Cary Fukunaga Making Stephen King's Clown Horror 'It' as Two Films

It and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1? This may actually be very good news. THR's Heat Vision is reporting news that Warner Bros has hired filmmaker-on-the-rise Cary Fukunaga, of Sin Nombre and Jane Eyre, to direct their new adaptation of Stephen King's It, about the clown Pennywise. But the best part of the news is that apparently Fukunaga will be developing the adaptation of King's novel into two films, working with Roy Lee and Dan Lin to produce. We've been hearing about this new "remake", or re-adaptation, for quite a while, but this is the first major development news in a few years. And I like where they're headed. Read on!
The original Stephen King novel is very long, and many have criticized that even the TV mini-series in 1990 left out a lot of material. It sounds like this is Warner Bros, Fukunaga and the production realizing the best course of action will be to take it into two films. Which is a very bold and somewhat risky move, but if they keep this up, it may pay off for them. Fukunaga will co-write the script with Chase Palmer, of Neo-Noir and the unproduced Dune. Roy Lee & Dan Lin are producing It, as are Seth Grahame-Smith & David Katzenberg of KatzSmith Production. No specific details are mentioned regarding the two-film split, but the way it reads it sounds like one may be focused on the children, the other one as they're adults when Pennywise returns.
This new It adaptation is still a Warner Bros production, and THR even said: "Warners picked up the rights in 2009 and originally intended to adapt it into a single movie." Glad to see that enough pressure has been put on them to make sure it's adapted the right way, and it sounds like that will be with two movies at least. A previous screenwriter claimed in 2009 that this project "will be R" - let's hope that stays true, too. We'll keep an eye on this and let you know when we hear any updates. Do two films seem like a good idea?

I would like to see it done again. I'm a fan of the mini-series though. The fact that King got to do the screen play shows the corners that have to be cut though to make it work on film.

would probably work well as an hbo series. and i know hbo has been trying to do it for years.

the last few books became so strange and hard to follow that it started boring the fuck out of me so i dont really hold much hope for the rest of america. the first 4 or 5 books would probably work really well though.

As a true Dark Tower constant reader, I almost hope it never happens on the big screen. There are so many intricacies interwoven into the story that the average movie-goer would be hopelessly lost.

Plus, the entire series only takes about 10-11 months of linear time. It took King 30+ years to pen the series. They could get away with an 8-movie epic if all the characters were adults, but with Jake as one of the main ones, there's no way it'd work.

In a perfect world, HBO series. In a more realistic world, probably AMC.

Cary Fukunaga Out as Director of Stephen King’s ‘It’ at New Line (Exclusive)

Cary Fukunaga is out as the director of New Line’s two-part adaptation of Stephen King‘s “It,” which will not move forward as planned this summer and has been pushed indefinitely, multiple individuals familiar with the situation have told TheWrap.

Insiders tell TheWrap that “True Detective” director Fukunaga repeatedly clashed with the studio and did not want to compromise his artistic vision in the wake of budget cuts that were recently demanded by New Line, which greenlit the first film at $30 million. The situation came to a head over Memorial Day weekend, leading to Fukunaga’s abrupt exit from the ambitious project.

“It” was originally set up at Warner Bros. before moving to New Line in recent weeks, which was one reason behind the unfortunate split. Shooting locations were another issue at the heart of the departure, with Fukunaga expressing a strong desire to film in New York, which is more expensive than other locales. Another source indicated that New Line was getting cold feet about the project in the wake of the less-than-stellar opening of “Poltergeist,” which featured a clown in its marketing materials.

Aside from early scenes with Stan, why would he insist they shoot in New York? I don't know what sort of film breaks Maine or other New England states are offering, but you can find Derry, ME in film friendly states like Michigan or Oregon without much scouting, and $30M would go a lot further.
