Millennials grew up with J Lo and Shakira, it was definitely Gen X and Boomers that were all up in arms.
The younger Gen X did as well. I was born in 1980 and they were both popular. If you dont want them watching just turn the channel or have them watch something else. Its not hard.

Shakira is very well-respected as a musician, but even her most loyal fans would admit there’s a certain sex-appeal to her shows. Her most famous song is a meta-commentary about the world’s obsession with her belly dancing. Lopez is an actor masquerading as a singer, a categorically weak vocalist, and not-so coincidentally hasn’t had a hit single since MTV used to pimp her dance videos. She’s been known her whole career for performances that are largely centered around provocative costumes and elaborate choreography. Which is great for her and fine in general, but it’s definitely her niche. I don’t think there’s anything specifically wrong with using sex appeal and dance in halftime shows, but it’s a little disingenuous to suggest that people are tuning into J-Lo suspended twenty-feet in the air on a stripper pole wearing a booty-cheek half-thong “for the music.” That’s like saying you use to read Playboy for the articles with a straight face.
It is the definitive measuring stick of mass appeal and most watched show in American culture. I thought the halftime show was fine, but it’s hard to argue it isn’t family programming.
Shakiras most recent music hasn’t been as sexual. Her hit bicicleta did well without any sexual scenes. But you’re right, mainstream America doesn’t have an appeal for Spanish lyrics without some sex appeal. I mean are you arguing that you’d prefer to see Romeo Santos and Nicky Jam out there? Those two ladies are one of like four Latin singers that made it into mainstream America. It’s the best you’re going to get that celebrates Miami’s Latin culture without middle America going who are these people. Who exactly would be a better fit that actually celebrates Miami’s history and culture?

If you are fluent in Spanish (not make an assumption that you are or aren’t) listen to some of her early work. Jlo is an entertainer and last night was entertaining. To say it’s not at all about sex appeal would be dumb but to say that’s all it’s about would be just as dumb. Here is a couple of songs from Shakira’s first album. You might or might it be able to appreciate her vocals without understanding the language. She is a talented as she sexy.

She sounds the same in English and Spanish. She’s bilingual man. People that sound “different” aren’t comfortable in the other language.
no she doesn’t imo she sounds better in her native language. It’s not a weird thing to say she has an accent in English and that changes the way she sounds. She doesn’t have the same range and doesn’t hit the same notes in English that she does when she sings in Spanish. I’ve been a fan of hers for over 20 years.
