As one that has used PGR the last two years I don't believe that PGR promotes lateral growth but it definitely slows it down from vertical growth.

Completely agree. I think it *appears* (maybe to many?) to push "lateral growth" because of the way the plant appears due to vertical suppression. It definitely helps from having to cut 2/3 times/week during the height of summer.

How often should I be watering the sod I just installed? 4 times a day for an hour is what I set my sprinklers.

Sounds like you are on the surface of the sun with that much water.

In Texas, 3x a day for the first few days, then weaning off over the course of 21 days, where you land at 1x a day.

Kentucky bluegrass. Google gave me a huge range of responses but was told by the sod guy and a landscaper guy to water the piss out of it.
The sprinklers I have don’t put out much water. I put a rain gauge out to get a better idea, so if someone knew how many inches it should get that might be better than time/frequency

Average temps the next week is about 55 low and 75 high.

I’ve got some invasive Bermuda popping up in some centipede that’s 3 years old now. I assume this is a difficult fix. Anyone ever dealt with this before?

Been kinda getting annoyed with Rachio the past few weeks where we keep having possible scattered showers and hurricanes in the area and it auto skips due to forecast but we don't get actual rain at my house

What’s everyone’s go to weed/grass killer? I’d like some real strong shit because I’m tired of spraying every couple of weeks. I’ve got a ton of rocks in my landscaping, around my pond, and a stone driveway that seems to be a never ending job of keeping the weeds out. My latest brand trail is going to be round up 365, for what I paid for it nothing should ever grow in it again.

Last summer was hotter up to this point, but we seem to be heading that direction
I'm considering if I can program my sprinklers to just run like 10 minutes a zone in a constant cycle, 24 hours a day, and I'll adjust it back from there

Sprinklers are on a well, so WTF do I care?

Round up really is the best, but in my experience you have to get concentrated and mix it a little heavy

Maybe I should mix it stronger, I’m just going direction strength on the concentrate. Red cap shit as well which isn’t the strongest anyway

Use ideally in fall when plants are transporting nutrients down into their roots

Use ideally in afternoon on dry days where no rain is forecasted

I'm not sure if I've asked this question in here before, but anyone have solid tips for getting rid of dallisgrass? I had this shit, and it's everywhere. Previous owners didn't treat the lawn; I don't mind spring clover at all, but the dallisgrass is awful: grows so fast and is a bitch to bag.

Water meter that my irrigation system is on went from $20 a month to $66 a month when I started running it on my 1 acre property. Guess that's not terrible to keep the yard sufficiently watered.

Many years ago my well went out and i had to water my yard with metered water
It increased my water bill by $300 the first month, summer in Texas
Fixed that well real quick after that

I had a slab layed in my back yard and unbeknownst to me, and the concrete guy didn't bring it up either, apparently there was a sprinkler head underneat where it was laid. I started noticing that a column in my back patio had water shooting out of it in the mornings when the sprinklers were going off. I told my lawn guy and he has tried to figure out how to just turn it off but has failed. He is worried that having a bunch of water underneath the slab and more importantly the foundation of my house could lead to massive structural issues. Not sure if he's being an alarmist or not. I'm about to have to get someone to come digging around out here to get to the bottom of it .

  26. tmank87

    tmank87 Well-Known Member

Uhh, yep. Not to be an alarmist but I'd be shutting off that zone ASAP. Having water under the slab is going to cause erosion and could lead to the slab failing (and sinking/cracking/falling into the earth).

Is your house on a crawl or a slab? If the former, I'd be under there 5 minutes ago checking to see if you've got a swimming pool (or any water) under your house.

Anybody taking care of their lawn this year? I know tmank87 is obviously. Cut my lawn to .5 inch saturday, had it aerated this morning, picked up the cores, put a 16-8-10 down and turned on the sprinkler system this afternoon.

5 yards of sand arrives Thursday or friday this week.

I had some winter weeds from neighbors this year so I sprayed out with Celsius and Certainty today along with some micros and Bifen. Couldn’t stand looking at the weeds anymore.

It’s officially go time for warm season grass.

Bc of my job I have access to wholesale prices on chemicals & seeds

put some down some high dollar shit I got for cheap as hell that will keep allegedly all weeds from germinating before we put mulch in flower beds.

put 4 pounds of Bermuda out today in an area that our sprinklers don’t reach. Was way too much but I had no clue what I was doing to be honest. Will be drinking beers and watering it by hand for the next month or so.

need to spot treat the weeds that had already started growing before we put the pre emergent down and yard should be looking good

It's already hitting 75 degrees here. So putting down 3 way, etc but it's too hot to put anything crazy on tall fescue.

My spreader is old and apparently leaks out the side. Burned a nice spot in the yard. I have to cut a square out of the backyard to plug it.

Also, walking the neighborhood recently, I'm still in shock at how many people water weeds or just dirt in their yards. You actively went out to buy several sprinklers(some pretty expensive), hoses, etc. just to water weeds all spring and summer?

Put some pre-emergent with nitrogen down about a month ago, then proceeded to have a blizzard lol

Think it’s finally kicking in though, was out of town last week and we got a couple inches of rain and it’s now in the 60-70s so the lawn is coming in nice. My neighbors just got new sod so they’ve been watering like crazy so that side of my lawn has getting a ton of extra water. Makes mowing a pain in the ass though, my mower keeps clogging because I can’t get a time my lawn is dry. Neighbors probably think I’m an idiot.

Are you a dealer? Or just work for one of the companies?

My fiancé’s dad farms and he gave me some industrial level concentrate for weeds, it only needs like 1/2 oz in my sprayer and gets the job done. I’ve had it for 6 years now and have barely put a dent in it because it’s so concentrated.

What kind of pre emergent are you using? Does it work for broadleaf? Seems like the stuff I use is solid but geared specifically to crabgrass.

I've found 2-3 applications of pre emergent is the key.

Also, no granular weed treatments imo.

If you have a Site One in your area, go there. They will tell you everything you need to know.

Same. I put mine down earlier than most, because I usually don’t turn my sprinklers on until mid-May so I have to time it around whatever precip we’re getting in March. So I usually do Mid-March app, then a second app 10ish weeks later and that can usually get me through the fall.

A few years ago, I stopped applying the granular weed and feed, and just stuck to spot spraying weeds. Seems like it works better, and much easier to time with my other apps. Only do granular pre emerg now.

My lawn isn't that big, so I use a hand pump sprayer for spot weed control. When I put down the pre emergent on the whole yard it really sucks. I need to buy a backpack sprayer now tbh.

I put down granular fertilizer with a super old broadcast spreader. I'm about to upgrade it since I'm doing all of my own treatments now.

Spec Flo is the GOAT. Just be careful because it can cause rooting issues when used consistently. I try to use it in either the spring or fall and use Ronstar for my other application.

it’s definitely one of life’s many mysteries. I think it really boils down to a lack of education and what to really do to get a plant to grow.

  46. tmank87

    tmank87 Well-Known Member

yes. But I’m sort of a buy once cry once kind of guy. In the end it’s a lot cheaper than paying the pest control guy and the yard guy and my home has less bugs and better turf. I wouldn’t invest in the equipment unless you are committed to doing those kinds of things yourself. If you’re in, pony up, it’s more than worth it.
