Our eligibility requirement was actually quite embarrassing. We had block scheduling so you only took 4 classes/semester. The rule was that you had to be passing 3/4 classes. If you took study hall you weren't allowed to fail anything.

I know they changed it after I graduated but not sure what it is. I'd imagine it's a 2.0 or something

    Senior corps.

I tried out for Scouts in '96 (probably their best show ever), but they said they had too many age-outs in their bass line and couldn't afford to have a rook-out in their bass line.

Buddy of mine was working with the line for the Colts and told me I had a spot there if I wanted it, but it was Scouts or bust for me, so I declined. Coulda', woulda', shoulda'.

I've had multiple friends march Scouts. One of them went on to Bluecoats. I never marched, but I've had a lot of friends participate. Spread out all over between the Cavaliers, Cadets, SCV, Crown (when they won), Bloo, Madison, Colts, Troop, and others.

I'm in Minnesota, so most of the people I know either marched Scouts, Cavies, Phantom, or Colts because they're the closest.

I haven't kept up with it, but I guess DCI today is nothing like it was in the mid to late 90s. I guess they allow electronic sounds and shit, which is just wrong. All you need to put on a good show is brass, percussion, and some prancing fruitcakes with flags.

I think it's because there are only like 2 people in active bands on this board. Kinda surprising for a board this size, and especially since there seem to be a lot of music fans.

An acoustic 12-string. Play almost exclusively in open-C. I thought with practice I could one day pass for a poor man's John butler when I started imitating him 10 years ago.. Ya, that hasn't happened.. I do have moments of unselfconsciousness where things come together a bit. Currently taking bookings for campfires & drum circles

This is pretty much me. I really want to start playing again though.

I feel like when you were 16 and becoming a rock star was still a real possibility it was a lot easier to be motivated to learn.

I have a metric fuckton of garageband files where I'm just fucking around. I don't think they're all that bad, but I've only written a few songs that are anything more than me just putting together some beats.

I started a band when I was 16 with some of my friends. My dad was very strict and I think he thought we were playing in my buddy's garage. We were at it about six months and one of his buddies says "I saw the write up about your boy's band in the paper. Are you going to their show Friday night?"

At least five hundred people show up (because it was free and pretty much unregulated, and a popular venue). So my dad decides to see what I'm up to and arrives 30 minutes into our first set. People are smoking weed out in the open, all my friends are drunk as shit. It is just a total shit show. Needless to say, that ended my career as a professional musician.

At one point, I could play any brass instrument I had ever picked up, but decided to "play" football instead of staying in the band. By playing, I mean that I practiced and did not actually play very much.

I currently play piano, but I don't get to play like I would like to. I have a keyboard and it is not nearly as much fun to play as an actual piano. A few years ago I bought a drum set and I really like playing, but I can't find equipment to allow me to hear the music as well as what I am playing. My dog despises them.

Like Iron Mickey , I have been wanting to buy a stringed instrument. I have never been able to pick up guitar and having small hands has made that more difficult. I looked at buying a guitar with nylon strings or a mandolin or banjo. I haven't made a purchase yet. Any advice on stringed instruments to purchase or sound equipment to help with actually hearing what I play on the drums would be appreciated.

Yo the mandolin is not forgiving. My fingers looked like ground beef until the calluses came and it's still hard to get proper pressure on those string pairs. It's a question of whether you want more tension in the pressing (mando) or stretching (banjo).

If your hands are used to stretching for piano, I'd say you're safer with the jo.

    I sing, does that count?

I come from a family of talented artists/musicians on both sides. I always played sports and gave up on piano after two years cuz it wasn't as fun as playing outside.

I grew up singing all kinds of songs from opera to classic rock with my siblings. I also went to an acapella church until I was 19.

I never really thought much of it til my cousin heard me singing RHCP and was like dude you got some pipes.

It's something I would always puss out on if someone put me on the spot. I never had the stones to to karaoke or sing in front of people. Which is odd cuz I'm outgoing and gives sales presentations to complete strangers.

