It's going to be hard to top the "Everyone this motherfucker has ever had a conversation with needs to die slow to make this right" of the first one.

On that note, while I enjoyed the movie a lot, did anyone else find the son getting his to be a little anticlimactic? I really didn't want him to die like his faceless henchmen taking one or two to the head. I wanted Wick to literally kick his fucking head in.

There has been talk of a spinoff of the Continental being a storyline. I think it's a great idea. Tons of material and you could go in literally tons of different directions with this.

Still a minor regret of mine that I didn't go to the theater to see this with my wife.

Animal abuse has the same effect on her as I imagine slapping her across the face and calling her a cunt would have. Watching it in the living room as Wick is acting out his revenge she's screaming "YEAH RIP THAT PUPPY KILLING RUSSIAN FAGGOT'S THROAT OUT AND SHOW IT TO HIM. PIECE OF FUCKING SHIT!"

That would have been awesome in a theater around my hood.

I'm not going to spoiler, because, if you haven't seen this awesome movie yet and still went into a thread about the second one, well... Fuck you.

I actually thought it was perfect how they put the son down. The character was nothing but a nasty little peon. Sure, he was the catalyst that started Wick's warpath, but that's it. He isn't worth Wick's time. The only character worth anything more than just a bullet in the head to John was Viggo.

Also, this is probably my favorite dialogue exchange in an action movie last year:

My minor foible with this otherwise enjoyable movie.
Watched and enjoyed the fuck out of this movie but a few things about it puzzled me to the point of minor annoyance. I know this Wick fella is some sort of Keyser Soze meets Duke Togo hardass the way everyone who knows about him revers his skill and fears his wrath and what's not but I honestly can't believe that certain entities had their chance to off him and just lets him go. Enough to send a person mad, but everytime he picked up a gun I pushed that shite out of my mind and enjoyed the ride. I liked it. Will try and see this one at the cinema.

If I'm not entirely mistaken, and there is room for that because during this particular movie I had a cheeky joint someone brought to the party and I'm a lightweight when it comes to that stuff so I was proper munted, but Viggo and his guys eventually wear John down enough to strap him to a chair and he gives John shite for thinking he could just leave his old life behind and doing all of this because of a dog...then he leaves his goons to do him in with predictable results.

I'm sure it's prolly under a Tv Tropes banner somewhere where the bad guy who thinks he has the upperhand, walks away and waxes wise instead of finishing the job only to have the hero wheedle out via Deus Ex Machina or some other by the grace of god scenario, but you've got a guy who, as you said, completed an impossible task by killing like literally every other mobster out there...and you leave it to a henchman because you're off to see a man about a horse. Fuckin' slayed me, man.

that's not really letting him go though. Bosses very rarely get their hands dirty in movies. That's just typical movie stuff. It's not like he was like, we beat you down and now are going to let you go.

  35. Boner_Jihad

Boner_Jihad "Do you like hurting people?"

I get that...but it's John Wick. Wouldn't you want to see him dead before you left the room, even if it weren't by your own hands? It's a movie so there isn't going to be any quick executions just to get it over with because the characters have narratives to play out before the predetermined end comes about, but had the escape happened while Viggo was pratting on about John's choice to come back and do all that, I personally think that would have been a bit more palpable than Viggo playing Idiot Ball by leaving it to his henchmen and just leaving. Minor foible but that doesn't take away from how much I really enjoyed this movie and the character of Viggo as well.

I watched John Wick last night and thought it was amazing. The story was nothing special but it was shot wonderfully. It reminded me of Nicolas Winding Refn but with more sustained violence.

It looks like everyone has hit on most of the awesome parts but I want to add that the club scene was badass. It reminded me of a heightened Collateral. Perfect musical transition from basement to dance floor too.

Also, I loved the cast. Keanu is at his best when he doesn't have to do much explaining, and I understood his need to go on a rampage after losing his last bond to Bridget Moynahan. Everyone else was awesome too especially the oft underrated Michael Nyqvist. They did well to get so many great character actors so that no one overplayed their parts.

Just a fun movie that's aesthetically pleasing. They didn't reinvent the action movie or anything, but it was refreshing to see a movie like this that got so much right that it overcame its deficiencies.

The best line I heard in summary of why this movie is good: "This is a movie that knows exactly what it is."

It's a cartoony action movie, but never goes over the top.

Yeah, it was self-aware without having to wink at the camera like a lot of other over-the-top action flicks.

I also respect that it didn't try to force any big twists or contrived story lines. I think they understood that the inciting incident was out-there enough and they never tried to overcompensate, they just leaned into it and made a fun movie. For example, they didn't force any cheesedick sexual tension between Wick and Perkins, and every character's intention was fairly straightforward. I guess Dafoe might have surprised some people but it was blatantly obvious to me that he fired a warning shot after spotting the intruder.

Side bar: "In English" is one of the better running gags I've ever seen in an action movie.

You always see movie villains talking amongst themselves in their native tongue. The usual gag is that the protagonist actually speaks the language and knows what they're saying the whole time (John does this). But I thought it was a fresh idea to have Dennis Duffy from All-State always asking the mobsters reiterate their points in English so that he'd be on the same page.

That's a good way to summarize the movie; John Wick still plays on action movie tropes but takes them to a new(er) level
