Spoiler Amy makes me terrified of women. Ive been the pefect gentleman lately - giving my seat up on the train, opening doors, stop calling them fat. DO NOT WANT womans wrath.
Just started reading, through the first three chapters, so far so good. The different voices are very effective at conveying the personalities of the characters, kudos to the writer on this. Interested to see how it all unfolds.
Wanted to do a little reading last night after I watched some TV, so I started Flynn's first book Sharp Objects. Not as strong of a start as Gone Girl but I'm really intrigued to see where it goes, and it's almost half as long as Gone Girl was, so I can't imagine it'll take long. NOW OTHER PEOPLE FINISH GONE GIRL BECAUSE I WANT TO TALK ABOUT IT
We can play the movie casting game: Spoiler Nick - Brad Pitt (A little old, but Nicks description fits pretty well) Amy - Ali Larter Margo - Kristin Ritter Andie- (could be any big titty 20 something) Gilpin - Chloe from 24 (cant remember her name) Gilpin's partner- ??? Amy's Parents - John Lithgow and Sally Field Desi - Patrick Dempsey Desi's Mom - Judy Dench (sans accent) W/T girl from the Ozarks - Jamie Pressley The fisher guy - The guy who played Lapius form Lost Nicks dad - Jeff Bridges The frito pie lady - ??? The Nancy Grace based character - Nancy Grace Nicks Lawyer - The guy who plays Harvey on Suits Nicks Lawyers wife - Harveys boss on Suits A) shame on me for forgeting some of the characters names so quickly. B) the last three were really lazy of me, but I couldnt get hose images out of my head I think that covers just about everyone...
Finished it this morning before bed. Spoiler What a horrible story, what an amazing book. I really enjoyed it, in the sense that it had me intrigued, but I'm not sure I can say I liked it in a positive sense. Amy... that bitch is crazy, yo. Cray. Zee. Spoiler I can't see Brad Pitt and Kristin Ritter as twins. Gilpin was a dude, Boney was the female detective. Here's mine: Nick - Jake Gyllenhaal Amy - Mary-Kate Olsen Margo - Maggie Gyllenhaal Det. Boney - Hillary Swank Det. Gilpin - Steve Buscemi Tanner Bolt (Nick's lawyer) - Joel McHale Betsy Bolt (Tanner's wife) - Aisha Tyler Desi - Cilian Murphy White trash Greta and Fisherman Jeff from the cabins - I like Jaime Presley, but Jeff Fahey (Lapidus) is too old IMHO. Jason Lee would be a nice touch. Love the casting of Amy's parents. Spot on.
Spoiler Spoiler -I didnt see Ritter and Pitt as twins either. I picked Ritter more for her attitude than her looks. Which is why I cant really see Maggie as Margo. Jake G and Ritter could work. Except both Nick is blonde, and I assuming Margo is at least light haired if not blonde. Boney is supposed to be ugly/slightly abrasive., and swank isnt ugly. Had to google Cilian Murphy. Good call, better than mine. I like The Soup combo for the Bolts, and the My Name is Earl Combo for the ozark group.
Through the 2nd Nick Dunne seven days gone Spoiler I don't know how to feel right now about either character. But I do know that I love this book and probably won't go to bed tonight until I finish.
Spoiler Maybe it's because I've been watching American Horror Story lately and she plays a psycho on there, but I think Kate Mara would be a perfect Amy. Though they'd definitely have to make her look a bit older.
Just finished. Spoiler hated the ending. Like, it ruined the book for me. I'll post more thoughts tomorrow but right now I'm just pissed.
Finished Spoiler Loved loved loved the ending. This book wasn't going to have a happy ending and after what we've learned about Amy and Nick it wouldn't have been at all believable for Nick to get a step ahead of her and nail her. The end was tragic and perfect. I loved the whole book, although it made me angry a lot because Nick kept getting shit on.
Spoiler This is how I felt. It just kept building to something awful happened, and it would have gone against everything in the previous hundreds of pages if something good would have happened. Sometimes shit like that seems forced. For this book? It was perfect, like you said.
