Do you play music? What do you play? How long have you been doing it? Why did you start playing what you did? How'd you learn? Are you any good?

I'm learning how to play my first instrument and finally at the point where I can play some songs. It's pretty amazing and I'm kind of addicted to it.

Cool story, yes. Now tell me yours.

I started playing guitar when I was 13 because music is rad. I got good enough to give beginner lessons in HS and college then plateaued after college. I don't play much anymore. :idk:

I'm a drum guy and I've always played along to songs with my hands or by making noises with my mouth. Got an electronic kit a few years ago that I've messed around with a bit. Don't really do any kind of drills for the most part, I usually just put my ipod on with some ear buds and drum along with headphones connected to the kit. I can keep up with basic stuff.

I also dabble in making instrumentals with a midi keyboard. I'd intended to make arrangements that I could go back and record drums to, but I've never gotten anything to hook the drums up with my laptop, so basically I just have a few things with no percussion made.

I worked a ton of overtime right out of college so I didn't have much free time at all. I also listened to a lot less challenging music so I didn't really have anything to aspire to. I also haven't lived near my friends that I used to play with a lot. I might go back and get some lessons someday.

I play acoustic guitar. I haven't been playing much the last year or so. And it shows. Girl I'm seeing thinks I'm good and I just laugh. I'm awful right now. Would like to get back to playing daily. Start writing songs and performing locally in the future.

I was down to a banjo or a mandolin. Went with the latter. Totally arbitrary except that I assumed a smaller neck and fretboard would be easier with smaller hands. Wrong wrong wrong wrong.

I've been rediscovering drums over the past several months having been away from it for the better part of the past 7-8 years. Had lessons when I was a teenager. My challenge right now is that I don't have a decent living situation for having the kit setup. I'm in that "asking myself how seriously I want to take it" mode right now.

    3. 25 years or so
    4. Started on guitar. Reason - Girls, Girls, Girls which transitioned into Cash, cash, cash post 25
    5. Real good friend was sort of a musical savant, taught me. Guy can play most any instrument from brass to strings. Saw him pick up a dulcimer in a store once and was playing tunes within a few minutes.
    6. I'd say above average intermediate. Played clubs for years in many different genres of bands and had to play some hard, hard tunes, but there are still things out there that are beyond my abilities. When I was younger I though with enough practice....ya, some things have requirements that I don't have like 9" fingers.

I play bass, drums and skin flute. Used to be in a few bands ranging from death metal to post punk. Got tired of dealing with whiny bitch-ass dudes.
Started with Piano at like age 6 though I can't read music anymore nor play. So 30 years total. With wife and job and kids now it's impossible to devote anytime to a band, but I still do play the bass. Basically rock along to bands I like/respect.

Playing an instrument is great you just gotta find the one you like. I was always into bass driven music so I'm big fans of Entwhistle, Lemmy, Claypool, Jaco. Plus playing an instrument I think makes you open to a lot more different types of music. I've noticed a lot of people think they are diverse when it comes to music but they are not. Musicians however typically listen to a lot of shit. And usually a lot of weird shit. Or shit you wouldn't think they listen to.

Anyway, good luck on whatever it is you're playing. My advice is to just have fun and try to have it in our hands whenever you can. Lessons can help but you can also teach yourself a lot and develop your own style. But you can pick up bad habits. I have a lot of them.

Mandolin is pretty unique. It's not annoying, it's different and when ever I hear it in a song I really dig how they use it. Same kind of goes with Banjo but Banjo can get a little annoying.

Started guitar in middle school with some lessons, played it throughout HS and college, leading some FCA events and such.

In college taught myself bass as my friend had one he wasn't using, local youth group needed a bass player and I said I would. Was a blast as I was friends with the band, and our Sunday 'practices' turned into just playing around a lot with current songs and finally getting the feel of learning to play with a band. Loved having a great drummer and really made me a lot better at bass. Haven't played it much since. Will play with some music on, but it's not something you can pick up and play.

