I do something like that, run my compressor/drives on the front end into my amp input, out of the loop send to my time based pedals which the last two are stereo, run L of the last of those back to loop return into the amp, can run R channel into a second amp but I usually just run it to my interface to make a stereo pair there. I’m 100% a bedroom player though these days and just love experimenting with all these toys.
It was awful, as were all of the dudes who scooped mids after him. To be fair, the over correction on the other side was just as bad, when every rock player felt the need to chase the fattest bass tones they could get. Sounds cool in a bedroom, but sounds like mud in a band. Always wanted to learn about sound waves to keep my bands sounding great at lower volumes and not having instruments playing in the wrong ranges, but only so many hours in the day and I’d rather work on chops. Ha.
Always wondered how people did shit like that while playing live. Every time I try to use an effects loop, I just end up having a million cables on the floor.
Yeah as you can tell from my pic I definitely have a bunch of cables in the mix. But it could be much cleaner if I were taking it with me. There’s companies who just build high end fx boards for touring musicians. Not to mention the older trend of rack mount. But I feel like nowadays most of the big bands are just running Kempers and mainly have cabs/amps onstage for aesthetic purposes.
The ranges really aren't that bad on surface level. Like there are basic ranges where the kick/bass/guitar should be. Also having a stereo mix helps to separate but idk how you could do that live. I actually am more of a scooped guy but more Black album than Dime.
Quad cortex or any modeler/profiler would be ideal for live if I were playing live. You have all of the amps/pedals/effects/cabs right in the box and you don't have to worry about a sound guy micing it all wrong.
So can I piggyback a dumb question onto this? I bought a new amp recently and to get the sweet spot out of it, I have to run it way louder than my neighbors probably want. Can I run my regular pedal chain (or just plug my guitar directly into the normal input jack) and then run something like this https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/LittleBAB--jhs-little-black-amp-box-passive-amp-attenuator in my effects loop so I can run the tubes up a little but not blow the walls off of my rowhouse?
I think you have to be careful with the transformers in amps because they need to be able to have a load on them or it can fry your amp. JHS is a reputable company though and I'm sure they'll tell you the dos and don'ts of using it
I think as long as I'm not running it between my amp and a cabinet it's safe but yeah, seems like one of the times it's important to read the entire manual and watch a bunch of youtube instructional videos on instead of causing something stupid to happen
Haven’t tried that method but I think it should work out. I got an attenuator (cheap beginner one) a few years ago and wasn’t really happy with the tones I would get from it or with the amount I could turn down and still get a usable tone. It’s mainly why I bought a Revv G20 last spring, it’s designed to run like a traditional amp OR can be run with no speaker load at all straight into my interface via XLR. Basically has a built in attenuator that gives a ton of flexibility. I love the damn thing. You can also load up IRs via usb and make it sound like almost anything on the direct out. Big fan.
You can run the quad cortex (or any other modeler) direct into the an amp's power section/effects loop and control the volume from the modeling device. Now you don't need to buy a modeler to do that but this pedal basically works the exact same way.
this article is a mess (and I smell AI) but it explains things a little: https://www.guitarplayer.com/gear/reverb-sold-to-two-new-investors-2025 it's maybe / probably bad for the used instrument market.
Probably smart move by Fender. After everybody in the world bought guitars during Covid, I’m guessing that new sales are probably lagging. This could be a good way to still make money when the used gear market gets flooded in the next few years.
Right. This is probably also a hedge against tariffs (3/4 of all the guitars and basses sold are manufactured in like 4 Asian factories), though I don't know how tariffs work for foreign based used instrument sellers.
Fender also sells a ton of instruments made in Mexico. Their American made stuff is the high end stuff and I can't imagine it's a huge percentage of their sales.
i recently got a 6505 for my grindcore band and i'm in love with this thing - it's so heavy and it's LOUD. i snagged it locally for a steal on reverb.
my bandmate's peavy cab, not sure what speakers it has but i'm not in a rush to get my own. i had to spend a good chunk of change on the pedalboard.
Dude don’t learn about Reverb if you can avoid it. Pandemic boredom got me on there and I’m now hooked browsing for deals at all hours and buying shit I don’t need. I tell myself I’ll just sell some other pedal to pay for this new one but then I just keep both lol.
still a bit of a work in progress so i’m missing some velcro and cable management but it’s set up for me to play guitar and bass at the same time. guitar -> tuner -> a/b box -> maxon OD808 -> cheap 6 band eq -> sentry noise gate -> 6505 lead channel the bass chain is a/b box -> pitch shifter -> OD -> bass amp i also have a second nose gate in the FX loop of the 6505 because i’m running so much gain
this is the band i’m doing guitar and vocals in, we’re a 2 girls 1 cup themed pornogrind band. very silly but it’s a lot of fun. we recorded these two tracks right before i had surgery
I've got stacks of unused strings accumulated over the years. One million E, A, D, G, maybe a B or two. Zero high E cause that's what always breaks. Trying to think of a use...has anyone ever tried stringing up with extra low strings? I'm never gonna break one of those and need the spare. Could be something to experiment with.
Same thing happens to me at times. I then buy 10 high e strings at a time at a music store or online then start moving through sets to restring guitars.
Idk what I'm doing wrong or right but I basically never break strings unless they're old and need to be changed anyway.
I like Elixirs but come to think of it, yeah I guess they sell singles of those. Prob what I should do
Trimmers for me. i wish there was a way to not get endlessly stabbed by the cut strings when I'm fucking around with the headstock though.
You can bend the ends back and forth til they snap and you get perfectly flush. But if you do it wrong sometimes you ruin the string
On the ones that don't have locking tuners I wind the string under the excess and leave a little so the string doesn't unwind up the post. Also pins the string from coming out of the hole which I think is what you're describing.
Gate in the loop and 808 with drive near zero…yeah, she knows her high gain. I use an 808 in front of my block letter 5150 or Recto and goddamn does it rule.
i really opened pandora’s box by starting this pedal board. i don’t need another overdrive but there’s one calling my name
It’s a real sickness and I’ve got it too. Currently at the physical capacity limit on my board and trying to make myself NOT get another one going.
SD-1 is a good and not super expensive pedal. Although the EQ curve is similar to the 808 when the tone is dimed but it has asymmetrical clipping which the 808 does not
