Watched the first two eps and am leaning toward stopping. Loved DD, but this isn't reeling me in so far. I'll try 3 and 4

4 episodes in. Love the depravity of Kilgrave. He is just an awful awful person. So many villains have either a "cool" factor or some understandable reason for their actions. Kilgrave is just an evil sadist.

I finished it on Sunday afternoon. Loved it. I'd probably put it a half notch below Daredevil right now, but they might be even after I digest a little.

    More in depth thoughts spoilered.

Jessica Jones - Ritter was really born for this role. If you know JJ from the comics, then you know she really nailed the character. Love how Netflix goes darker with the MCU and embraces the flaws in its lead characters.

Luke Cage - How great is the Luke Cage series going to be? I thought it was fantastic when they introduced his powers when he was casually throwing guys around while watching JJ show she is also "gifted." I'm interested in how far they go with his power level, because he should be the pretty far above the others if they follow the source material.

Kilgrave - Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. This show did an incredible job showing both how terrifying a character like Kilgrave can be, and Tennant gave a fantastic performance showcasing a man who is completed corrupted by his power. I looked at it similar to a Walter White/Heisenburg situation. Was the man always that way deep down, or was he tempted into a complete lack of morality by his power over everyone around him?

Overall, the story was fantastic, and took some twists I definitely wasn't expecting. The scene with Hope sacrificing herself was particularly unexpected. I also like they didn't take the easy way out with JJ turning Kilgrave into the police. I mean, I'm all for heroes being righteous, but how can the justice system possibly contain a man with that type of power?

My only complaint is really with the character of Simpson. The Sergeant who tries to kill Patsy just happens to be an former Operator? Kind of a stretch. Most Operators doing take jobs as beat cops when they leave government work. He then goes crazy on pills and starts killing people? Ok, kind of a side of the character we haven't seen, though. The organization he worked for and the pills he took are also tied to how JJ gained her powers? Come on. Aren't we stretching it a bit thin at this point? Honestly, it sounds like I'm bitching about it a lot more than it really bothered me, but it stuck out compared to the rest of the writing in the series, IMO.

agree with all of this, great recap of my thoughts as well! wish i had read the Alias comics before I watched this but I will definitely be putting that on my Christmas break reading...Ritter and Colbert are perfectly cast, pacing was my only complain, probably could have been a 9-10 episode series, they stretched some of that middle stuff too long but over all, think it was slightly better than Daredevil...look forward to a rewatch with my 13 year old son (to answer a previous comment, don't think it was over the line for a young teenage boy)

love this quote at the end...
"They say everyone is born a hero, but if you let it, life will push you over the line until you're the villain"

I felt Kilgrave became who he was not due to him being inherently bad/evil, but due to the absence of morals and ethics. one scene in particular is the basis for this belief.

in the scene where he and JJ rescue the hostages, and Kilgrave ordered the dad to blow his own head off, JJ stopped him, and he said "what? I just assumed that was the right thing to do"

Honestly, I'd be afraid to have that kind of power. That's why the character of Kilgrave fascinated me watching this season. Imagine you have that power starting at the age of a teen, when you are still forming your sense of morality. The temptation to use it at the expense of others would have to be overwhelming. I could definitely see the decent into depravity starting with small self absorbed wishes being fulfilled that you don't believe really hurt anyone sliding down to what Kilgrave became. I mean, I'd think it would be difficult to not eventually look down on humans like a lesser species. How long could you maintain respect or care for other people when everyone in the world can literally be your slave with a few words?

Finished last night and loved it.

worried a little bit for a season 2 with killgrave being dead. Not just because tennet was fantastic (he was), but because most of what made this show so good was exploring the idea of manipulation and rape. Killgrave wasn't the only one doing the manipulation, but he was the catalyst for the idea. Is Jessica as good of a character when her only really issue is going toe to toe with evil captain America? I'll have high hopes, but the show will miss killgrave a lot.

I hated to see him die for that reason, but there were no alternatives. Jessica absolutely could not let him live at that point. [\spoiler]

I agree with whoever said it could have been done in 10 or so episodes instead. They def stretched it out longer than necessary, kind of watered down like 3 or 4 episodes before the finale for me. Still really intrigued and give S1 a B+ rating.

In comparison in Avengers EMH he used Tony Stark to essentially take over the world by amplifying the power of his mind control. That's what I mean with him only doing fairly small potatoes stuff versus his potential (through now 8 episodes).

In the comics I always got the same vibe from him as I did Molecule Man in that they created a villain and then gave them way too much power to truly make them compelling as they're otherwise gods on Earth.

Not much of a spoiler but I'll put it in one anyway on episode 6.

Killgrave getting bored with having everyone doing anything he says and seeing if he could actually buy the house was a nice touch. I feel like that's weirdly something that would happen if you had that ability.

Was thinking about this as well

Kilgrave is the type of villain that has series finale type potential. You could get seriously creative and limitless with that kind of power from a writing standpoint. They're gonna have a really hard time making the next season's villain seem close to as formidable. Hope they didn't blow their wad in season 1.

I mean, the guy terrified JJ and gave her PTSD. How do you top that?

The first half (1-7) of the season was awesome, but the second half (8-13) of the season just wasn't that good.

What was up with the Simpson x Jessica fight in her apartment? I believe it was in Episode 11.

They're both beating the shit out of each other and throwing each other through walls. Then Jessica locks her self in the bathroom with Trish. Simpson couldn't break down a door after exhibiting super strength while fighting Jessica on the red pills.

Unfortunately, he's Nuke, so I don't think he's going anywhere. They just changed his first name from Frank as to not confuse non-comics fans with Frank Castle.

Honestly, if he's any part of the 'big bad' they're looking at for Season 2 right now, then I hope we get The Defenders first. Hopefully they can find a better villain with more time.

Like I said, his character arc is pretty much my only complaint with the first season.

well this snippet from his bio explains the terrible character

Wolverine, with some efforts, quickly dispatched his foe, seeking a way to redeem, or kill him. After the battle he discovered that Nuke's enhanced physiology was further mutated, and he has become a cyborg, with artificial limbs, bones and skull, able to survive and being rebuilt after the most gruesome injuries, yet devoid of any personality or conscience.

I guess it's possible, but they'd have to significantly power down Squadron Supreme. Hyperion alone would be able to wipe the floor with this version of The Defenders without much trouble. Also difficult to introduce characters of those power levels into the MCU without much warning.

My guess would be something like The Wrecking Crew.
