I'm sure identity politics can be defined in different ways. If Larry Elder was talking about identity politics then he was probably discussing race, gender, sexual orientation etc.
I think his main point is that you should call people by their preferred gender pronoun because you're a respectable human being, not because the government forces you to do it.

I agree with all the bold, but ignoring the ideological similarities to the far right end of western civilization types I disagree with. He clearly discourages tribalism to defend people he thinks he's similar to but bangs the drum for it against things he disagrees with. If we are talking about the pronoun debate, it really is a false dilemma if you think about it. In ordinary speech, when I am talking TO someone, I never use a pronoun, since it would be tantamount to speaking to someone in the third person, i.e. as if they are not there. When I am talking to someone, I just call them by their name, and the only way I know their name, is by them telling me the name. The only time you would utilize these pronouns like ze and zir is if you were talking about someone who was not present. And personally, I would judge the level of "respect" I show someone by analyzing WHAT I was saying about them rather than the pronoun I use. For example, "You know that transgendered person Terry. Ze is a complete piece of shit who is stain on humanity" does not show anywhere near the respect as saying "He is an incredibly brave person for publicly embracing his gender identity and speaking out for others." I guess if people want to be offended, they will find a way..........
