Tax avoidance is the legal strategic approach of minimizing your tax burden by using what the system gives you. Tax evasion is avoiding paying your taxes illegally. Thanks, Wayne
I understand your grief totally, but I think the pressure should be on avoidance of a 56% tax bill being charged by an incompetent government. Why should those citizens pay more than half their income to a pyramid of bureaucracy?
This is a terrible argument. We have an incompetent government. Does that mean I should be okay with not paying taxes?
Optimist, my cutoff is allowing citizens to innovate and avoid a ceiling on their efforts. It befuddles me that people think it’s ok to down pressure working class.
If she broke the law she needs to face the consequences of those actions. The United States let’s rich people get away with this shit way too much and it’s good to see a government making a rich person play by the same rules. I am all for taxes and everyone pay their fair share because I’m for certain things being human rights and the only way we’ll pay for those things is through taxes. It seems two very important things in Spain (education and healthcare) are funded through their taxes. I love her music but fuck her if she is trying to game the system.
Yeah of course but that’s no what is happening here. Spain uses the taxes they get to provide education and healthcare to their citizens so they aren’t paying in and getting nothing in return. IIRC what Shakira tried to do is pay no taxes because she claimed she wasn’t a Spanish resident. For that I say fuck her. She was getting the benefits of Spanish society without contributing what she was supposed to.
calm down danny boy I tend to think the Spanish government should not be entitled to taxes on all her income but that's just me. Is a unique situation considering she's not a citizen/not employed by a Spanish company
the argument itt is about a rich celebrity not paying her taxes. It’s not about an ineffectual government and it’s not about the “working class” being fucked over. It’s about one individual and that’s who I’m talking about. Muddying the waters does nothing for the conversation.
It’s a fucking dumb argument because you pay what you owe, or theoretically, you vote for new taxes after paying what you owe
For those that don't follow soccer, basically a dozen or so high profile soccer players playing in Spain have been found guilty of tax evasion over the last few years and given prison sentences under 2 years, which are suspended under Spanish law, so they don't serve actually serve them. Anyway, she should have never fell in with that bad influence Pique.
iirc she lives in Spain almost full time. She benefits from being a resident of the country and thus should pay what she is supposed to pay. If she doesn’t want to then she has the resources to live anywhere in the world she wants.
Yea I’m not arguing that point either. If I paid 3/5 of my income in taxes, I would expect to be living in a country that had a GDP per capita greater than 27k US. It’s obvious we have a disconnect here, Ive liked you as a poster for 15 years, let’s agree to disagree
I assume Spain isn't particularly interested in the bullshit where rich folks set up an account in a tax haven country and direct their image and endorsement payments to that account. A novel idea the US should look into.
There were times in the early 20th century that taxes were 70%. If that was your point, you’re correct. I was speaking to an average over years for tax collection.
27kUSD per capita is ridiculous though. That’s a systemic issue within Spain that has been projected upon Shakira. It’s a product of out of control governance.
Why would anyone do business in Spain? It’s similar to two magnets with identical poles meeting. It doesn’t work. I know, magnets, how do they work
all I’m saying is if she had to pay X she should pay X and if she didn’t she should face the legal consequences of her actions.
That’s fair, We’re arguing different points. I probably should have started a different thread for tangents
I think we need to know what social safety nets are in place there and the quality of living funded by taxes over there compared to here before we throw out tired right wing talking points about wasteful government spending and burdensome red tape
