It's pretty solid. It's right there with blueberry muffin in the next tier after those four I mentioned. The only ones I haven't liked at all yet were the seasonal pumpkin pie and peppermint bark ones.
I know everyone loves quest bars for some reason but they are very highly processed and the high fiber content can cause some GI issues and they definitely shouldn’t be used as a meal replacement because it’s all filler and no actual nutrient profile so if anything these protein bars should be used as an occasional snack and not as part of your daily diet
the bars and snacks and stuff are going to be the most difficult thing for a lot of people to cut but pretty soon it’ll all come naturally. For me personally I haven’t purchased protein bars in years. I do have protein powder but use it only in emergencies or if I’m adding it to a dish. Try and stick with natural foods because they contain vital nutrients that you need especially when doing keto
I eat one of those epic sriarcha chicken bars like once a week but that's really the only thing. Thankfully I don't have a sweet tooth so it's a little easier
I think the short answer is that it's not effective for many people. Personally, i've never been able to eat carbs "moderately." Moderating fat and protein, however, is incredibly easy. And my experience with attempting keto (3 weeks in) was reduction in carbs alone has caused pretty severe symptoms, regardless of whether I'm in ketosis or not, so i might as well go whole-hog with keto.
But what if I don't like that answer and just want to be able to use them once in a while as a quick grab out the door for breakfast on my way to work?!? WHAT THEN JOE!?! QUIT RUINING MY KETO BRO
Then the bars can trigger an insulin response and knock you out of keto and the excess fiber can make you shit ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
What does triggering an insulin response and knocking you out of keto mean? Like I can be knocked out of keto just by eating one or if I eat one I’ll be more likely to eat more sugar after?
It can cause an insulin spike in the body and can do things like mess up your gut biome or knock you out of ketosis. That’s why it’s best to avoid artificial sweeteners on this diet. Keto really has an effect on your insulin responses
I’ve always just saved the grease from frying bacon. Builds up really quick if you’re eating it all the time and makes sprouts or veggie sautés taste amazing. Bonus plus you don’t have to risk clogging your sink or putrefying your garbage can to dispose of the excess grease. Sadly the bff isn’t a huge bacon fan so I don’t generate enough anymore to use as a butter/oil substitute.
when you say that quest bars 'cause an insulin spike', is this due to the high protein content? bc I didn't realize dietary fiber or artificial sweeteners could have that effect. Are they using a certain type of dietary fiber in those things, that's particularly bad? Google's results on this topic are ... confusing.
So Joe, should I not supplement in 2 protein shakes a day? I don’t care about the caloric intake, just want the excess protein and ability to put more mass on my measly body
Artificial sweeteners have never been conclusively proven to effect insulin levels at all. There’s a few studies that say it might and health blogs love to run with the idea but at the end nothing has ever been conclusive or replicable.
Made this last night for dinner https://alldayidreamaboutfood.com/keto-salsa-chicken/ It's not the most appealing looking thing, but it was delicious. It was even better as leftovers for lunch today.
Pan frying a steak vs. protein shakes I don’t have a grill, and my cooking situation isn’t ideal until March
Splenda will, because it has dextrose in it, but again, there has been no definitive study on humans saying artificial sweeteners raise insulin levels. I’m not saying they’re healthy by any means but they shouldn’t be a concern for knocking someone out of ketosis. Here, it took me 5 seconds on pubmed to find a study that says sucralose has no effect on insulin levels. Spoiler The incretin hormones, glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP), play an important role in glucose homeostasis in both health and diabetes. In mice, sucralose, an artificial sweetener, stimulates GLP-1 release via sweet taste receptors on enteroendocrine cells. We studied blood glucose, plasma levels of insulin, GLP-1, and GIP, and gastric emptying (by a breath test) in 7 healthy humans after intragastric infusions of 1) 50 g sucrose in water to a total volume of 500 ml (approximately 290 mosmol/l), 2) 80 mg sucralose in 500 ml normal saline (approximately 300 mosmol/l, 0.4 mM sucralose), 3) 800 mg sucralose in 500 ml normal saline (approximately 300 mosmol/l, 4 mM sucralose), and 4) 500 ml normal saline (approximately 300 mosmol/l), all labeled with 150 mg 13C-acetate. Blood glucose increased only in response to sucrose (P<0.05). GLP-1, GIP, and insulin also increased after sucrose (P=0.0001) but not after either load of sucralose or saline. Gastric emptying of sucrose was slower than that of saline (t50: 87.4+/-4.1 min vs. 74.7+/-3.2 min, P<0.005), whereas there were no differences in t50 between sucralose 0.4 mM (73.7+/-3.1 min) or 4 mM (76.7+/-3.1 min) and saline. We conclude that sucralose, delivered by intragastric infusion, does not stimulate insulin, GLP-1, or GIP release or slow gastric emptying in healthy humans.
no study anywhere is conclusive about anything. Of all the artificial sweeteners, sucralose has been found to have the most adverse effect, either by directly impacting insulin levels or affecting gut bacteria. I’m not saying to never eat it, I’m just advising people to be cautious
Sucralose and dextrose have been used in the bodybuilding and training communities as a way to trigger insulin responses during a workout. That’s why you see sweet tart wrappers in the gym and they even sell sucralose and dextrose supplements
Ive got to pretend sometimes, I spent too damn much money just to say “floss more ya fuckhead” 30 times a day.
