I remember them talking about how they always have to spread gravel on top for the walkway. I don't know what the actual wall is though.
Just wondering what there is to stop wildlings/white walkers/whatever the fuck else is beyond the wall from just going to either end and swimming/taking a boat to the other side. Unless there is some other kind of obstruction or they have extra men guarding the sea, what would be stopping them from just taking a little cruise over to the other side?
They do. The Eastwatch tower on the Eastern shore has a small navy but the wildlings do get around the wall on occassion and some climb the wall at times as well but never enough at one time to cause too many issues. But still that's why the land just south of the wall is mostly uninhabited
The walkers are actually not capable of crossing it. I remember reading that the Wall is more than just ice and stone, there is some kind of magic in it too that keeps the Others from crossing it. So to invade Westeros they would need the Wall to fall..
Brandon the builder used magic to raise it in the beginning. Generations of ice, etc have added to it's height. Wilders do get around/over/across it on occassion but when Brand the builder made it, there was some kind of spell wove into to stop the others, etc from crossing.
Same here. I mean with all the foreshadowing of the Others/etc, to not have the wall fall so they can come south, wreck shit and the kingdoms unite to drive them back would just fucking suck.
i think the wall will fall sometime too. just makes too much sense. Spoiler though i think one of the things im most excited about is bran's story in book 5 with all the crazy shit with cold hands
Feel like it'll be something like only dragon fire can kill the others or weapons forged in dragon fire so they'll need Dany and her dragons so she'll either take or demand the Iron Throne in return
