You wouldn’t think it, especially based on recent decisions, but Iowa was the third state to legalize gay marriage. Eastern Iowa especially has a strong liberal contingent that is pretty active and consistent
It seems like forever ago but there were actual policy positions that were at least understandable, even if I didn't like them. Now it's all culture war insanity and vibes. There's a Republican here who said he would deal with Black Lives Matter and antifa using "strategic decapitations" in a race that's basically a coin flip.

I was raised to think being a Republican man was being tough and being tough was the only acceptable way to be. It took a long time to change but I feel pretty proud to have looked deep into my soul and done a 180. P tough to do when your political identity is unfortunately quite intertwined with your actual identity. It’s ruined some relationships as well but that’s ok.
