Ohio State Michigan Oregon Washington Southern Cal Penn State Wisconsin UCLA The chances of Nebraska ever being in the top 2-3 of this group are extremely rare imo, would need a heisman caliber QB.
I meant they're already better right now than UCLA, so cross that one off. They likely overtake wisconsin too. Penn State has better natural advantages but also willingly employs james franklin so they're probably not long for top tier competition either.
especially post 2020 when A&M went 9-1 with a top 5 finish and FSU was 3-6 under the 2nd coach post Jimbo. from that time forward, A&M went 19-15 (38th best in P5) while FSU is 25-10 (10th best in P5)
they would have gotten stomped in any conference with Mike Riley and frost. The b1g money gives them a bailout option forever and the ability to hire elite coaches (in theory)
I will never understand why people act like it’s good to have more money when you continuously waste it.
because hiring coaches is hard so it’s better to have more money to take better risks and be able to fire people more quickly if things aren’t working out
just to expound on the convo yesterday, I found this tweet/data interesting yes, those are the same 18 teams I defined as the "elites" in my analysis yesterday
All I’ve seen is it cause the opposite behavior where schools spend frivolously and make irrational decisions with no long term strategy. See mainly as examples Nebraska, A&M, auburn, Arkansas, michigan state, texas, and florida to name a few.
ok but also all the teams that have success are also the by far richest. money won’t buy a championship but you aren’t getting a championship without it.
I’d like for someone to show me examples of when a lot of those teams ever had one shot at winning a NC much less multiple
Just going off of memory here, but haven't all of those teams besides A&M and Tennessee either been to the playoffs or title game since 2005?
since 2005? the ones of the 18 listed who haven't played in the CFP are UF, USC, PSU, Texas, Miami, Auburn, Tennessee, and A&M of those 8, UF won 2 titles in the BCS era, USC had won 1.5 just before the 2005 cutoff and played for it all in 2005, Texas played for it in 05 and 09 winning 1, Auburn played for it in 10 and 13 winning 1. so that leaves PSU, Miami, Tennessee, and A&M that didn't make a CFP or BCSCG since 05. but, PSU had a top 3 finish and 7 top 10 since 2005 and just missed out on the CFP in 2016 (finished #5) so really only Miami, Tennessee, and A&M of the 18 did not have realistic shots at multiple titles in the period. now to be fair, I have no idea what criteria or algorithm this guy used to arrive at these numbers
Teams listed that haven’t been to the playoff once Texas Florida Auburn Aggie Tennessee Miami Oregon Penn state
I only looked at the top 14, but oregon has most certainly made the playoff (and another title game appearance outside of that). The data is back to 2005, so you'd have title appearances or wins from texas, UF, and auburn. We can definitely agree to laugh about penn state and miami, though.
Only 7 schools have won a playoff game: Alabama (9) Clemson (6) Georgia (5) Ohio State (3) LSU (2) Oregon (1) TCU (1)
and only 7 others have even made the CFP OU 0-4 ND 0-2 Michigan 0-2 FSU 0-1 Sparty 0-1 Washington 0-1 Cincinnati 0-1 and that number doesn't look like it will change this year unless Texas slips in; 7 of the top 8 in the current CFP have made 20 combined appearances in the semis and 12 title games (and 6 of 9 titles)
