A chick (who I respect) just told me that all of the characters are miserable and pathetic women? How can a book club full of guys pick this book? What's next, Water for Elephants? Cripes.

I don't care THAAAAT much, because I've already read both of those books. However, I can't recommend them enough. Winslow is definitely a current top 3 author for me, so going for his best work is recommended.

Anyway, that same girl who hated Girl on the Train suggested yesterday that I/we read...

The Secret History by Donna Tartt (Same girl didn't really like Goldfinch fwiw)
    https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/29044.The_Secret_History

or if we were feeling some YA action,

    Brutal Youth by Anthony Breznican

I know - I was just busting your balls.

Save those for December imo. I just picked two off the NYT list. FWIW - I stayed up until 2 last night reading Saturn Run. Couldnt put it down. If youre between books - read it.

Why not just make Saturn Run the book for November then? My in between books are currently finishing up the Dresden series. Easy and entertaining.

I actually read through yesterday's posts right after I typed that. Fair enough.

    Her quotes...

"It made me angry. Not good."

"You'll like the first third. Maybe more, or maybe not even that because all the characters are miserable and pathetic."

"But then there's a moment where you think it'll be good and interesting in its conclusion, but it's not because you figure it out and it's disappointing. And then you're mad again that it's a book full of miserable and pathetic women."

If this book sucks I move that we have a 12 month moratorium on female authors.

How about the strife of women plots, or female driven plots moratorium?

Gone Girl was fine as well. The book this month I think is about 3 women, all are terrible. (According to my friend)

I hope Girl on the Train is good, because I just finished Saturn Run and it was awesome.

Once again, I liked Girl on the Train. It gets compared to Gone Girl and I can see it in some ways, not see it in others. And while the women might be awful in a ton of ways, I felt like that made for an interesting read. Plus it's a quick book.

how early ahead are we suggesting books for the month? obviously already have one for november, just wondering (if the timing works out) when I should suggest a book for december? or has that already happened?

just an fyi, the book i'm suggesting is A Little Life. finalist for national book foundation book of the year. full disclosure, it's by a woman and that seems to be frowned upon by some people here.

i've got a couple books i'm gonna read first (october book of the month being one of them, already read girl on a train) just trying to figure out if i should hold out reading till it's a possible book of the month or if i should just get going at some point in november (or late october)

edit: books prob too depressing (based on reviews) for the holidays, but i guess the question still stands. are we suggesting books a week in advance? a month in advance?

I gave Girl on the Train a 7.5. By comparison Uprooted was a 7.0. It is not Gone Girl and was hyped by the publisher as the next Gone Girl so people would read it.

I propose "Off to Be the Wizard" for December.

Have not read it yet, but reviews are good.

Synopsis from reviews I've seen: Guy finds out that the world is really just a giant computer program like the Matrix, and hacks the code to go back in time to the Dark Ages to use his modern knowledge to be a wizard. But when he does, he finds out he's not the first to have this idea....

It's only 370 pages and apparently it's funny and a great, light hearted read.

I recommended it so blame definitely lies with me. And I really like it a lot. But it's daunting sometimes. Especially in football season, I feel like I lose three or four days a week that I would normally read.

What are our December options? I just started the last book of the Legend trilogy and should be done in time for whatever we pick.

Who's the author? Goodreads gives me The Wizard of Id and Sabrina the Teenage Witch books.

EDIT: Nevermind, I'm dumb and typed "Off to See the Wizard." Scott Meyer, it seems, is the author.

I can get both of those. I say pick one of them for the book club. I'll read the other one anyway.

Im pretty much caught up on everything I want to read. Finally getting to Dark Places. Then first two books in the Red Rising Series. Hopefully can knock those out by year's end

We making this the general discussion thread too? Might as well.

Half way through Red Rising. Im loving it. After the first few chapters I thought it was going to be pretty bad. It shamelessly stole a lot of plot devices and structure from Hunger Games, but once you get past the initial lay of the land, it goes it's own path and is awesome. It incorporates a lot of Roman history and culture.

And I'll read the shit out of that book.

Edit: My current book is All the Lights You Can Not See, because this chick I know claims it was her favorite book.
