Just a thought - We've talked about this before. Any interest in doing a 2nd place poll for February Book Club? Take the 2nd place books from the past several votes and use that to read from? Thoughts?
I mentioned a while ago maybe carrying over the 2nd place book to the next month and I still think that's a good idea but I don't want to have all the options be books we've previously passed over. Also if you suggested one a few months ago that got passed over and want to suggest it again I think that would be fine too. Just my thoughts, ill be fine with whatever we do
Fellow Book Club Nerds: I have had three submissions so far for February. Two of them are from the same author. A prominent, contemporary writer... it's scary how well known he is... a real King among writers (it's Stephen King). It has not been broached yet, but do you guys want the same writer nominated twice in the same poll? Also, someone submitted a book of short stories. Is this something we would be willing to accept, or do we just want novels and / or non-fiction single subject books?
Yes to multiple from the same author as long as they are nominated by separate users Yes to a collection of short stories (if people don't want to read it they won't vote for it)
There's one I've been really wanting to submit for ages now, but haven't, because the audio version got terrible reviews. Spoiler
New poll is LIVE! http://the-mainboard.com/index.php?threads/tmb-book-club-poll-for-february-2013.119465/
Anyone know any books like Into the Wild? My friend asked me... Basically a solid book where someone is like "You know what? Fuck it. I'm going to sell all my things and [start over, live the simple life, travel]"?
We can start it back up. Let's make it really informal. First person to make a thread that says, "August 2015 TMB Book Club Book is <insert book>". I'll pin it and we'll go from there.
One more thing: Let's wait until the last week of the month to nominate. Don't want four new threads labeled, "Sept Book Club", " Oct Book Club", "Nov Book Club", "Dec Book Club" all in July. Or at least until it becomes apparent we've finished with the old month.
My buddy wrote me asking about Infinite Jest by David Foster yesterday. He said this about it when I asked "Apparently it is a brutally difficult book to read (1,000 pages) but it is the American novel of the nineties" Curious if anyone has read it?
I admire your take charge attitude. Hopefully it will work out better for you in September than it did me in August. Although I'm still enjoying Seveneves. Looks like Arkie Proud has decided to skip August. typical.
Not for this month so we avoid back to back sci-fi but I thought numerous people would enjoy this book some month. Three-Body Problem http://www.amazon.com/The-Three-Body-Problem-Cixin-Liu/dp/0765377063 Apparently it was immensely popular in China and finally translated to english
Also I read Gin Buckets post as he was saying that Cartel would be the book of the month for September. I thought we were just going to let someone take charge and name the book of the month. Going back and reading I realize that I was mistaken. Forget the comment about your take charge attitude.
Yes sir-ee http://www.nytimes.com/2015/06/19/b...y-don-winslow-continues-a-drug-saga.html?_r=0 https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/23602561-the-cartel?ac=1
Oh man. Even though it can be a stand alone, I dont think my OCD will allow me to read a part 2 before part 1
Well, I just can't wait for this now: I just can't do it anymore. I am 46% through this 880 page monstrosity, and I just cannot read another page. I thought I would give it one more shot tonight, but after reading for 45 minutes and literally having no idea what I just read I think it is time to throw in the towel... .... But, my god, the unnecessary details. The mind-numbing descriptions. The inability to actually get to know any of the characters because he described the inanimate objects in minute detail.
I can't really defend it. It had over a 4* rating and sounded very good. No one could have known it would get bogged down in the details. There really is no one to blame.
My friend calls this (referring to the 4*+ rating) the "Infinite Jest syndrome" where you read something, and want to be proud of yourself for reading it that you give it a higher score than it deserves. Max it'll get from me is 2*s at this point.
Confirmed by the man himself. Spoiler Yeah yeah, not a whole lot of people check out this thread, so whatever.
I find myself doing this, then thinking, no way was this book as good as X which I gave the same rating to. Basically my ratings? 1 if I cant even finish 2 finished by but thought it was a waste of time 3 thought it was just ok 4 very good book that Id recommend 5 Best of the best :duh:
LMFAO I just read that review on Goodreads. I'm trying to motivate myself to keep reading this thing. That review didn't help.
