A buddy of mine worked for a company early on when it was getting started to the point it finally went public around 15 years later. During the time he had stockpiled a pretty good chunk of stock. After they went public he cashed out with about $1.4-$1.6 million or so. I never asked for specifics. About a year later he had invested it all into some fairly safe investments and moved to Southern Cal. He has a modest condo and basically retired. The original 1.4 mil kicks off about 100k a year in income which he lives off. He plays golf every other day and surfs a ton. Usually ends up playing video games most afternoons. The guy is in his late 40s. If you have a decent amount to start you can live comfortably just off the income and never really touch the principal.
