to be pretty perfect.
I was happy w the FG at the end of regulation. I was waiting for a holding call or inexplicable turnover.
Well atleast Purdy looked like an actual QB. We’ll see how awful Iowa shuts us down but all in all 5-7 this year is a step forward and better than I expected.
We’ve been in these situations plenty over the last several years, and those coaches never figured out how to win those games. Can’t have coaches continuously fuck up golden opportunities with poor game management. Hopefully they get it figured out for next year.
We played our 3rd string QB w a shitty Oline. Playing true freshman at RB and WR. Our TE is a sophomore with the knees of a 50 year old. I won’t be happy if we finish 5-7, but it’s better than I expected going in. And I think the teams mental ability is improving.
Bro is rain man but also his chart on our final drives tied or down by less than 1 score is pure sicko impossible statistical shit
It’s probably Satterfields fault he’s had a recurring groin injury that’s been mentioned regularly since the Colorado game, that bastard
My theory is the coaches promised him or his parents he could use a red shirt this year due to the groin issues. He’ll legit be like a 23 year old RS Soph next year.
Rhule mentioned Purdy was good to go by the Northwestern game. Pry should read up before being a prick!
Pretty sure I saw purdy’s hand shaking in OT aka he wasn’t inspiring confidence. but also I don’t think our offense is good at any one thing. We occasionally have success doing different things but it makes it hard in crunch time because there isn’t much we can lean on.
Rhule said tonight Haardvark was “good to go” which seems in his lingo “can play if necessary” not so much fully healthy imo
The staff most certainly has us in a position to get our 6th win. This defense is probably dogshit without Tony White coaching them. It doesn’t mean they can’t also struggle when the game is on the line. Part of that is the talent on the field. Other part is some baffling coaching decisions. Minnesota just got done running for 50+ yards. defense gets a 3 and out. We pass 3 times, no time off the clock with 11 minutes in the game. That’s Scott Frost vs Illinois type shit. End of game vs Maryland. end of regulation vs Wisconsin that’s at least 3 opportunities where coaching decisions hurt the team late in games. Yes, the coaching also helped get them to that point but neither the coaches or the team could seal the deal. It’s year 1, it’s not like I’m calling for heads to roll but the criticism is warranted just as much as the praise that we still have an opportunity to make a bowl game next week.
Hurts even more that our November losses were against teams who were on a 6 game, 4 game, and 3 game losing streak before beating us.
Also it's not criticism it's acknowledging objective missteps at key moments by the staff. On pretty basic shit.
“Objective”, sure man. Explain how any of this is objective aside from, for example, telling our quarterback to kneel out the rest of the game when you’re down three.
I still have no clue how they missed that tripping call, except it was committed by the team with the W on their helmets.
I mean we’re trailing with 3 minutes. After 2nd down we let 40 seconds run off the clock After the next 1st down play we let 40 more run off. After a 7 yard run to the Wisky 19 we let 30 more run off. Then ultimately 20 more before calling timeout and running our 3rd and 2 play. nearly 2 minutes of just running clock when we trail. It doesn’t make sense.
honestly if we can find half a billion dollars to redo the south stadium, we need to start dropping bags so big that recruits can't ignore it. if they don't, there's not going to be any demand for a renovated stadium.
I think my biggest beef with the clock stuff is just in general it feels like they don’t really have a “feel” for what’s happening in the game sometimes. - If we score a TD vs Maryland we’re not technically “playing to win” because they still could have tied it. You’re at home, kick the FG get the crowd into it and put the pressure on Maryland to score. Instead you don’t, there’s minimal pressure for them to score because it’s either OT or they only need X yards for a FG. - Last night the offense is struggling after the first 2 drives. They finally show something and EJ is getting into a rhythm, but they don’t even try to ride the hot hand or score at all. So now you play for OT on the road vs a team that finally has momentum, with an offense that isn’t guaranteed to even hit a FG from where OT starts. - Last night when the O was still looking good they randomly run that toss, throw back play when I’m not sure we’d even ran a toss all game to set it up. Sets us back 15 yards. - Similarly, the rare times the offense is getting some momentum they go with some rogue clunky play call that just stops everything. - Unwillingness to let Johnson carry the load especially when he’s been solid in the 4th quarter the last few games. Which goes against Rhules “body blow organization” - Feels like they have no clue what the middle 8 is because even before half they struggle with the clock sometimes. Overall, I 100% understand the offense is limited and has minimal talent so that doesn’t help but it’s frustrating to see yet another staff fumble the clock/game management stuff. I think the Maryland ending got in Rhule’s head last night which I wouldn’t expect that to happen.
Yeah we're not doing great in managing games, but we've got a team of spare parts that's playing their asses off, and that is a huge credit to what the coaches are doing Sun-Fri. And a bunch of really promising young talent. I'm digesting another bad year, but I can chew it because of the plentiful signs of life that flat out did not exist last year. I have hope this staff will figure out managing tight games better once they get to know their team a little better. QB situation has been absolute chaos, so I'll grant a little consideration that its tough to know exactly how to manage tight games when you don't really know what you're working with. Tl;Dr I have hope. Gbr
Yeah there’s definite improvement and I get that managing the game is tough when you’re not sure if a basic handoff can be executed without a fumble, or what direction a pass will be thrown, etc. Just a little alarming because that’s stuff that can linger around, hopefully not but still. Plus just sucks to waste the final/easiest year of the west of all time.
Yeah Chubba was actually pretty fucking great last night. Might be I'm too used to watching dudes with zero QB ability or instincts, but he looked way better than I could have expected. And to not turn the ball over in your first start, on the road in Madison at night, with this team? Fantastic. If he plays like this vs Iowa I think we have a legit incumbent QB situation.
I think he has some basic QB skills/tools which is an upgrade in itself. Maybe finally getting a chance to play and play well will refocus him a little bit (assuming the party boy stuff is true). Still need to bring in 1-2 more guys in the off season but who knows what this dude could do with actual practice time.
Watching Rhule’s postgame presser. Lol at us seeing the best QB play all season and some clown still asking about HH playing.
We (“fans”) are going on the field if we win. I will bring a sawsall to get my piece of the goal poast.
The Bronze Sawsall would be a p apt trophy in our division. 6-7! And bring that reciprocating saw back to lincoln!
I watched Iowa play in like week 2, saw they looked absolutely terrible, then didn't think about them until yesterday. Not remotely surprised to see they're 9-2 and also still terrible
The worst thing about yesterday was that I was damn near euphoric after the Nebrasketball game but then I went to bed mad.
