Kyrie Irving Discusses Controversy Surrounding His Flat Earth Comments
Kyrie Irving has heard all kinds of criticism and ribbing about his flat earth comments. With a month to reconsider his position, Irving doesn't appear to be budging.

“It’s OK to think something that, I guess, the majority wouldn’t think,” Irving said on the Road Trippin' podcast (h/t James Herbert of CBS Sports). “I just didn’t like the fact that us being able to celebrate our individuality and things that we ultimately hold on to, and just because we don’t believe what the world thinks or what the majority thinks, then why punish that?

"That’s the only thing I felt like that got misconstructed is just that it’s OK to believe one thing. It’s OK to have your own thoughts and be able to function and be able to formulate your own thoughts and opinions and still be able to convey them to other people.”

Irving first said he believes the earth is flat during an appearance on the podcast last month.

"I'm telling you, it's right in front of our faces. They lie to us," Irving said. "There is no concrete information except for the information that they're giving us. They're particularly putting you in the direction of what to believe and what not to believe. The truth is right there, you just got to go searching for it."

The Cleveland Cavaliers guard quickly became a trending topic on Twitter and was oft-mocked throughout All-Star weekend. Irving's teammates came to his defense and even poked fun at the incident, with Richard Jefferson wearing a "flat world champions" t-shirt:

Even renowned scientist Neil deGrasse Tyson chimed in with his opinion.

"Let me be blunt," Tyson told TMZ. "We live in a free country, so you ought to be able to think and say whatever you want. If he wants to think Earth is flat, go right ahead—as long as he continues to play basketball and not become head of any space agencies."

Irving, for his part, seemed a little befuddled by the reaction.

“I found it somewhat hilarious just by the reaction it got,” Irving said. “That right there, before we went into All-Star weekend, we talked about this. Because we were like, ‘This is gonna be crazy, going into All-Star weekend, flat Earth, round Earth conversation. Aliens. No conspiracy theories. So as I’m at All-Star weekend, I’m starting to see different news channels, different people pick it up. And it almost felt like I was standing on top of a pendulum and I was like swinging back and forth and then it gave everyone a chance to just look at me and then, if they didn’t agree with me, kind of like throw rocks at me. Just like, ‘no, he can’t believe this.’"

Irving did say, however, he was happy that his comments opened up a conversation that informed some of the public. That said, he doesn't appear to have much interest in backing down from his contention that the world is flat.

What do these following statements mean to you then:

“It would be scientifically impossible, which I’m totally aware of that,” Irving said.

“I just feel like the fact that it’s even a conversation is hilarious,” he said. “That that could actually be news. It’s hilarious.”

This I agree with. His reasoning for the trolling doesnt make all that much sense but he is very clearly trolling. He doesnt believe the earth is flat and neither does Shaq.

He gets that science says it's impossible. Lots of people understand science says it's impossible. They just don't agree and think it's a conspiracy for whatever reason

He's amazed that people are that interested in his views on this. He's upset that no one would talk about anything about him personally besides the fact that they think he's a literal retard. He has not backed off of his stance at all.

Playing basketball has nothing to do with it. I would expect this sort of theory from someone in west virginia who has never left their home town. But if you've so much as been on a an airplane like he has hundreds of times you can begin to see the curvature of the earth at that altitude.

Also there's Trump level stupidity and then several leagues below that there is the earth is flat level stupidity.

The only rationale I've ever seen is something along the lines of hiding the existence of God

Also to add on to the ice wall discussion, in their model, Earth is also covered by a dome called the Firmament, so essentially we live in a snow globe

Flat Earther's smoking gun seems to be the calculation of curvature. Basically things can be seen at great distances when at "sea level" that shouldn't be seen due to calculation of curvature. Also, they say at great heights the horizon always remains at eye level and no curvature can be seen to the right or left, or at least the amount of curvature expected when applying the calculation.

DISCLAIMER: I'm not a flat earther or conspiracy nut I just like to look into the reasoning behind their claims, rather than just chalk it up to plain stupidity.

They need to go climb a rock.

People who climbed Everest said they were amazed by the curvature of the earth. But you don't even need to climb Everest to see it.

Also if the earth is flat then saying high places don't reveal ENOUGH curvature still shows the theory to be wrong. What proves too much proves nothing at all.

it's the north pole, the sun's path over the Earth is far enough away from the center for ice

on a related note, I've also seen a belief, not necessarily with flat earthers, that there's a hole in the north pole that leads to underground civilizations

It's crazy to me how conspiracy theorists think there are groups capable of sitting on these huge world shattering secrets. If the Earth was flat, moon landing fake, 9/11 an inside job, etc, there'd be leaks upon leaks about it. The number of people that would have to be in on it and then keep quiet about it is basically impossible.

There is no solar system to them, it's just the sun and the moon, and what we think of as a planet, is just one of many lights fixed in the sky. Don't think I've seen any kind of explanation for what they think these lights are.

Also don't believe there is any general consensus as to how deep the Earth is or anything like that.

Personally, my favorite way to conceptualize it is to go all out and imagine we're just one of however many puddles of life residing any kind of mass you feel like picturing. Yes, I became fascinated by all of this with BoB dropping the bombshell on us.

Are all the other planets flat too and we're just lucky that their fat side is facing us as opposed to the thin side?

If we found something in Antarctica like ancient ruins , would that not open the door to there being a lot more we don't know about?

again a lot of their theories revolve around just believing what you see. If the ground looks flat, the earth is flat. If you don't feel like you're spinning 25,000 mph on a ball then you must be stationary.

Then apply all other conspiracies here and there and you got yourself a Conspiracy Stew.
