Just finished, loved the book but hated the ending. Spoiler It was a hard read for me, the way their relationship broke down and the stuff she did to him reminded me a lot of my ex. Nowhere near this, of course, but she did accuse me of abusing her and my son and broke into our old house to steal all of my stuff. So it hit kinda close to home. But still awesome, great selection TMB Book Club, can't wait to get in on February. Spoiler I really wanted him to kill the bitch at the end, or at least get to see her ass thrown in jail. I'm sure the writer thought that going this way was against the norm and thus was the right way to go, but it was totally unsatisfying. That said, the author created the most twisted, fucked up character (Amy) I have ever read, and she made me loathe Nick at the same time, so I applaud her for that.
Spoiler Amy is nothing but a pretty sympathetic character until halfway through the book, so if someone is scanning through and sees you bashing her it may lessen shock for them, idk. It wasn't a huge deal but better safe than sorry.
Started Flynn's second book, Dark Places, last night. Got two chapters in and am really enjoying it. Wanted to read more but I was exhausted. Hoping to knock out a decent chunk tonight. She's a damn good writer.
IYO, what has been the best book you guys have read in the book club? Looking to read some stuff that I haven't before. LKRFN88jp, Arkie Proud, The Blackfish, Iron Mickey
Catch-22 The Passage Gone Girl Shadow of the Wind Cloud Atlas Wool Haven't read Ready Player 1 or 11/22/63 yet
I've been going back and forth on this since I finished Gone Girl. Would probably go 1a. Gone Girl 1b. The Passage 3. Ready Player One 4. 11/22/63 5. Wool
Just finished Ready Player One. Stayed up until about 4 last night and then a few hours today. Great read. Now moving on to The Passage. Can't wait. You guys have given me some awesome stuff!
Finally finished Gone Girl earlier this week. Really enjoyed it and tempted to read Dark Places or whatever the other GF book is on that Arkie Proud library. I can't say I was thrilled with the ending, but it was at least novel relative to most thrillers. Spoiler Bitch be so fucking crazy
I'm ~30% in on Dark Places and I like it much more than Sharp Objects, which was still solid. If you have it, read that. If not, I can email either one to you after work today.
Dark Places is similar in style, because it bounces back and forth from present day to 1985 with each chapter. Present day character is written in first person, whereas the 1985 chapters aren't. I was hooked right away because of this, love how it's unfolding. Sharp Objects is similar (as is Dark Places) in that it's just fucked up. Lot of crazy stuff went down in all three. Right now I'd rank them (and I obviously haven't read all of Dark Places) Gone Girl Dark Places Sharp Objects End of Sharp Objects was rushed, but I still thought it was a really good first book from Flynn and you good see the pieces in place to her next two books.
thanks, but if it's rough around the edges, I'll probably move on through my to-read and skip it plus feb will roll around here and I always seem to get a late jump on the book club book because I'm tied up with something for work or another pleasure book
Finished the book earlier this week Spoiler holy crap amy makes me scared of all women being sociopath psycho's now. Book started out a little slow but I guess once he started getting calls from Andie and you were wondering who it was, it really got good and I couldn't put it down. What I don't get is how she got pregnant. He let one loose in some tissues and left it there to antagonize her? She take it to a artificial insemination lab? Seemed weird but good ending (hated it for Nick) that stayed in line for how the rest of the book played out
Spoiler You must have missed it but several years ago nick made a deposit to a sperm bank. He thought that his baby batter was destroyed because they never used it. Amy obviously kept it on ice and the rest of the story was the end of the book.
To put it mildly. Always three steps ahead. Started reading Dark Places. Seems weird so far. She's just agreed to go to the meeting with those murder nerds.
Ive mentioned this before, but I have a neighbor that Im fairly friendly with that is former defense attorney turned author who has had moderate success. Anyway we always talk books while our dogs are playing. She knows Gillian Flynn (Gillian is pronounced with a hard G fyi) I guess they have been on several book tours together. She said she had coffee with her last month. I didnt realize but Gone Girl has been on the top of the Best Seller list for 36 weeks. It was cool hearing her talk about how this is book is a gold mine for Flynn, and how her life has changed completely. Kind of random, but I'd thought Id share.
Pretty cool. I pronounced Gillian with a hard G, which is why I probably thought it was a guy. Kinda like Gilligan.
So, upon LKRFN88jp 's insistence I started this book last night during my downtime at work. Just got to 54% mark on the Kindle. Started off pretty tame, was really wondering why people were hyping up the book, etc. Then started to pickup, the web started to spin, more details kept coming up then I get to the transition of Part 1 to Part 2. OMGOMGOMGOMGOGMOMG. Really, really into the book right now. Pretty angry I have to go to sleep now. Good choice, TMB. 1. 11/22/63 2. Ready Player One 3. The Passage But those are the only 3 books from the book club I've read, all have been very, very good. Gone Girl is up there, not sure where it will end up though. The Blackfish can I subscribe to The Shadow of the Wind newsletter via email please?
Finished. Loved it. Perfect ending for the characters. Awesome selection. Edit*, was at work, now at home. To clarify why I liked the ending: Spoiler The main 2 characters are inherently shitty humans beings. Nick is a terrible husband and person, a liar and a douchebag. Amy is a sociopath and a lying, murderous bitch. They both get stuck with something incredibly shitty for life. Amy, a husband who at his core hates her, and Nick, a wife who he cannot trust or love. Yet, they also get what they want and need: Nick, a child to show he's not the dead beat/terrible dad his own father was and a wife to hold him to the fire and make him be a good husband/dad. Likewise, Amy gets 'her equal' and someone who will give her what she wants and needs (even though it may be against his own will). I mean, clearly their marriage is a hyperbole of the "pretending" that average married couples do for each other (ie. compromise), but they are such flawed characters that they are destined to be doomed to each other forever.
So... What I did was just erase my old iPod touch and sync it with my new comp that has Gone Girl on it.. .I never use my touch anyway. Starting book today. Will be done by month's end. Right now my rankings go: 1. Ready Player One 2. 11/22/63 3. The Passage 4. Shadow of the Wind 5. Wool 6. Cloud Atlas
Well said, I now feel stupid for just hating the end, but I at least hated it because I wanted Amy to be disemboweled.
I have no problem saying my immediate reaction was that I wanted to break things. More the more I thought about it, the more I shared how RonBurgundy and others felt Spoiler 2 shitty people that deserve each other for the most part
Spoiler Everyone wanted to see Amy disemboweled. That is absolutely the correct answer. I just liked the ending because I felt, given the shittiness of the characters, their lives will forever be shitty. It's more punishment for them to be together for life than to be dead.
Definitely agree with that, I just didn't think about it that way at the time. You are much more in tune with your feelings than I. And of course your apartment smells of rich mahogany.
Agreed, I need to step my immediate analysis game up. The only reason I was okay with the ending was because it was somewhat unusual: no bad guy dies, good guy happy stuff.