Welp, finished it last night. Spoiler I think Arkie Proud said it best, "horrible story, amazing book." BITCH IS CRAZY. Holy shit. I mean with the narrative alone it was enough, but by the end of the book I was legitimately creeped out. I didn't mind the ending even though it felt rushed. It wasn't like I was looking for closure, but I would have liked to see a short page or 2 page chapter with either Amy or Nick discussing the birth of the baby. I can't imagine their relationship/dynamic with a kid. I don't know how Amy's incessant want for attention would mesh with having a child. Anyways, great choice for the month and this is my 3rd finished book in the book club. I'm in school at the moment so having these at night is a nice wind-down.
100 pages in. Its ok so far. Watching TV shows or reading books where the main character is constantly making mistakes stresses me out.
So... I have an issue with starting this book. I paid for it and downloaded it, only for my computer with all of my stuff on it die. I have another computer, but do not want to erase my iPhone by syncing with it, so I basically have to wait until I can get my old computer back. (I'm in rural PA, and it's far from an Apple store, but my stupid cord burned up somehow). Will have a cord by Jan 20th. Spoiler Hell yes, I'm waiting to listen to it. #TeamAudiobook
So again tardy for the party, but 11% through and enjoying it. Spoiler I like how the author writes each section colloquially. It adds character to the characters without a grand narrative "providing" the insight. I'm also a bit about what's going on; just starting on Nick One Day Gone.
1. Put the audio book on working computer (via the paid version or torrance that shit) 2. Set up Google Drive or Dropbox on computer 3. Upload Audio book to GD or DB 4. Download corresponding app to iPhone 5. Download iMedia Player App to iPhone 6. Open files on iPhone in GD or DB via iMedia Player 7. Youre welcome
Yeah if you already bought it, don't feel bad about downloading it illegally. Even though you should read it like a heterosexual/literate male.
But you can't do shit and listen... Like get ready for work, drive, workout, clean, and shit like that. I actually listened to 11/22/63 on a deer stand as well. hah.
I've read her other two novels (I'm ~56% through Gone Girl, btw). I enjoyed both of them, but goddam Gillian Flynn must be fucked in the head. They are some dark, dark stories. Incredible writer though.
Sharp Objects is pretty fucked up. I thought Dark Places was even more so. And based on the current trajectory, Gone Girl seems like it could be the worst of the bunch, although seemingly an entirely different kind of fucked up.
Yeah I thought Sharp Objects seemed like a normal murder story then Spoiler the thing with the teeth came out and I was all "ok, this is a different killer." And even then I was like, alright we have a messed up killer, but let's see where it goes. Then we find out our narrator loved masturbating to a point where it seemed weird and cut words into her body. Did not expect that. Excited to see where things go.
I was going to talk about this very thing. When I first started reading the book, I thought Gillian Flynn was a dude, so I didn't really think about it. But, I wonder if the depth of Amy's craziness (and, let's be honest, the total believability) is due to the fact that a woman wrote it.
I thought it was a guy too, just assumed it was. I remember thinking "man, this guy writes a woman really well." Then I finished and found out a woman wrote it and was blown away because she wrote that psycho really well.
Wish I'd pointed that out better in the voting thread... My goodreads list had like 9 girls who had marked it as "To Read" and only 1 dude. Chicks like it, and a name like Gillian = Chick.
FWIW - I was speaking with a girl at the dog park this AM. She read the book, and said her brother is in Hollywood and said that Reece Witherspoon's production company picked up the rights to the book and she will most likely play Amy.
Now 80% in on Sharp Objects Spoiler Still wondering who the hell killed these kids. Camille just figured some shit out and thinks it's her mom. That would be quite unexpected (for me at least) because she was so broken up about her own kid dying plus those other two. Prob finishing tonight, really excited.
Finished Sharp Objects last night Spoiler Felt like the ending was rushed. I thought they did a decent job explaining what happened with the mom, and bought that she had killed the three girls, but still felt like it just happened and there it was. Definitely felt rushed with the daughter being the true killed of the girls back home. Liked it, definitely not on par with Gone Girl though. Camille's character was intriguing as hell, but I didn't think the other characters around her were as good as the ones in Gone Girl, even though some were more pronounced. That said, a good debut novel from Flynn, can definitely see the kernels in place for what she would write later. Think I might just read Dark Places this next week.
On "Amy Elliott Dunne, Eight Days Gone", about 68% of the way through, and I have never wanted to cunt-punch a character in a book like I do right now. Mark of a good writer, to make you want to do bad things to a fictional person. Great job picking this book, first part was hard to get through but after they established the background it is excellent
