That changes with this next round of tv deals, but yes, I feel like they overpaid for years for a shit product
Eh. Keith Jackson, madden, Kevin Harland, even dick vtale. Does anyone have a single memorable moment defined by Joe buck? I'm not sure he even enjoys sports. He was installed by his dad in the industry. He's been in it for like 30 years and if he just disappeared I doubt I'd notice he was gone. Don't get it
I don't think I've ever made it through an entire Joe Buck broadcast without falling asleep for at least a few minutes. His flat, monotone delivery is like pure melatonin.
They haven't overpaid because they get a lot more than just MNF. The games might not be great, but that's just a piece of what they get for those rights. ESPN wouldn't be able to function without that NFL deal at this point.
Yeah, that’s a great point that I neglected. The actual schedule of games they had has been shit, but the rest is very valuable to ESPN.
Fair. That's a good one. Astros can suck it, but cheers to the ticket takers who let us for free in on a road trip. Cool stadium
It's the same as when people talk shit about ESPN paying too much for the NBA. Being able to show highlights and video of NFL/NBA content 24/7 across all those platforms is enormously valuable for ESPN/Disney. You can't just use NFL videos whenever you want if you don't pay for certain rights to them. It's why if you watch stuff on FS1 or other networks, when they talk about the NFL, they can only show still photos instead of video. They don't own the rights to be able to do anything else. ESPN would never be able to put out daily NFL/NBA shows like they do with all that content without having the video rights to them. A lot of people seem to just ignore that and only focus on the live event part of those deals.
I like Joe Buck and think he's a good announcer. I think he and Aikman are the best NFL broadcast team in the league. I think he's generally been a good baseball announcer, but FOX has ruined him over the years by sticking him with McCarver (who was old and dumb) and Smoltz (who brought out the worst in Buck). I'm guessing Joe Davis gets first crack at being FOX's #1 guy for baseball, and I'm hoping his time with the Dodgers can stiff arm enough of Smoltz's bullshit to where I can listen to them on occasion during games.
Good work, gents. I can see where him calling memorable games for fans endears him. Though, even in those moments, he just says something then nothing of import.
I think that was Brian Anderson. He, Darling and Frenchy are the top TBS team, I think. Davis was the guy who did a lot of FS1 games, I believe. He also does CFB and NFL games for FOX.
Brian Anderson is a very highly regarded guy, too. If he's contractually able (I'm not sure exactly who he works for nationally), he would be on the short list of replacements, too. He's also been the Brewers' PbP guy for a long time.
Aikman seems like a bitch and a half to work with, so paying for someone you know can mesh with him is a good move.
Aikman seems alright as a person, but he does seem like he's been concussed a bit more than you'd like. They do make a decent enough combo
when his bitch ass cried about Randy Moss "mooning" Lambeau also when Artie Lange singlehandedly detonated his HBO talk show
Digging the joe buck clips, especially from #zeropointzero. Wouldn't mind a worst of joe buck thread. He's like the smug dork you didn't like but hung out with because he had dirt bikes
The dude is living his absolute dream job and acts like it on every call. Some of y’all just love hating.
I met Joe Buck at Pebble Beach. It was the day of a US Open practice round, and he was staying on property. He played Spyglass that morning and the uber couldn’t get him to his house, so he just hopped out with clubs and all at the assigned Uber drop off lot for the tournament. He had a hat on and sunglasses, so no one really noticed. I said “holy shit, that’s Joe Buck!” He looked at me and did the finger over the mouth “shhh” signal and then walked over to our group. He stood and talked to us for like five minutes while we waited on our ride. Super nice guy. I had met Mike Tirico that morning (a story I’ve told on here before), so when we parted ways I said “keep Tirico in line!” Confused, but politely, he responded “will do!” And so he became a valuable assist on my whole ruse making my friends think I’m friends with Tirico.
This may be me confusing things, but I feel like you’ve made this exact same post on this board. it may have been just the Tirico part though. But I had crazy deja vu reading that
