I'm going to be in KC and Manhattan next week and have two open days exploring your cities. Can I get some food and drink recommendations?
Where you staying at in KC? Oklahoma Joes if you're looking for BBQ. 47th and Mission is prob the closest location if you're downtown. Prob gonna be a line around the corner. If that bothers you Q39 is a great bbq place down the road that should be less busy. Sporting KC just opened No Other Pub, which is probably now the best sports bar in KC. Antons Taproom downtown is a good spot for casual drinks too.
Kc-Bryants. Jazz for cajun. Go to the blvd brewery Mhk-the chef, harrys, coco bolos, and for beers little apple brewery is pretty underrated.
If it's a Wed-Sat, go get drunk in Westport--Harry's, Kelly's, Julep, the Alehouse, and Dempsey's will all treat you right, depending on the night. If it's a Wednesday, go to the piano bar, there will be tons of drunk UMKC girls there. The granfalloon on the plaza is another popular sports bar, Up Down is a solid arcade bar closer to downtown, and the green lady lounge and the phoenix are great places for live jazz. As far as food goes, Joe's on 47th is always safe for BBQ. I'll leave it to you to google them, but I enjoy Jax Oyster Bar (a little pricier), Lulu's for pseudo Thai food, the Peanut for wings, Nara for sushi, and The Majestic for steak.
Food - The Reiger. Then go downstairs to manifesto their speakeasy. Also, the sous chef of the Reiger is a giant slut so that's neat.
This is a great call. Forgot about this, manifesto is pretty great. If you want Mexican food, go to southwest boulevard, as there 6 or 7 Mexican places within a few blocks. Empanada Madness is my favorite.
Staying in Lenexa, but most of my time will be in the city. Thanks for all the recs guys. I appreciate it.
Nice, I grew up in Lenexa. But yea do most of your shit in the city. There's an Oklahoma Joes right next to you in Olathe, so that should be easy to do.
KC suggestions p much covered in MHK go to Aggieville. Coco Bolos, So Long Saloon, Taco Lucha are all great for food. it's grown a shitload since I've been and I think it has a lot of other new shit now too that's probably even better. walk into any bar to booze. best bars iyam are Kites, Auntie Maes, Salty Rim, So Long, Kathouse, actually come to think of it all the bars are great. if you stay out late go to the varsity donuts food truck and get the mac n cheese grilled cheese sandwich.
Also OP, I'm assuming by next week you mean you'll be here M-F next week(14-18). Two things, one st pattys on Thursday, Westport in KC is the place to be if you want to get hammered. Second, if it's not just the work week Sporting KC play at home the 12th and 20th and their games are fun af. Get hammered at the stadium then stumble to the casino and gamble till you sober up imo.
Current O.P. resident Weird that KC has 2-3 casinos, but not really any strip clubs. Best Pizza:Minsky's Most of Johnson County is generic/suburban hell Most of Wyandotte County outside of The Legends/Sporting Park is ghetto. Gasoline & liquor stores are cheaper on Missouri side. Older video..
reiger is a great suggestion. other downtown/river market food suggestions: antons, il lazzerone, farmhouse, columbus park ramen, town topic (after 1 am) drinks: cigar box, up down (tapcade), toms town, green lady lounge (awesome live jazz)
Live just a few blocks from there and only went for the first time during restaurant week. Place is unreal good.
Julep is probably my favorite bar in Westport now. Love doing the beer and shot combos and their old fashioned.
If you're in Lenexa there is a good coffee shop. Black Dog Coffeehouse. Pretty hipster but the coffee is pretty good and the toast (for real) is pretty amazing.
Suggestions on Lawrence are appreciated as well. I might make a trip over to check out the hall of fame.
where did we go the last time we met up? that place was legit. also dont forget about dark horse! hardcorekickball
Coming in town this weekend to surprise my dad for his 60th. Heading to Lidia's for dinner tonight, then probably hop on over to Reiger for drinks. Also, Winsteads need to be added to the late night menu.
It's a neat town. They call it the Bahgdad of Kansas. I'm sure they have restaurants too. Anyway, pack a bulletproof vest.
When did Falloon become a husker bar? The crowd there is definitely a college aged crowd. Gram & Dunn is right next door and is better suited for an old fart like me. Can we also discuss the terrible progression of O'Dowds? Was meant to be a traditional irish pub and now has turned into guido techno club central.
i think that was yardhouse, if i remember correctly. their beer list is amazing. also, darkhorse closed and is now gambals, i think
I enjoyed KU a lot. Besides that, they have a BWW downtown. I watched a basketball game at a bowling alley once. I have nothing else nice to say about Lawrence.
Yea definitely check out the Fieldhouse and HOF. Sprint Center in KC has the College Basketball Experience next door as well. Never been in it, but have heard good things. Free State Brewery in Lawrence is the best place for food/beer combo. I'd suggest at least getting a couple brews there. Burger Stand is the best burger, Zen Zero is the best asian. But other than the Fieldhouse, Lawrence isn't going to offer much entertainment unless you're hunting for some late night college trim.
For Lawrence--I'd say stick to Mass Street. Free State, Zen Zero, Burger Stand, Louise's, Sandbar, and the Red Lyon are all great places.
if you havent been to the negro baseball hof museum and the ww1 museum you are doing kc all wrong. they are both incredible
truth 18th and vine is awesome, and the jazz museum is there too. plus, you can go to the mutual musician's foundation at 1 am and watch musicians jam until 5 am.
for KC, drive to Kauffman stadium then sit in your car and drink beer while watching baseball on EMAW FC television.
my name is yung fancy and i'm here to say 'if you don't like KC, get the fuck out my way' boulevard beers and oklahoma joes dank ass BBQ sauce slathered on some hoes really cool place to drink in your car top notch posters and IRL friends by far
