Everybody knows that is how you get the deals....
Is he a GoldBond or Pinaud man?
Settle down there, fella.
You forgot 'big man'
On my way
I have to ask is this an interview or just dudes being bros being dudes? Could get awkward if neither of you know which
I told him I was just a fan and wanted to pick his brain and talk football.
His second favorite wr behind Kerry Meier was ... ?
you guys should come to my bar
I'm always there in spirit, drinking your spirits
I was at KU during the early Mangino years and still watch KU football every Saturday now so I appreciate what he did more than most. I also known his temper to those that worked for / with him plus an 8 game losing streak after being ranked 15th is equal to blame for his firing than just being mean to the players.
You can be an asshole to the players, staff and administration if you win....lot harder to keep your job when you lose. Especially with his god awful play calling in his last game which was a loss to Missouri.
I knew it, Mangino ate his ass.
I'll have a full report when I get home.
He's an awesome dude and had a lot of awesome stories.
Mark mangino never lost 8 games after 2003
You look like Craig Kilborn.
What did you guys have, one beer?
Which one is you boom roasted
wow that's a good looking man and you arent half bad yourself ha ha
Was he disappointed to find out you aren't the real DrTomOsbourne?
I know I am
7, my mistake. The games in reference if you want to review: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2009_Kansas_Jayhawks_football_team
Though I will admit Reesing having a bad hammy was equal to blame for that streak. However, that team still had multiple NFL players at WR, corner and safety plus Reesing. Lots of bad breaks.
Really curious to hear what stories come out after this as the Mangino firing is still debated on a regular basis at KU message boards.
I don't know what there is to debate besides the fact that it was terrible
The hires we made afterwards were terrible which makes the firing look less justified. You also have to remember the offseason turmoil that year as Mangino, Leach and the coach at South Florida (or Central?) were all fired for the same reason.
You can argue the Leach firing was dumber decision for Texas Tech than KU's of Mangino. Recruiting was poor, there was talks of mass transfers and assistants leaving, he didn't get along with administration plus all the media drama for him telling players that he was going to send them back to the ghetto with a 40 in a brown bag.
My point is though - if he beats Missouri in that final game, he would have kept his job for the next season.
I think both the mangino firing and the leach firing were terrible. Mangino worse because you've got to realize who you are and what he's done. Texas football egos are a little bigger
Man Kansas and Missouri both being on the top five iirc feels like it was a hundred years ago.
You both stand alike, OP.
That's the story from his OU days
This is fucking awesome.
That guy was one of the assistants... He says he didn't pick up those towels
He should have been fired. That being said, we shouldn't have hired Gill or Coach Front- Butt.
The lady is hungry so I'm gonna cook before typing everything out.
Bitch please, you just posted some random ass pic of FUPA with a fan didn't you?
Order a pizza. Type type type
Did he send you back to the hood to get shot with your homies?
Alright here goes, no apologies for spelling errors typing this on phone.
Went to the place and obviously noticed him quickly but he's lost a noticeable amount of weight. Very friendly guy and the convo started like we'd been friends for years. Could see how he could recruit real easily.
Things are a little jumbled but here's what I remember.
He has a lot of memories of playing against Skers. In the 2000 game Solich and Bohl changed our entire defensive scheme which helped us get a 14-0 lead but they quickly deciphered it and won easily.
One of his only regrets at OU was setting up that reverse pass to White against NU when White fell down. He had a freshman throw the (bad) pass. After the game when the skers beat them using the same play Stools came up and told him "they really fucked us in the ass with that play huh?" Also remembers White blowing out his knee in non contact that game.
Loved coaching under Stools at #Oklahoma Sooners , Bob was very supportive of him going to Kansas. Mark told Kansas no many times and even had the SID put out a release saying he was removing his name from the job search but it just made Kansas want him more. They flew down for an interview and he went but was a jerk and didn't take it seriously but they still offered him the job two days later with promises they didn't back up like an "unlimited" recruiting budget and private planes.
Loved Kansas and still does. Felt the new AD had an agenda and was waiting for an opening to let him go.
Found Talib under radar, only had offers from KU and KSU. Knew they had a steal right away and felt he was underrated because he played so many positions. Still contacts Talib weekly to keep him on track.
Handled the two QB situation which was tough. Said that Reesing took the second string thing amazingly well. It took one day to realize they needed to play him at WR to get him on field. Said that the team saw Reesing do the position switch like a champ and it brought the whole team together.
Could tell that first quarter of that missouri game eats at him. Unreal he had KANSAS that close to playing for a national title. He got a couple offers after that but none worth going for obviously.
His worst day at Kansas was the day Ron Prince was fired at #Kansas State Wildcats . Heard they were hiring Snyder back and knew he would have to earn that win again.
Said all old Big12 coaches were good friends outside of Ron Prince. Will be calling Gundy this week to get on him about the mullet.
Feels that Jim Harbaugh lives solely to piss off Urban.
Is s big fan of Urban but doesn't think he lasts long because he's starting to show his compulsive and obsessive behaviors. He went to one day of fall camp this year or last and Urban wouldn't let him leave until he wrote a four page report on the whole day from interactions to staff including secretaries to the physical layout of the building.
Thinks Herman will have rough time st Texas when he learns he can't get away with things there he did at Houston.
Asked him what he thought about Bill Snyder still wearing his Alamo Bowl windbreaker. Said that's nothing.. Bill wears the same jacket at practice that he has for 20 years despite all the patches falling off.
Josh Freeman and his dad committed to KU shortly before publicly announcing for Nebraska. Felt that if Callahan had a good defensive coordinator and therefore hung onto Freeman and Gabbert, he would still be at Nebraska and winning big.
Mangino went in to an in home visit with little known wide receiver Frantz Hardy's parents in Miami and had a great visit, fully thinking Hardy was going to KU. Got in car and was told by his staff Hardy committed to Nebraska. The next year Hardy toasted KU for like 200 yards and three TDs in an OT win. Mangino felt that win at Nebraska would have catapulted them much faster.
One year Suh had like 15 tackles against KU. The next year he told his team Suh wasn't going to win any heisman in their stadium. Devoted whole game to stopping Suh using plays he had from 10+ years ago and he finished with like one or two tackles. Suh was so msd/frustrated he wouldn't shake hands after game.
Has no regrets outside of Iowa State... still gets offers every year but has never felt that any of them were the right fit and is enjoying life as it is now.
Talked some baseball and pro football.
There's some more but some felt like he didn't really want it shared and I respect that.
Picked up the tab for my beers and wings.
Was a really cool guy. Never got the vibe he was an asshole or jerk. Told him we should watch some spring training games and he seemed cool with that so we will see.
Thought you were already sleeping with half the trumpacolypse thread but if you're willing...I'm able.
And his friend is okay?
Yes. T-Boned by some girl on her phone but is fine.
DrTomOsbourne I feel like since you obviously hit it off well that your long game should be towel shitting questions. Watch those spring games like you mentioned and then maybe the third or fourth time you get him a little buzzed and casually bring up how nice it is to take a huge dump.
In all seriousness though, pretty badass he's a cool enough guy to have beers with you like that.
That's pretty rad
Love picking coaches minds
That's pretty awesome to hear. Also, just to come hang out with a random guy and have some beers and talk football has to make you more of a good guy>>>asshole.
Think when people call him an asshole he probably is more of the old school/like your gramps assholes. Big difference between a true asshole and a 'get off my lawn' asshole.
I love your contribution, but this guy make it seems like a fucking retarded fat guy can be a successful coach in the NCAA..
Not a great look...but regardless, he was pretty good