Getting back to my guitar more lately, will pull it out for the wife some but I'm just a lot worse than I used to be which is frustrating, need to just keep bringing it out more.

Latest development is picking up the ukulele I got in college. It's pretty fun but hard to memorize an entire new chord chart. Printed off the chart and been playing it lately. Since it's so small its fun to just grab and get in front of the computer on some tab sites and see whats fun to play.

Played guitar since I was 16. I also played bass in some garage bands back in hs and early college. I only have my acoustic now and I never play it anymore. I get bored with it but I can't break down and justify buying a new electric and amp if I'm just going to get bored with it too.

started drumming when i was ~8 or so, and was always in lessons until around 14. mostly learned how to play the basics/rudiments until i was coherent enough on the whole kit and then basically studied jazz until i was in college, since my teacher was in the kansas city jazz foundation.

also played snare and tenors in drumline in high school, and then bass in the college line.

i still play every time i go to my parents house and it's the main driving force behind me saving for a house so i can play every day again. i miss it so much.

Played piano from 6-13, never took it seriously but still remember how to play some songs like pink panther, Star Wars, and some parts of other show tunes.

Started guitar at 15 and played pretty regularly in a band or on my own doing open mic nights till about 26. Am now 30 and have barely touched my guitar for the last few years.

I miss playing whenever I think about it, but I'm generally too busy with the kids to put time into it. Now that my daughter is getting older, I want to start playing more again in hopes of getting her (and eventually my son) interested in playing something.

I started playing percussion when I was about 10. I marched drum and bugle corps for about 10 years and was in the orchestra and multiple small ensembles in college.

I've thought about getting back into it because I really enjoyed it, but between being a dad, an athlete, and hunting and fishing, I don't have any time to spare. The best I can hope for now is to pass my love and understanding of music onto my kids.

I started playing drums when I was around 9. I always had good rhythm, and my parents noticed it when I was 2 years old and I'd stand in front of the TV and rock side to side to the beat of whatever song was on. That said, they always encouraged me with my musical endeavors.
My dad bought me a used drum set from some dude in town when I was 9, and set it up in our basement. He paid $300 for it at the time, but turns out, it's a vintage Slingerland kit that I've been told is worth a few thousand. I still have it, no plans to get rid of it.

I never really had any lessons outside of the school band. Everything I know on the kit is stuff I taught myself just from listening and watching other drummers.

In high school some friends and I started a metal band called Lockdown. We were terrible, but we thought we were cool. There's really not a live music scene for teenagers in rural western Ohio, so we mostly played parties and battle of the bands.
We paid some older pot head dude $300 to record us. Here's an example... a contradictory song entitled "Hardwood for the Metal Man"
    https://www.reverbnation.com/craigwalkup/song/23329696-lockdown-hardwood-for-metal-man

Like I said, we were terrible. But we definitely sounded better live!

In college I met new friends and started another band called "Starter George". We started doing covers, Dave Matthews, Neil Young, Phish, stuff like that. Way more mellow than my high school metal days. We eventually wrote around 10 songs, and recorded a demo. I should find that demo and upload them.
We played around Columbus for 2 years or so, when our singer got his girlfriend knocked up and moved back home. We had a girl that played a lot of shows with us just by herself with an acoustic guitar... she had become pretty good friends with us, so we asked her to join the band. She was pretty hot, could play guitar, and was an excellent singer. We changed our name to "A Modest Proposal", started writing songs, and playing shows around Columbus. This was my most successful original venture, by far. We had a pretty big following going, when Kate graduated from OSU and decided she wanted to pursue being a singer/songwriter in NYC. She tried to get us all to go with her, but none of us wanted to take the risk. And that was the end of that. She lived in NYC for a few years, and played in some decent bands. But now she lives in LA, works as a nurse, and plays in a few groups in the evenings.
I have some live tracks from "A Modest Proposal" uploaded if anyone wants to listen.

These days I play in a rock cover band with some dudes from back home. We play cheesy shit, but it's fun, and makes more side money than any Original bands of mine did. This is more just for fun, as we all have real jobs, families etc.
