dude is the anti-Jeselnik, seemingly stupid as fuck and can't craft or write a joke whatsoever. Just clinically unfunny.
Comedians who have relied on that primarily to get fame and not work on any real routines for years usually aren't very funny. I think we've seen crowdwork done more because all you're often doing is just making fun of people who are feeding you bits instead of having to come up with them on your own.
You see crowdwork all the time on social media because those jokes are one-offs and comedians don't have to burn part of their acts by posting it online.
First half of his special was fucking awful. Back half was pretty funny, but wasn’t enough to cover the first half.
I’m glad you all could ride my coattails on discovering that the new Matt Rife special sucks a bag of dicks
He's been a shitty comedian for a while and I think the crowd work stuff is overplayed at this point, kind of glad other people are figuring out that he's really not special.
His crowd work is slightly amusing but then you see a guy like Stavros do it way better it kind of diminishes his value. Also, there are guys like Sam Morrill who do great crowd work and actually have good material which makes him look even worse
Jeff Arcuri has great crowdwork on his instagram and he seems to be a pretty nice guy too. Haven't seen a lick of his stand up. He came to KC recently but I had to choose between him or Stavros.
I watch all the Arcuri crowd work clips that come through my Reddit feed. He’s done a great job marketing the last 12-18 months and seems like a pretty normal dude (which is appealing in the comedy space). Definitely going to see him if he ever comes through Atlanta.
Stav's stuff was funny at first but kind of wore off when he's just making fun of the same types of people over and over. Plus he betrayed my best friends Nick and Adam.
knowing Stavvy broke up with Rachel Sennott because he tried to open the relationship is hysterical though
It's quite possible fans of CumTown also harassed her, I think Nick went on the subreddit before it got banned and asked people to chill out.
its like the dane cook thing. i have no idea what people think makes him good but whatever. I will say Rife is funnier than Cook ever was.
I saw him six months ago in a 200 seat club. His explosion in ability to sell tickets is impressive as hell.
Saw Matteo Lane last night, had a good time. I was one of the few who clapped when he polled the audience for any straight men. Somebody booed (not at me, necessarily, but the concept of straight men I guess).
maybe they just didnt like liars lol lmao even Matteo is pretty great though. His bit about Montreal being a French speaking Cleveland kills me
Saw David Lucas last night, was pretty funny. He relies on roasting, but it's his thing. Seeing Sam Morril in Feb.
need to watch the new stavvy special also thought this was an interesting list, need to catch up on the ones i missed. https://www.vulture.com/article/best-stand-up-comedy-specials-2023.html
His viral marketing annoys me so I've refused to watch him to this point. Maybe one day I'll give in.
I will be watching gulmans new special instead of going out nye… we are nearly 50 and driving back from orange bowl pls respect my decision
He was paying YouTube to promote his stuff on people's feeds. Then he was gaming the Reddit system to get a ton of promotion over there too. I understand it, I just don't respect it
What is this purist take on marketing? Should he have exclusively posted up on the street corner with a spinning arrow to get people into a 20-seat venue in a dilapidated strip mall in rural Indiana? It’s damn near 2024, why would he not use standard marketing practices?
He has the right to do it, I'm not contesting that. I'm the person who Google's something and sees exactly what I need in the sponsored ad at the top but still scrolls down to click on the actual link because I don't want to give them the satisfaction of knowing their ad worked.
I hadn't heard or seen anything about that. I wonder if it was possibly related to the special he put out earlier this year
Ah shit, I just googled the reddit guy and that was someone else. It happened around the same time so I think I mentally linked them together. Asmus was definitely paying to promote his YouTube clips very aggressively though and it was obnoxious. My bad on that one.
I've been on a #blessed hot streak the last couple months seeing Oswalt, Mulaney and Bargatze (all of which were fantastic) with Todd Barry (speaking of talented crowd work) and Emily Catalano still to come. Stand up shows have basically replaced concerts for me at this point.
Love Todd Barry, only saw him do a Dr. Katz live show in Austin several years ago. Need to see him do a full set.
That bit in the one special where he's ragging on the guy(s?) and their band just destroyed me the first go round
Soder is hilarious. He taped a special in Portland at Helium which I went to, hope it comes out in a few months.
Saw him in Atlanta a few weeks ago and it was a good time - he was the reason I used to listen to the bonfire on satellite radio in the car the last few years. He’s also just a great podcast guest that can riff with everybody.
i don’t like pablo torre or even katie nolan too much, but they on his podcast were two funny fucking shows