Anyway I finally got over my fear when an ex paid a guy who was the MC for karaoke and made me sing a 3 doors down song (it was one of her favs). The locals at the bar thought I was a singer in a band which made me feel good.

I still get nervous but after the first song, I'm hooked.

My wife finally got me voice lessons for Xmas and I have my first lesson in two weeks.

Last week I was about to check out of my hotel and was singing Randy Travis Forever and Ever song. The cleaning ladies told me I should be on American Idol and had been listening to me for the better of 5 minutes.

Tl;Dr I can barely play the piano but can sing.

I have about 7 songs with the instrumental parts done and exactly 3 verses and 2 choruses total... they've been in limbo since 2001. Even had a couple of guys in college try to write the words to a couple of them and it just wasn't what I wanted I guess.

learned the main lick for Come as you Are in 1992 and got my first guitar a few months later right before my 9th birthday. played a shit load in middle school - bush, STP, pearljam, alice in chains, metallica. "Wasn't cool to play guitar" in 9th-10th grade. Got a new acoustic Jr. year and dove back in head first but this time classic rock / southern rock / jam band. and a fuck load of DMB. and John Meyer. hate all you want but if you're solely playing rhythm and singing - Dave Matthews and John Meyer's styles are a lot more fun than just playing chords over and over.

5 piece band freshman year in college. Cut down to 2 acoustics + conga/bonga guy for the next 2 years. Decent at lead guitar but have never learned scales just kinda play by ear and experience. Decent at singing.

Want to learn piano at some point this year after busy season. Also was decent at harmonica in highschool.

I played alto and tenor sax for a long time. Hated the fuck out of it. Unfortunately, it was what I was probably best at.

Always wanted to do percussion things with my friends, but now I'm wondering how hard it would be to learn piano/keyboard. I'm 29 now, so is all hope lost? Anyone?

I have always played instruments. My staple was and is the piano. I started taking lessons when I was 4 all the way through high school. I took it very seriously and actually got a small scholarship going into college. Was practicing upwards of 6-8 hours daily. I was classically trained and still have a special place in my heart for classical music, especially Chopin. Later in life, I.e. College, I got really into jazz and had a band that played a couple of local spots in green hills and belle Meade on the weekends. Also made quite a bit of money for a couple of years playing weddings and events. During HS I played brass instruments in band and got pretty good at trombone. Towards the end of college, practicality set in and I am not a professional musician as the gap between those that make a good living and those that scrape by is HUGE. I am a project manager now but still have the piano at the house and play for about an hour a day. My kids love it. It's always a good "ace in the hole" to have at company parties and what not for getting my career dick sucked by the powers that be and what not.

Drums: Started when I was 5 or 6. Drummed along to The Beatles, then graduated to Led Zeppelin. I can play almost anything now, with the exception of some jazz and anything requiring a double bass pedal.

Guitar: Not exactly sure when that started, and I continue to play casually. I can't play anything more difficult than The Mars Volta (Tetragrammaton being my ceiling, I suppose).

Bass: Again, not exactly sure when that started. I can play Incubus/RHCP-level stuff, but anything more difficult would take me some time to learn.

Piano: Off and on since I was a kid. Right now, my abilities are probably capped at Radiohead haha. Re-learned how to play Pyramid Song a few weeks ago.

I work 60-70 hours a week, in addition to getting an evening MBA. So, playing is more of a stress reliever than anything now. No time for a band. I do write stuff occasionally, though (and via loop pedals, I can literally jam with myself).

I play trombone. Been playing for 30 years now. I've played in a couple of pro orchestras for a brief time (none of the major ones). I can play pretty much any wind instrument somewhat at least okayish and percussion okayish sometimes. I also compose and produce music. I teach music in schools (including high school marching and concert band -- come at me bro).

edit - I don't have any originals that are easy to post right now, but I can maybe throw something together. I collected a bunch of hobby video game remixes I did (mostly orchestra arrangements) and "released" them in a youtube video a few years ago, so enjoy that if you want:
